Explore This! Halifax, Nova Scotia

Today, I’m whisking you all away to the east coast of Canada. This entire area has always seemed to me to be such a picturesque place (except when the snow matches height with the tops of houses), that I dream of a fantastic road trip, to see all the sites. More specifically, our stop on this Explore post is Halifax.

Halifax is the capital of the province of Nova Scotia. It was originally founded in 1749. A lot of early Canadian history can be discovered in this area, being a short stop from the ocean and a landing place for those coming from the old world. Though there was a former city named “Halifax”, the area is now an amalgamated muncipality. But the former name for its residents, under the previous incarnation, was “Haligonians”.

And, of course, I should mention the reason I have Halifax on my mind: I started reading Vicki Grant’s Betsy Wickwire’s Dirty Secret yesterday, and having almost finished the book already, it seemed a perfect fit. So, let’s see what Halifax has in store for my future road trip (and yours?):

Halifax sits directly on the Atlantic Ocean, offering this stunning coastline.

Around that much water, you know there are going to be plenty of bridges.

Some “old world” archetecture.

And where there’s ocean, there are always lighthouses to be found.

A beautiful, calm day on the water, with the contrast of
city and nature evident here.

This would give a whole new meaning to the daily commute.

Outdoor dining at its best.

Citadel Hill

There’s a lovely small town charm feel in this picture
but there’s no avoiding the Canadian winter :-p

A night time view of the city skyline…stunning!

So, who’s with me on the road trip to Eastern Canada? Would Halifax make your travel list? I think a trip to this area in late summer/ early fall would add to the romantic feel. It could easily be extended to a trip down through the eastern part of the U.S. and would feature some of my favourite things in life….like lobster 🙂

Please Jackie pack me in your suitcase! ;-p lol

Canada's always been a dream destination of mine, and Halifax and Nova Scotia always reminds me of Anne of Green Gables (I think it might be Phil who is from there).

And as I LOVE lighthouses I bet I would be in heaven when strolling the coast 🙂

Beautiful place, would love to tour the whole country! (But please let's go in the summer ;-p)

I'm from the west coast, but my sister moved to halifax 4 years ago, she's always bugging me to come visit so I'd have a place to stay but it just so expensive to fly all that way! I'm dying to go there though

@Stella – What about a driving tour of lighthouses?! *sigh* I haven't seen much of Canada myself, so I'll come with you on the cross country tour, if you ever get the chance…but it's a BIG country 😉

@LSU – Nova Scotia seems like it would be so different from my part of Canada. Hopefully you get to visit someday.

@Rebs – I haven't seen the west coast either :-p I'd watch out for fare sales, maybe something good will come along…
