Please give a warm welcome to Inara Scott, author of several contemporary, fantasy, paranormal and young adult novels! Inara stops by today to chat about fake engagements (since her newest release The Boss’s Fake Fiancée features this trope) and why she loves them. Arranged marriages/fake engagements and marriage of conveniences are some of my favourite tropes as well, so join us and tell us about yours, you could win a copy of The Boss’s Fake Fiancée

My latest release, The Boss’s Fake Fiancée, is a “fake engagement” story (obviously!). It’s also an employee-boss romance (just as obviously!). These are tropes–well known romance novel set-ups that give the basic outline of the story and plot. Tropes let the reader know, in a very general way, what the book is about. Everyone out there probably has their favorite–for example, you might love “marriage of convenience” stories, and hate the “secret baby” books.

I happen to love fake engagements. Why? For one thing, I think the engagement process is a great relationship tester. Couples have to plan a huge event, deal with family dynamics, and make decisions about religion, style, and money. There’s stress, anxiety, and a ton of emotion. If you don’t know each other inside and out going into it, you sure will on the other end.

And of course, it’s not all bad. Planning a wedding is also spectacularly romantic. There’s the picking out of the ring, the proposal, and the man on one knee. Is there anything more likely to provoke tears in the eyes of a woman than hearing a man ask if she’ll spend the rest of her life with him? Then there’s the growing closeness, the process of compromise, the nights of anticipation, and of course, planning the honeymoon.

Now, if all this can bring together–or push apart–real couples, why couldn’t it do the same for fake ones? Could you remain unemotional if a man pushed a beautiful ring on your finger? (What if he was really hot? LOL!) What if that same man helped you navigate an emotional family moment? Or showed that he understood your style, your taste in cake, or desire to have a polka band at your reception? (Yes, my husband and I did have a polka band at our wedding!)

I figure, what better time to fall in love than when planning a fake wedding? It’s like compressing an entire relationship into a few short months. And from a writer’s perspective, what better situation than one ripe with conflict, emotion, and romance to propel two unlikely people into love?

So tell me–if you were stuck in one of my fake engagement stories, what would you enjoy most about planning a wedding with a hot, rich guy? Picking the ring? The location? Testing the cake or maybe the bed at the honeymoon resort? 😀

The Boss’s Fake Fiancee by Inara Scott

Is she his worst nightmare…

No relationships, that’s billionaire Garth Solen’s rule—especially not with a woman like his new employee Melissa Bencher, who thinks with her heart and not her head. But all bets are off when Melissa tries to make her jerk ex-boyfriend jealous by suggesting that she’s dating her gorgeous boss. How could she have imagined all the trouble one impulsive act could cause?

…or a dream come true?

To protect his ailing grandmother, Garth is forced to play the part of Melissa’s adoring fiancé. Now they’re trying on rings and posing for the paparazzi. The game is clear: for one month, they play the part of an engaged couple, and then they part ways. No emotions. No entanglements. But when it comes to matters of the heart, Melissa’s never been good at following the rules…
