Today we are really delighted to welcome author Catherine Hemmerling here at Book Lovers Inc, in celebration of her debut release with Entangled Publishing, Taming Her Forbidden Earl. With Taming Her Forbidden Earl, Entangled launches the brand new imprint, Scandalous and from what it seems, Catherine Hemmerling’s story, fits right there in the scandalous description! So, let’s welcome Catherine and don’t forget to check at the end of the post for the details of the giveaway for a chance to win a copy of this very promising story 🙂

– You have woven a quite intriguing story Ms. Hemmerling with the combination of historical romance and mystery, could you tell us a bit more about the Lady Lancaster’s Garden Society? Is it something you made up or did it have some historical ground, did maybe a real club inspire it? What kind of research did you do for the story?

Lady Lancaster’s Garden Society does not have any historical ground of which I am aware. Honestly, the idea came to me that I wanted strong, intelligent women as my heroines and I knew I wanted to write in a bit of mystery. What better way to have my characters show off their acumen than to have them solve the mysteries? But how to disguise a group of young ladies doing what society of the time would not understand nor condone? Well, they needed a place to go and conspire and they needed an older and wiser leader. That was how Lady Lancaster was born. She has her own experience in crime solving and the reputation to host a gather of fine ladies without society giving it a second thought. Really, inventing the club and the duchess was the perfect vehicle to show off my remarkable female characters.

Because my book is based on an actual historic event, I did a lot of research. I read everything I could about the historical event, the period in which it occurred, and the city in which it took place. I found maps of London from 1814, which allowed me to determine where the Custom House was and how one would get to it from Mayfair. I researched the aristocracy; where they primarily lived within or around greater London, the peerage (titles and how they are passed down), and I read a lot about the prevailing roles of men versus women and how they would have interacted with one another.

I still do research every day. I am constantly looking up idioms and phrases to decide when they were first used or said. I try very hard to be true to the period in which I write because I am taking such liberties with the actions and attitudes of my ladies. It is one thing to write a strong, outspoken woman in the opposition of her time and quite another to rewrite history altogether.

About the Author

Catherine Hemmerling has been a technical writer in the software industry for nearly twenty years and has published many user manuals and technical documentation in that time. She has always had a love of writing fiction but has never pursued publication in that genre until now.

Hopefully it is the beginning of a long new journey with Lady Lancaster and the Garden Society girls. Certainly historical romance (especially the scandalous kind) is more fun than writing technical documents!

This author happily resides in Tehachapi, California (near Bakersfield – home of her Alma-mater!) with her family.

Catherine writes for Entangled Publishing’s Scandalous historical line and is thrilled to be part of their family of writers!

About Taming Her Forbidden Earl

Everyone knows William Bredon, the earl of Pembroke, has a reputation as a captivating rogue, determined to never marry until his duty to produce an heir requires it. So when he invites Lady Hannah Rochester to dance, Hannah vows to keep her distance. But the undeniably gorgeous William, with his dark humor and seductive gaze, draws her in nonetheless.

Of course, Lady Hannah is not completely what she seems, either. A member of the dowager Lady Lancaster’s Garden Society, she secretly spends her days solving mysteries and uncovering intrigues, and when she brings William into the fold, a sinister plot develops that brings the two closer together. William’s protective nature ensures he remains by Hannah’s side, but he will not surrender his anti-marriage stance.

Can intrigue, passion, and maybe even a little bit of scandal reform the most notorious of rakes?

Hi, how do you decide what ‘rank’ your hero will be among the Aristocracy?

    • Catherine Hemmerling December 24, 2012 at 6:07 pm

The hero’s rank can play a very important role in how he identifies with himself. If I want a really strong hero, I will give them a higher rank. In some of the future books in this series, I want my some of my heroes to find themselves and therefore gave them a lower rank or no title at all. Really depends on the character I am trying to build.

I’m currently making my way through the J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) “in death” series. I’m really enjoying them! Thanks for asking … Happy New Year and good luck with the contest.

I do like an historical mystery since there was not a lot of information to help available to help solve the case.
