Confessions of a Simpsons Junkie by Julia Rachel Barrett + Giveaway

Filed in Blogoversary , Giveaways , Guest Post , Julia Rachel Barrett , The Geeky Lover Posted on January 23, 2011 @ 12:00 pm 39 comments
Please give a warm welcome to Julia Rachel Barrett. She’s one of the nicest and chattiest authors I know and I’m easily lost in discussion about god and the world with her. So yes, I was thrilled when she agreed to come over for our Blogoversary. Today she will tell us about her little Simpson obsession. Be sure to answer the question at the end of the post to win my favorite book of hers. My dear blogger friend, Susi Sunshine, was kind enough to ask me to write a guest blog for the Book Lovers Inc. blogoversary. Before I launch into my absurd post, let me say congratulations! Book Lovers Inc. is a great blog. I come here often to read the fun reviews, for great book recommendations, and to find out what’s new in the romance/publishing world. Thanks, ladies. I know 2011 will be even better!

All right. Here we go! My guest post is actually a confession. I’m a Simpsons junkie. I’d better repeat that…a Simpsons junkie. Can’t get enough. I own the DVDs of the best (early) seasons plus the Halloween specials. Are you aware there’s a book titled, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten? Well, the way I see it, whatever happens in life has already been addressed by The Simpsons. When life hands me lemons, I don’t make lemonade, I turn to The Simpsons for guiding wisdom.
I’m serious. The writers have tackled everything from cardiac bypass surgery, family estrangement and Judaism (Krusty the Clown), to immigration issues (Apu), to pollution, those who exploit the environment and greed (Mr. Burns), unrequited self-sacrificing love (Waylon Smithers), religion, and occasionally religious hypocrisy (the Flanderseses and Reverend Lovejoy), schoolyard bullies, alcoholism, gambling addiction, the notion of the soul and the existence of evil, marital infidelity and divorce, true love, crushes – young and old, aging, death, music, animal cruelty, even Tron.
I think The Simpsons have pretty much covered everything.
Some of my favorite lines: From the Treehouse of Horror V

The Shinning:

“No TV and no beer make Homer go something something.” “Crazy?” “Don’t mind if I do!”

“Television! Teacher, mother, secret lover…”

The Time-Travelling Toaster:

“Okay, don’t panic. Remember the advice Dad gave you on your wedding day.” “If you ever go back in time, don’t step on anything.”

“I’m the first non-Brazilian person to travel backwards through time!”

“I’ve gone back in time to when dinosaurs weren’t just confined to zoos!”

My very favorite episode? Cape Feare, with Sideshow Bob. This episode, which includes Bob’s brilliant rendition of The Pirates of Penzance, and Homer’s inability to remember his new name provided by the Witness Protection Program, comes close to perfection. It’s my idea of truly perfect comedic storytelling.
Now you know me. Be prepared…I may use a Simpsons reference in one of my romances – such as “Throw, damn you!” Or, “I’m going out to my car with the woman I love and I won’t be back for five whole minutes!”

What is your all time favorite tv show- the one you just can’t stop quoting from? Leave us your favorite quote!

Do you love the Simpsons as much as Julia does?

Oh too many quotes to choose from!

My favorite quote from the 80's TV show Designing Women was "If sex were fast food there would be an arch over your bed!"

That quote always kills me. LOL

I really love Star Trek The Next Generation! I used to watch that every day for years! Still love it!
Simpsons is always very funny to watch, love the episodes that are set in some historical time, like the Tudors.

  • Stephanie January 23, 2011 at 3:12 pm

I do not like the Simpsons because I do not like that type of humor.

I think the new Being Human is going to be a MUST SEE for many people…I know I'm impressed 🙂

  • pattepoilue January 23, 2011 at 3:30 pm

@CLMcCune You know, it makes me kinda sad…the old version of Being Human was perfect. I don't see why it should be redone *sigh* You saw the original?

Ah The Simpsons…like Susi in Germany, in France there's a daily program with 3 episodes. =P So yeah i know them by heart too lol

  • pattepoilue January 23, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Ohh and I forgot my quote ' We were on a BREAK'….*g* Again I know ALL the Friends episodes by heart…in English and in French lol
btw they changed nearly all the jokes in French so it's like watching 2 different shows lol

  • elaing8 January 23, 2011 at 3:32 pm

  • Danielle Gorman January 23, 2011 at 4:39 pm

I do like the Simpson's but I have not watched it in years. I actually have quite a few favorite tv shows that I can watch over and over no matter what. Gilmore Girls, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Friends, Family Guy, How I Met Your Mother, and Saved By The Bell are hands down some of my absolute favorite shows.

Fav quote-Lois! Lois! Lois! Lois! Lois! Mom! Mom! Mom! Mommy! Mommy! Mommy! Momma! Momma! Momma! Ma! Ma! Ma! Ma! Mom! Mom! Mom! Mom! Mommy! Mommy! Momma! Momma! Momma!

I have lots of favourite TV shows – my favourite line from the Simpsons is when Homer is talking to Lisa and says:
"Oh honey, you know I'd do anything for you, especially if it's easy."

  • JenM January 23, 2011 at 9:28 pm

I don't watch much TV these days, but I adore So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD for those of us who are addicts). The level of talent, both the dancers and the choreographers is just amazing and as a long time dance fan I'm thrilled to see it finally get prime time exposure to people who would otherwise never have gone to a dance performance.

I don't know if it's my favorite show of all time, but I'm constantly quoting from The Big Bang Theory… I really think it is funny and I don't like to miss it.

I watch the Simpsons, but I don't love it. My children used to love it, and now my husband seems to think it is amusing.

  • Julia Rachel Barrett January 23, 2011 at 11:38 pm

The Big Bang Theory is my other favorite show! I have to find out where Sheldon buys his tee shirts!

  • winnie January 24, 2011 at 2:34 am

The Simpsons may not be my favourite show of all time, but I do enjoy watching the episodes. It's nice to get a good laugh once in a while if I can sit down and watch a new or re-run episode of it.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

My all time favorite show was Beauty and the Beast. I love the romance between Vincent and Catherine and I was sorry to see it go off the air. The quote I remember from the show is "Though Lovers Best Lost, Love Shall Not and Death shall have no dominion. Please enter me in contest. Tore923@aol.com

  • Sarah January 24, 2011 at 12:38 pm

    Homer is my hero!!!

    Favourite quote:
    Homer singing:
'Oh, Margey. You came and you found me a turkey!'

Another favourite is where he sings the Flintstone tune:
'From the town of Springfield, he's about to hit a chestnut tree'

  • LSUReader January 24, 2011 at 1:42 pm

What a unique perspective. I never appreciated the Simpsons like this before. Huh. My issue is that I don't watch much TV anymore. I’ve been trying to remember a TV program that I’ve quoted from, with no luck. Can I fudge a bit and give a movie quote, instead? Hubby and I have both used “What we have here is a failure to communicate” (from Cool Hand Luke) a time or two. (Anyone else out there got children? *g*)

  • Sheree January 25, 2011 at 3:29 am

I has been a while but I still quote lines from "Wooster and Jeeves" (with Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry). Wodehouse is just so quotable!

No, I don't like the Simpsons THAT much. I think Friends is my all-time favorite, but anything that makes me laugh is good.

  • natalie23 January 30, 2011 at 5:36 pm

I have loads of favourite shows, Buffy, Angel, Supernatural,Sanctuary,SG1,Friends to name a few.
My 6 year old niece and I often act out Homer strangling Bart while yelling WHY YOU LITTLE. We take it in turns to be Bart, she thinks it's hilarious.
She also likes picking up a bra, putting it over her eyes and running about yelling WHO AM I? (The answer is Walle)

I love Glee, but I have no favorite quotes.
As for the Simpsons, we got my hubby a speaking Simpsons birthday card several years ago. We are still quoting the card, "its got purple in it, purples a fruit". Probably funny with the whole joke but we only use the last line.

Loved Max Headroom and how dead on it was with the 24/7 tv culture that has developed but I did not know it well enough to quote. It has come out on DVD so maybe need to do a marathon soon. Watch very little tv these days and keep meaning to watch the Vampire Diaries but have not.
