What Kind of an Impression Did You Make?
by Terry Spear
If you met the man of your dreams, what kind of impression did you first make? What kind of an impression did he make on you?
Was it love at first sight, or did you think: what a loser! Or: no way would I get hooked up with him…he’s too cute, charming, too rich, too out of my league, too whatever?
When we’re writing fiction, we have to come up with ways that our heroine and hero are intrigued, but not making a commitment right away.
In SAVAGE HUNGER, he’s a jaguar when he hears her cries for help. So, it makes for a difficult relationship right away. Sure, she can love the look of the toothy jaguar, but fall in love? Not happening unless she’s really off her rocker. Now if she was a jaguar shifter also, maybe so. But not as a human who doesn’t know such a thing exists.
Okay, so he doesn’t see her in his jaguar form. He shifts before that, and then he’s naked.
How does that go over? Me Tarzan without the loincloth? Probably not well. Even if he IS there to rescue her.
He’s a little more modest than that. He grabs a dead guy’s pants, no shoes, no shirt in the jungle, and he saves her life. So good beginning. Still, who is he? Not one of the bad guys, but he’s not one of her Army team either. Mysterious, caring, intriguing.
There’s intrigue on his part also—who is this woman who, he at first thinks is a tourist turned hostage, now is an Army officer on a mission gone wrong? He can’t quit thinking about her, worrying that she made it out of the jungle alive.
She can’t quit having nightmares about the jungle and wants in the worst way to thank the man who saved her life.
Now the real issue is he can’t get involved with her, even if he’s really intrigued with her, because she’s human.
She can’t get involved with him because he’s kind and caring and loving when she needs his help, again, and yet, he’s holding back. She’s had enough issues growing up. She doesn’t need or want the hassle.
Then there’s Maya. Sweet twin sister, Maya. His twin sister. Connor knows the look of speculation in her eye means she likes Kathleen as much as he does. And she intends to do something about it. He intends to thwart her.
On a chat when my editor asked what readers liked about my shifter stories, one of my fans said, “They get naked.”
Which is true!
So no matter what your first impressions were of a man you might have fallen in love with, or just one that intrigued you, can you imagine if he turned out to be one hunk of a jaguar shifter? Think of it.
Sure he can be growly. All of us have our moments. But need a protector in the wilderness? He’s got your back. Need a huntsman who can bring home the bacon? He’s got it covered. Need a lover who’s just a little unconventional? He’s your man.
And when he gets naked? He’s one hunk of a man. It all has to do with keeping in shape. Not in the gym. But in the jungle. Tackling caiman, taking down the bad guys, fighting with an anaconda. He’s courageous, knows his way around a jungle, and he’s definitely got the hots for you.
So what’s not to love?
Are you ready to set your sights on HIM?
Thanks so much to Book Lovers Inc for having me here today, and one lucky person that answers my question will have a chance to win a copy of SAVAGE HUNGER. US/Canada Addresses Only.
