Around The Bookish World: Week-In-Review

Welcome to this week’s news post! We have new developments from Agency pricing publishers and more news from authors as well as books to watch out for!

First up, in a surprising move, Penguin has announced that they will drop Agency pricing and will be settling with the Department of Justice this week. It is also expected that Random House will also follow suit although they are the only publisher who wasn’t involved with the lawsuit due to them not adopting Agency pricing when it was first introduced. Macmillan is the only lone publisher right now involved in defending their stance against the DOJ’s charges for collusion even though they have settled in the EU for similar charges. John Sargent, the CEO for Macmillan has written an open letter explaining their position and defence. But it will be interesting to see how this all fares in the next year especially since it will only be Macmillan facing litigation.

I really don’t know what to say about this but the idea of YA erotica unsettles me, but it seems to be with the successes of New Adult books which looks like to be a huge audience for next year- YA books will be following with the erotica craze.  Abbie Glines, Vincent Boys Uncut – will have more explicit content in contrast to the original self published book, which was just picked up by Simon and Schuster who will be releasing both versions. The new Uncut version will have additional scenes as well more explicit scenes.

And talking about Macmillan, they have also announced a new digital imprint which will be crowd-sourced. They are inviting writers to post their manuscripts on site called Swoon Reads  where readers will choose and vote on popular stories which will then be published. This is not a new thing and already a few books have been picked up via this way on similar sites.  But it is the first purpose built site where a publisher is willing to publish a dedicated imprint on crowd-sourced manuscripts. News in Brief:

There is a slew of book movie news this week-

I am really looking forward to this adaptation and glad that a script has been found and that things are going forward  for Richelle Mead’s  Vampire Academy.  Producers announced that Dan Waters (the man who wrote Heathers & Batman Returns) will be scripting the movie.

In one of the best books I read  Daughter of Smoke and Bones, has been picked up by the producers behind Snow White and the Huntsman for the silver screen option. I really hope they do adapt it because it is a lush and beautiful book.
And for an early Christmas present, there is another snippet from the upcoming Frost Burned  which features a special guest from the Alpha and Omega series!

And now for some books to watch out for next year!

Kelley Armstrong’s new Cainsville series, has the first book, Omens slated for this August.

Twenty-four-year-old Olivia Taylor Jones has the perfect life. The only daughter of a wealthy, prominent Chicago family, she has an Ivy League education, pursues volunteerism and philanthropy, and is engaged to a handsome young tech firm CEO with political ambitions.

But Olivia’s world is shattered when she learns that she’s adopted. Her real parents? Todd and Pamela Larsen, notorious serial killers serving a life sentence. When the news brings a maelstrom of unwanted publicity to her adopted family and fiancé, Olivia decides to find out the truth about the Larsens.

Olivia ends up in the small town of Cainsville, Illinois, an old and cloistered community that takes a particular interest in both Olivia and her efforts to uncover her birth parents’ past.

Aided by her mother’s former lawyer, Gabriel Walsh, Olivia focuses on the Larsens’ last crime, the one her birth mother swears will prove their innocence. But as she and Gabriel start investigating the case, Olivia finds herself drawing on abilities that have remained hidden since her childhood, gifts that make her both a valuable addition to Cainsville and deeply vulnerable to unknown enemies. Because there are darker secrets behind her new home, and powers lurking in the shadows that have their own plans for her.

And finally – I am a sucker for premise like this one is set in and the cover caught my eye – Starglass Phoebe North.

My darling daughter,

Know that I never would have left the Earth if it hadn’t already been doomed. . .

The generation ship Asherah coasts through space, bound for a planet its passengers have never even seen. On the eve of their arrival, sixteen-year-old botanist Terra discovers that her orderly society has fractured. Walking home one night through the long-abandoned engine rooms, she witnesses the murder of an innocent man. Now, called on by the Children of Abel, a group of rebels intent on destroying the High Council, Terra must prove her mettle–assassinate the ship’s rising captain. In order to carry out her task, Terra must betray her father, deceive her teacher, and challenge everything the Council has ever taught her was true.

The rebels think that Terra has nothing left to lose. But when she falls for Silvan Rafferty, the boy that she’s meant to kill, Terra learns that “doing your duty” isn’t always as easy as it seems.

So what do you think of the idea of erotic YA? Is it appealing or do you think its a bad idea? And what  other stories peaked your interest?

Hmm, YA erotica? Gross. And it doesn’t get less gross the more I hear about it. I mean, we all read smut when we were fifteen, but illicit passing around of Flowers in the Attic and Clan of the Bear is a lot different to publishers packaging and selling erotica to teenagers.

Kelley Armstrong’s book looks amazing. I have a morbid fascination for serial killers.

YA erotica is just f:ed up

That is so bad, erotic YA. I think if a teen is determined to read it, let her read the adult stuff. I don’t think teens should be introduced to kinky stuff when they are not ready for “normal” sex.

I think teens can handle a lot more than most adults give them credit for. Looking at myself I started reading books with explicit sex scenes when I was 13. And those books where given to me by my grandmother.
