Well it seems the Apple Apps closing buy or direct links to purchase books from other than those they sanction or own has come to fruition, the deadline has come and gone, without any sign for vendors being allowed to use their buy links. Apps by Amazon and Barnes and Noble and others are still able to offer their books on devices on the Apple platform but you are unable to buy directly from those apps but still be able to buy via Safari and sideload the book. I honestly hate this because the whole point is the easy access to purchase a book on a portable device on the format of your choice, I think this is just Apple trying to strong arm the competition and to force people to shop at their ibookstore which is one of the worse sites for choice of books. I really do think this will drive away new customers and a probably a few of their current ones when they decide to upgrade to a new model. This also will definitely raise antitrust issues because of the lack of competition aspect.
In a NY Times article, another development about the popularity of ebooks have pushed publishers to release tradebacks/paperbacks much earlier than the usual year after a hardback release. I think this is pretty interesting and great news for those who like to wait for a more affordable book or ebook in that case!
And more changes due to the growing influence of bloggers and online reviews – The LA Times have announced they have cut all of their freelancing writers for reviews and articles. I think this is a shame but it is not the only paper which have done the same thing recently and I doubt it wont be the last.
If anyone is in the UK – you will know there is a huge phone hacking scandal which many tabloid papers, including the recent demise of the News of the World, one of the newspapers who are alleged to have hacked into murder victims phone messages to get info on a story. One of the major figures who has investigated this tirelessly in the past few years, The Guardian’s Nick Davis has sold a book to Faber and Faber – the book will lay out the case which seems to have twists and turns almost every day right now.
On top of that, Tom Watson, the MP who is also one of the central figures to investigate this scandal has also signed up for a book with Penguin Press.
I have to say I really can’t wait for the movie to this too – anyone fancy doing a fantasy casting list?

An interesting new book deal caught my eye while I was browsing Publishers Weekly. Arclight, which is a YA is a dystopian thriller which will feature a parasitic race which threatens humanity has been recently sold to Harper Collin’s Greenwillow books. This is part of a two book deal and the author, It also mars Josin L. McQuien first sale.

Entertainment Weekly has the first shots for Peeta and Gale from The Hunger Games movie. I am still feeling underwhelmed…

And now for the covers! First up – Pamela Clare’s Defiant which sounds like ZOMG on viagra!

Charged with a crime they didn’t commit, the MacKinnon brothers faced a death sentence until they agreed to serve the British Crown in the Colonies and take up arms against the French. Allied with the Indian tribes who lived beside them in the wilderness, the Scottish Highland warriors forged a new breed of soldier…

MacKinnon’s Rangers

Major Connor MacKinnon despises his commander, Lord William Wentworth, beyond all other men. Ordered to rescue Wentworth’s niece after the Shawnee take her captive, he expects Lady Sarah Woodville to be every bit as arrogant and contemptible as her uncle. Instead, he finds a brave and beautiful lass in desperate peril. But the only way to free Sarah is for Connor to defeat the Shawnee warrior who kidnapped her—and claim her himself.

Torn by tragedy from her sheltered life in London, Lady Sarah is unprepared for the harshness of the frontier—or for the attraction she feels toward Connor as he guides her first through the consummation of their forced union and then through the dangers of the wilderness. When they reach civilization, however, it is she who must protect him. For if her uncle knew all that Connor had done to save her, he would surely kill him.

But the flames of passion, once kindled, are difficult to deny. As desire transforms into love, Connor will have to defy an empire to keep Sarah at his side.

    I'm a Mac person….so when I look for a tablet, I WANT AN IPAD!

No kindle (with Amazon's draconian censorship methods) or Nook (ugh, B&N has terrible selections) for me.

Since I've been reading ebooks on my laptop for about 4 years now, I don't mind having to sideload any ebooks I'll end up wanting. That's how I've been getting them all along!

Ooh to "Oracle's Moon"! And "Slow Ride"! I still like the first cover of the series the best.

I'm not sure how much grousing there will be over the Apple Apps. After all, people buy Apple products for the cachet as well as for the quality of the products. Personally I have a Kindle and, aside from the ePub complaints, I'm okay with it. I also don't buy any books on it; I buy ebooks on the computer and have them sent to my Kindle. Will I buy any apple products? Maybe not because I can always find a cheaper alternative, not due to the App issue.
