Book Blurb:

A dangerous technology could conquer the universe. Love could set it free.

Charlotte, Duchess of Wyre, once held the Queen’s highest confidence—and the technological secret that keeps the royal heart beating. Fearful of what atrocities that Britannia might commit with her research, Charlotte turned to the galaxy’s most infamous assassin, Lord Sigmund Regret, to stage her own death.

Even without the simplest of luxuries, seven years hiding in the Americus colony is preferable to one day in the Tower of Londinium. Until a bounty hunter’s bullet forces her to revive her research. Now the same nanobots that keep the Queen alive also run rampant in Lord Regret’s body. Making his yearly Solstice visits increasingly…intimate…and complicating her courtship with the safe and honorable Sheriff Gilead Masters.

When the Americus colony declares independence, and her humble sheriff makes a shocking confession, Charlotte has had enough. Weary of running, tired of living without tea and silks, she fires a warning shot across Britannia’s bow: cease hunting Lady Wyre, or lose the technological power the crown holds so dear.

Her next task isn’t so simple. Somehow she must keep the two men she loves alive—and prevent them from killing each other.

Warning: Ladies in positions of power, stylish spaceships, BDSM. A ménage a trois featuring a duchess on the run, a gentlemanly assassin, and a rough-and-tumble sheriff willing to gun down anyone who gets between him and his lady.

My Thoughts:

Lady Doctor Wyre isn’t like anything I’ve read before. I wouldn’t say it’s Steampunk but it’s very close. It feels like a historical romance with futuristic technology. And instead of different countries, we have different planets. I first read some parts of the prequel Joely Sue Burkhart posted on her website, and I’m glad I did. The prequel really helps get a feel of the world. It also give some hints about the heroine’s past and how she came to be in the situation we find her at the beginning of the book.
I love Historicals, and I could find all the things that appealed to me about this genre in this book. And so much more! In this world, women are ruling. Charlotte has a complex past, she’s a Duchess on the run, or better said she is playing dead. She was the Queen’s Doctor (a very intelligent inventor/scientist) and she knows too many things that could compromise the queen. If she found her it would be the end for Charlotte. She’s been hiding for years on Americus, (yes the planets have names of countries we know, it does help to imagine the history and politics between those planets). She gave up her experiments not to be discovered, she also gave up all the luxuries she was accustomed to.
What I usually hate about love triangles, is that one of the 3 always ends up hurt. Well you can imagine that this book was perfect for me. The heroine for once doesn’t have to choose between the 2 men in her life.*joy* One helped Charlotte escape Brittania and fake her death years ago. Lord Sigmund Regret is a dangerous bounty hunter, I love how intense he is. I loved his needs and kinks. He is a wild element.

The other one, Gilead Masters is a sexy sheriff who’s been Charlotte’s only good friend on Americus. Only he wants more than friendship, he’s been courting Charlotte for years. I can’t say much without revealing some of the plot but I really adore those 3. They fit together and I really hope there’s more to come. It’s a fascinating world and it felt like we just brushed the surface and it promises so much more. *nom*
I don’t do justice to Joely’s writting, it’s hard to describe the world she created. This book is a mix of Science-Fiction and Historical Romance. I loved that it feels like a Regency Romance, with the pretty dresses, the corsets, the silk, the rules of British society but with nanotechnology and spaceships. It felt right. It never felt ‘weird’, which is often my main problem with ‘Sci-Fi’. Joely found a way to make it work. Well it also doesn’t hurt that the smex is pretty hot. *fan self* Sig and Gilead are very different on so many levels, but in the end they are both perfect for Charlotte. She’s a strong woman and she’s not afraid of taking matters in her own hands *waggles eyebrows*.
As with most novellas, I only wish it was longer *wink*. Joely created a captivating world, with very sensual and mysterious characters (I still feel like I don’t know half about them). The writing is deeply erotic and the words flow easily. The world is both complex and simplistic. My only complaint is that the ending felt a bit rushed, but it’s mostly because I wanted MORE!! I can’t wait for more. If you love Historical Romance, Sci-fi or Steampunk, you should give this book a try you won’t be disappointed.

I give Lady Doctor Wyre 4  & 1/2 Bookies.

So… she doesn't have to choose? From Samhain's warning it seems she gets both.

Fantastic review here. I've been curious about this one since I read something about it at The Galaxy Express in Dec.

I must admit that I am one who doesn't like all the pretty things like the dresses and such but everything sounds like it's a crazy adventure not to be missed.

@ ♫♥LovLivLife Reviews♥♫ yeah this is why I thought it would be ok to say that she didn't have to choose…because the Warning already said it. So no spoiler 😉
The dresses and all that are just a little part and it comes with a sexy edge so *g* ALL good.
It's sexy and original. I'm really hoping there will be more books in this world. I can't recommend it enough

@ pattepoilue- I;m even more excited now. And, yeah, totally okay to mention.

I just made a comment on my blog post how I love Samhain's 'warning' messages. I said it should read 'temptation' instead because those messages always seal the deal for me =D

This world does sound fantastic and sheesh- two men on your arm…. that's heaven!!! LOL. Don't tell my hubby.
