Interview: Author Ilona Andrews + Giveaway

Filed in Giveaways , Ilona Andrews , Interview , The Smutty Lover Posted on June 1, 2010 @ 6:01 am 29 comments

Ilona and Gordon Andrews are a husband and wife writing team, and have written six books – plus several short stories and novellas. The release of their latest book, Magic Bleeds, from the Kate Daniels series recently reached number 19 on the New York Times bestseller list!

Kate Daniels series:

The Smutty Lover: Magic Bleeds is the 4th book in the series. What can we expect from Magic Bleeds, and will there be a crossroads for Kate?

Gordon: I think the crossroads came in the last book. When Kate jumped on the sword, she made a definite choice. This book is about her journey on that road.

Ilona: I agree. It’s more about having to deal with consequences of choices already made. The life that she has in MAGIC BLEEDS, the good and the bad of it, is the direct result of the choices she had made.

The Smutty Lover: Kate and Curran’s relationship has been full of tension, and simmers slowly, but surely. We hear that in Magic Bleeds, Kate and Curran’s relationship grows but will it develop into something more?

Ilona: You’ll just have to read the book. MAGIC BLEEDS is definitely the book where they decide what to do about that slow simmer.

Gordon: All the experiences that Kate has had in the first three books combined to make her the person she is in the fourth book. She can now meet him as an equal. She’s no longer a low-life merc and he’s been brought down a notch from his throne.

The Smutty Lover: Are there any reasons why Curran does not like peas, and if so is there a story behind this?

Gordon: They are nasty. It’s the texture. They’re squishy.

The Smutty Lover: Do you plan to write any spin offs with other characters?

Ilona: We have written MAGIC MOURNS with Andrea and Raphael. We could do several spin-offs, honestly, because we love working with these characters, but that’s more up to our publisher.

Edge Series:

The Smutty Lover: Can you explain what Bayou Moon (the second book in the Edge series) will be about?

Gordon: It’s about William and his chance to be the hero and get the girl.

Ilona: The Edge books are really hard to describe. It’s about William in a giant swamp with magically mutated spies, a doom machine, and a girl and her family of cutthroats and thieves. Sort of.

The Smutty Lover: On the Edge had a fairytale feel. Does Bayou Moon follow on this or will it be a departure to a new tone?

Gordon: I don’t think William or Cerise would describe themselves as fairy tale characters. They take what life gives them and they make the best of it.

Ilona: It’s more of a Red Riding Hood than a Cinderella, if the Red Riding Hood carried a sword and was found of cutting people in a half with it.

The Smutty Lover: Any surprises or hints about Bayou Moon?

Gordon: I like it more than the Edge.

Ilona: The boys are in the book toward the end.

The Smutty Lover: Will there be more books in this series?

Ilona: Yes, we’re contracted for the three and four.

Alpha Menz (Ilona and Gordon has signed up to do another series which will be out later next year – nicknamed it their sick shit :D)

The Smutty Lover: We hear you also have a new series which you nicknamed Alpha Menz and that its quite dark. What will Alpha Menz be about? Anything you can spoil us with?

Gordon: It’s probably the darkest subject matter we’ve tackled. I hate to use a catch phrase but it’s really not for the faint of heart.

Ilona: We really thought about what would happen if a woman was kidnapped by supernaturally powerful people with very little breaks. How would she be treated? How could she learn to survive? Will she retain her humanity?

The Smutty Lover: Is it a huge departure from the Edge/Magic Series?

Ilona: Yes and know. If you read BAYOU MOON, you will find some references to Alphas series in it. To be honest, we’re not quite sure where we will taking this series yet.

Discovering the Kate Daniels series was one of the revelations of 2010 for me. I have just started blogging when I saw all the praise about this series and became curious. Ordering Magic Bites was a decision I am thankful of, the only thing I regret is not having ordered the 2nd and 3rd book at the same time and so had to wait for delivery later!

I'm so glad that the 4th book has been released, can't wait to read it! 🙂

Thank you for this giveaway! Please enter me.

Finished Magic Bleeds on my ereader last week and it did not disappoint. I would love to have a hard copy, too. I really like this series and was wondering how many more books there will be.

I enjoyed the Edge, can't wait for the next book and am looking forward to the darker Alpha Menz series.

  • Ruth (Book Focus) June 6, 2010 at 5:21 am

The series sounds really good – love the peas comment 😀

And the Red Riding Hood comment? Nice! Sounds really cool – kinda reminds me of Roald Dahl's version of Riding Hood, she was kick-ass (gun in her "knickers", wolfskin cape, pigskin case and all).

The new series sounds really interesting – potentially very "horror" type stuff, but you could make such a good series out of that.

Would love to enter to win this – email: kiwibooklover at gmail dot com

Thanks so much for the giveaway! 🙂
