Royal Street (Sentinels of New Orleans #1) by Suzanne Johnson

As the junior wizard sentinel for New Orleans, Drusilla Jaco’s job involves a lot more potion-mixing and pixie-retrieval than sniffing out supernatural bad guys like rogue vampires and lethal were-creatures. DJ’s boss and mentor, Gerald St. Simon, is the wizard tasked with protecting the city from anyone or anything that might slip over from the preternatural beyond.

Then Hurricane Katrina hammers New Orleans’ fragile levees, unleashing more than just dangerous flood waters.

While winds howled and Lake Pontchartrain surged, the borders between the modern city and the Otherworld crumbled. Now, the undead and the restless are roaming the Big Easy, and a serial killer with ties to voodoo is murdering the soldiers sent to help the city recover.

To make it worse, Gerry has gone missing, the wizards’ Elders have assigned a grenade-toting assassin as DJ’s new partner, and undead pirate Jean Lafitte wants to make her walk his plank. The search for Gerry and for the serial killer turns personal when DJ learns the hard way that loyalty requires sacrifice, allies come from the unlikeliest places, and duty mixed with love creates one bitter gumbo.

Thankfully, another week of reprieve! Not a whole lot of releases this time around, but there are definitely several gems among the bunch. Personally, I’ve been waiting for months to pick up Royal Street, whose cover looks gorgeous (and was the initial reason why I put it on my TBR way back when. Check out book two’s cover; beauty!). Also got some maaaajor cover love for Glamour in Glass by Mary Robinette Kowal. Apparently the first book in the series is both awesome and great for Jane Austen fans (in essence, double awesome). Oh, and the cover for Killing Me Softly? Love–it’s a breath of fresh air from the usual YA cover themes. Lastly, I’ll definitely be picking up the novella Good at Being Bad. Sometimes it’s nice to have a little reading interlude, nothing too long…just enough to take up an afternoon.

Anything pique your interest from this week’s list? Do any of the covers have you interested in checking out the book itself?

I’m looking forward to Royal Street! I’ve also been seeing some great reviews of Glamour in Glass, but I haven’t read the first book yet.
