On the Booklovers Shelves: Special Vacation Edition

For this edition of shelf porn I will be showing you exactly how I smuggle so many books on holidays. My family are not readers, and I am fully aware that they don’t have the slightest inclination about how desperately I need to read. So to keep everyone happy I resorted to the favoured saying of “what they don’t know won’t hurt them” and started hiding my books so no one knew exactly how many I took.
So now I’m going to show you some of the ways I hid my books and turned my luggage into my holiday shelves:
The first way is simple…a book bag –>

Stylish and easy to pack, you can fit quite a few books in here – I shove them down the side as well. This bag is a canvas bag I actually got for $5 from a chemist – cheap and durable 😉

The next is a little more devious….a laptop bag:

Now obviously I need to fit my laptop and other paraphernalia in here as well, but there is still room for books…

Another handy spot is obviously luggage! This is my underwear bag:

(I took the underwear and pyjamas out so don’t know what colour undies I’m wearing :p) But as you can see…it still has some room for books:

Make sure to not overlook the obvious everyday places that you store your books:

I always have at least one book in my handbag when I am at home…so why not on holidays as well:

And last but not least…the secret smugglers mother load:

The travelling suitcase…we go away for a long time so I have two of these all padded out with books…it’s a good idea to pack them between your clothes…they act as a protective layer so the books don’t get destroyed. I took my clothes out for these photos though hehe.

Obviously now the gig is up, my family mostly knows that I smuggle books, but they also know I can pack around them so I have enough clothes as well, so they tolerate it but don’t necessarily like it…my bags can be a bit of an OHS hazard because they are so heavy.

Now you may be wondering how I could possibly read all of these books when I am away (I take about 50) well, I always say that you can never have too many books and I like having a choice about what I read so although I may not read all of them (this year not even half) I have a good selection, I can read pretty much anything that takes my fancy and I don’t buy books on holidays – anymore.

So these are my holiday shelves, you like?
Do you take books with you on holidays?
Do you need to smuggle them in to make sure they go?

I take a couple of books, but not many, so I always 'need' to buy books at my holiday destination as otherwise I don't have anything to read.

depends on where im going.. if im going domestic (ie visiting family etc) then i usually only bring a couple or 10.. because there is uusally used bookstores around them.. if i am going international.. i try to bring one book per 2 days there.. and yes, the purse, backpack, camera bag, laptop and carry on are usually filled with em..

I travel a lot lighter now that I have my Nook! If I take any print books, it's usually just 2-3.

  • Stella (Ex Libris) October 20, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Oh my you really did take half your library with you lol 😀 But what ingenious ways t smuggle your books, I never thought of having a separate underwear luggage, maybe I should invest in one just to have an extra bag to pack with books (though thanks to my Kindle now I can pack lighter ;-p)

Thank you for sharing your secrets and showing your photos Amanda 🙂

I go nowhere without enough books to read. Whether to the dr or out of town on vacation. If it's a short trip and I'm almost finished, I make sure I have a new book to start. Obsession? NO! of course not 🙂

I don't have to sneak books into every nook and granny now as have my Kindle sigh. When last we holiday'd I stocked the kindle up so had approx 10 new books and oh about 400 other's that are on there I haven't read yet but have either read years and years ago or someone thought I would like but I just don't feel like reading yet.

Ha! That's exactly why I own a Kindle. My husband bought my very first ereader 7 years ago (pre-Kindle and pre-Sony) because he was tired of carrying luggage stuffed with 10 or 15 books on overseas trips. I currently have about 300 unread books on my K (this includes about 200 free books), and the best thing is that I never suffer book panics anymore, although I do sometimes worry that my beloved K will break in the middle of a vacation.

This post made me giggle! I love it! I think you should invest in an e-reader. It would make your life so much easier and you could take tons of books with you everywhere you go!

You are so sneaky…I like that about you!

When I went on a three-week vacation this summer, I tucked lots of paperbacks into my suitcase, then left them behind as I finished them. (And that gave me room for vacation purchases!)

    Thanks for a fun column.

I do the exact same thing! I stuff books everywhere they will possibly fit in my luggage. But I've never packed 50 books before – you definitely have me beat!

Ooo love this post! I always take a bag filled with books with me, much more than I can ever read in that time. But you have to have a choice in genres, and in each genre in author/books. Most people don't understand that, so I am happy to find kindred souls here! And yes, I have been thinking about an ereader, but I also love watching my stack of books and pick one out.

@Sullivan McPig: I am now banned from buying books on holidays lol…a couple of years ago I bought about 30 while I was away and was reading at least a book a day…my mum then had to find a way to pack them in so they could come home hehe

@alainala: I have never travelled international (never even been on a plane because we drive everywhere) so I really don't know how i'd go hehe…isn't there a weight limit at airports or something? I would not do well hehe

@Karen C: wow only 2-3? I love looking at my stacks of books hehe

@Stella: You're very welcome stella hehe

@Blackwater Mama: I always make sure to have a new book to start too! I get so bored when I know I don't have anything to read…

@emmad & JenM & xxsquigglesxx: I am trying to stay away from E-readers for as long as possible hehe, I can't stand them to be honest…much prefer the feel and smell of a paperback

@LSUReader: *gasp!* leaving books behind?! I couldn't stand that hehe I am so possesive of every single one of my books…i can't even throw the ones I hate out!

@Lesley D: Hehe 50 may be excessive…but I get a bit carried away sometimes…I see a space in a bag and am like: That could fit a book!

@Aurian: Exactly! Choice is very important..I never know what I am going to feel like reading! And I completely feel you about the stacks…I could stare at that book stack for hours 😀

Wow…. Usually, I'd buy a discounted book to take along specifically for a trip. That way, if I lose it (or drop it into the hotel pool), I won't be that upset. Besides, what with the airlines' charges for checked bags and such, one book is all I can bring.
