Explore This!: Staten Island, New York

Today we’re heading off mainland America, to the destination of Staten Island, thanks in part to Clarissa Yip’s True Connections. I’ve heard the name before but don’t really know much beyond the need to travel by ferry to get there. Funny, when I was looking for images, more often that not, it was the ferry that was highlighted.

Yip’s story takes place in Grant City, part of Staten Island, but I thought we’d take a look at the whole thing. For me, Staten Island means summer rides, boardwalks, and amusement parks. Let’s see how my knowledge compares:

The boardwalk...necessary for any summer locale.

Amusements and rides, including roller coasters *shudders*

The ferry and other boating traffic.

A quaint summer home...or perhaps a commuter's.

This veranda would be perfect for lounging on hot days with lemonade.

The botanical gardens.

Rocks and birds on the waterfront.

Anywhere that has boats will also have a boat graveyard too. It's kinda sad.

Turns out, you can also take a bridge to get to the island.

The view from the ferry...not too shabby, I'd say.

The ferry at night. So pretty.

While the pictures I chose kind of molded to my idea of the Island, it looks like there’s far more to Staten Island 🙂 What do you think? Would you visit? Personally, I’m suddenly craving a corn dog….

My brother lives there so I would go just to visit him. Otherwise, I don’t know. I guess as long as we stay upwind of the former landfill, it’d be okay.

It seems Staten Island is a favourite spot for quite a few novels. I remember having read at least 3-4 books where the h/h went to Staten Island for the day/weekend. Looks like a nice excursion 😀

Loveliy pics Jackie, thank you. I would love to visit New York for the very first time, like the old European Immigrants saw it. With the welcoming Statue of Liberty.
