WTH – the Wyatt Truman Hearing by Kelly Meding + Giveaway

Filed in Blogoversary , Giveaways , Kelly Meding , The HEA Lover Posted on January 21, 2011 @ 7:00 am 64 comments

Today was supposed to be an Author takeover, but Kelly Meding decided she’d rather come with us on vacations than make a post.*g* We did find someone to fill in, please welcome the star of Kelly Meding’s Dreg City series …Evy Stone! She will interview WYATT- the one and only. Please give them a warm welcome and don’t forget to answer of the questions at the end for your chance to win.
Congrats to the Book Lovers on the first anniversary of their amazing blog! Great job! And thank you for inviting me to hijack said awesome blog today. I don’t get to speak out much, beyond the confines of the Dreg City books, so it’s nice to be able to spread my wings a bit. Metaphorically, of course—Phin’s the one with wings.
Anyway, I’m kind of a private person and I’ve suffered through a few interviews in the past—most notably on the hilarious (and sadly canceled) radio show Cat & Muse, hosted by a former succubus named Jezebel. Some of those questions were, ah, of a personal nature, but damn it, I answered them.
So when I was presented with the idea of posting here today, it seemed like a good opportunity to turn the tables and embarrass the hell out of someone else. What follows is my attempt at conducting a Jezebel-inspired interview with Wyatt Truman, who you might recognize from his frequent efforts to save my life from the various forces trying to end it.
Imagine if you will, a comfortable studio environment with plush chairs, hot coffee, and good lighting (please, imagine it, because we were sitting in the living room of my old Triad apartment, and that sofa isn’t very comfortable). What follows is the slightly-edited transcript of my interview attempt, complete with spoilers for both THREE DAYS TO DEAD and AS LIE THE DEAD. So if you haven’t read them (why not, I ask you?), you might want to skip this.

****

WYATT: Wait, so why are we doing this again?

EVY: Because I’ve done interviews before, we needed a funny post, and I think shoving you into the spotlight for a change could be pretty damn amusing. Any other questions?

W: (*shakes head*) Do your worst.

E: You might regret saying that.

W: Evy, in less than a week I saw my entire Triad murdered, traded my free will to bring you back, fought goblins, got kidnapped by Halfies, turned against some of my best friends, got swallowed by a troll, and died. Somehow you don’t scare me.
E: Well, you pretty much summarized THREE DAYS TO DEAD, so why don’t we skip that one. Let’s talk about AS LIE THE DEAD, and all of the shenanigans you got up to in that book.

W: I spent a third of it in a hospital bed.

E: Good point. (*considers*) Maybe I should be interviewing Phineas, instead. We made a pretty good team while you were laid up.

W: (*glares*) Uh huh. No way, you’re doing it with me.

E: (*snickers*)

W: (*rolls eyes*) Don’t you have note cards or something?

E: Oh yeah! (*shuffles cards*) Okay, so, what’s the worst thing about your situation in AS LIE THE DEAD?
W: Besides spending a third of it in bed, unable to help you or protect you from Phineas—who I did not trust at that point, by the way, sorry. Hearing Gina Kismet tell me she’d killed you definitely goes on the list of worst experiences ever.

E: At least she was misinformed on that front.

W: Yeah, well, you did nearly die. Again.

E: One day, that’s going to end up on my tombstone. She died—for real, this time.

W: So not funny.

E: Sorry, you’re right. Okay, note cards. (*reshuffles cards*) What was the best thing about your situation?

W: Every moment spent with you.

E: (*melts*)

W: And neither of us actually died, in either a temporary or permanent way. That’s progress, right?

E: (*still melted*)

W: Evy?

E: I’m here, I’m fine. All right, moving on. Um, what’s your clothing of choice?

W: Jeans, and a breathable, cotton shirt, all preferably dark colors. Sneakers or boots, as long as they’re strong.

E: Good one. Okay, you and your—wait, not reading that.

W: What? Why? (*snatches note card away*) You and your love interest, who’s on top? (*stares*) Seriously?

E: Hey, I cribbed these off of a former succubus. She has sex on the brain all the time.

W: How did you answer it?

E: Not going there, Truman. This is your interview.

W: Then I’m abstaining. Besides—[Spoilers Deleted].

E: Good point, but the third book doesn’t come out until July 26.

W: (*shrugs*)

E: Okay, fine. Second to last question. If you had your way, what would you change about AS LIE THE DEAD?
W: I’d have found a way to stop Kismet from blowing you up in that factory. I hated how much you suffered, healing from that. And the whole flying out the window thing, later. It breaks my heart to see you hurt, Evy.

E: (*melts into even bigger puddle*)

W: Evy? Damn.

E: (*collects herself*) You’ve got to stop doing that to me.

W: Sorry.

E: Last question then. If you could make author Kelly Meding do anything, what would it be?

W: (*considers it*) Do you want the evil answer, or the sappy answer?

E: Does the evil answer have to do with nearly drowning in troll spit?

W: You know me well.

E: (*laughs*) Okay, then the sappy answer, please.

W: I’d make her write a Happily Ever After for us.

*****

So that was right around the time that, in lieu of melting into another puddle of emotional goo, I tackle-hugged him to the floor. It kind of ended the interview. The whole happily ever after is definitely an ongoing process, but we’re working on it—one day at a time, which is all any of us really have.

Questions:

For those who’ve read the books: If you could interview Wyatt what would you ask him?
For the others: can you stay away from spoilers? or do you read them?

I try to stay away from spoilers, but they usually end up finding me. My dad loves to show off his "knowledge," especially when watching older movies and The Twilight Zone. Psycho just isn't the same when you know the twist, which I was told within minutes of the opening credits. If I were to spoil things for myself I would like it to be of my own volition. The only time I actually look for a spoiler is if I have a strong suspicion I may not like what I find.

Oh spoilers, well I try, sometimes I give in but mostly I try. But I hate reading spoilers I do not wanna read. I am thinking of Mockingjay and how someone spoiled it for me 🙁

um yeah, spoilers and Ina – I shouldn't read them, but you know how it works *g*
for example, an excerpt was posted to Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning and the moment I saw it I couldn't resist reading it although I knew I wouldn't read a single page for the next two weeks, because I've a lot of work to do – I got the book today and now you can imagine my frustration -.- the excerpt ended with a huge cliffhanger and because of my curiosity I'm now counting the days…
    greetings, Ina

  • Deea January 21, 2011 at 8:16 am

These books are high up on my TBR list, but I haven't started them yet. 🙁 I hope I'll get to it soon. And to answer your question… Yes, usually I stay away from spoilers. Or at least I try to stay away.:) I tend to lose my interest in a book if I already know what's going to happen.

I do look at some spoilers. They really don't bother me, I like knowing what is going to happen sometimes. It was really hard when Lost was on, not to look at all the spoilers out there.

Yep, I do read the spoilers. I recon I could stay away frm them if I really wanted to, but I love spoilers. They make the waiting easier, but they don't ruin the whole reading, because there are always some other things that make me suprised és excited to read more =)
    Thanks for the giveaway =)

ohh that was a great interview and now I cannot wait to read them . I have not read these books so I will answer question 2: I try to stay from Spoilers unless the temptations are too bad. Mockingjay I read because I was on a two month waitlist at the library and I just HAD to know.
Mainly though I hold off the temptation and drool over the cover.

    Hrmmmm. Hard question.
Spoilers aren't something I overly enjoy, unless it gives away only little, and not the big picture.
I love blurbs and experts, but I would rather figure out the storyline and characters myself.

    I follow!

Why do spoilers get such a bad rep? They INCREASE my interest in a story…because they could be the ultimate bluff. Or, you know, real. Gotta find out.

Three Days to Dead is in my TBR pile. I wouldn't say it's near the top, because that implies my pile has some semblance of order, rather than just personifying the chaos of my mind. But it will get read. Eventually.

  • LSUReader January 21, 2011 at 5:28 pm

Sadly, I have not yet read these books. I do stay away from spoilers, so I missed most of your column. But thanks for celebrating with us!

  • Jessica January 21, 2011 at 9:05 pm

I avoid spoilers at any cost! Can't stand them. In any form from any book or movie. I still remember in high school when my friend ruined the ending to Van Helsing for me before I even saw the movie!! Was soooo mad at him. Funny how I can still remember that and it was like 5 years ago…

  • Bethany C. January 21, 2011 at 9:16 pm

I avoid spoilers like the plague- I even go so far as to not read a book that's new to me until I've mostly forgotten the synopsis. Then for subsequent books in a series I know I already like, I won't read the synopsis at all. I was the freak kid that knew where my mom hid my Christmas presents but didn't peek.

    iqb99@yahoo.com

  • Diane January 21, 2011 at 10:51 pm

I read spoilers they don't "spoil" a book for me; I'm also one of those people who read the end of a book before the beginning. I won't read a book with a sad or disappointing ending;I have always done this since I was very young. Because we couldn't afford to buy books in my home, we went to the library whenever we could and to have a book I didn't enjoy was awful.

  • winnie January 22, 2011 at 3:09 am

For me, it kind of depends on the spoiler. If it's a small spoiler that doesn't give too much away, I will definitely read. But if it gives too much away, I will try to avoid because I like to have the reading experience of discovering plot twists as I read the book myself.

I'd love to win As Lie the Dead. I have Three Days to Dead on Mt. TBR and I swear it's slowly moving its way up to the top.

Anyway, I'm a spoiler gal, but usually only once I start reading the book. If I haven't started it yet, I try hard not to get spoiled (currently avoiding all Shadowfever posts like the plague), but once I've started a book, I usually just can't resist reading the ending. I'm not sure why, but I've always been this way.

I want spoilers. Upon occasion (like with "Mockingjay"), I'd read the last chapter before the rest of the book. Of course, with a romance novel, I know that there will be a HEA or at least a satisfying ending. With movies, I refuse to see any unless I know the ending. I blame the movie "Big Night" for this rule. Some idiotic blurb touted it as a "romantic comedy" so I saw it. WTH kind of rom com would have the male lead end up with no girl, no money, no restaurant, dashed American Dream, and having to go back to Italy? I've been frothy at the mouth over this movie for years (and apparently still am). Gah. Anyway, yes to all spoilers!

oh – i totally stay away from spoilers – i used to read a lot when it came to certain tv series, but i stopped that as well. for books? never. i completely hate that. if people tell me how a book or movie ends, I'll probably never read/watch it. although it's sometimes hard not to stumble upon it. and sometimes people get carried away in their comments/reviews, which is ok of course, but when they don't put up a spoiler sign or just post sth on twitter, my evil forces will unleash towards you. 😉
