Around the Bookish World: Week-In-Review

Filed in News , The Smutty Lover Posted on December 28, 2012 @ 3:21 pm 1 comments

Welcome to this week’s news post! Because of the Christmas holidays, things have been pretty quiet. But I do have news of another YA movie adaption and another snippet from Sylvia Day’s long awaited third Crossfire book.

During a year where Goodreads has become the focus of a lot of kerfuffles over negative reviews, it was nice to see something positive from the social reading site. Goodreads  have posted an info graphic that depicts their growth in popularity and this year has certainly proved that with increased membership and reviews. It also summarises the most popular review group, most reviewed book and most followed reviewers.  And it looks like 2013 will be even more popular with readers using the site to share their love of books!

Pearsons the parent company that owns Penguin, has invested 89 million dollars into Nook Media which is owned by Barnes and Nobel. This is an interesting development because Barnes and Nobel has warned their profits over the holiday will be below expectations and is a sign that they are struggling longterm. Microsoft has also invested into Nook Media and owns a stake in the shares.

News in Brief:

Sylvia Day has posted a 5th snippet from the 3rd Crossfire book, although it is pre-edited and things may change. Entwined with You will be released in May.

Lois Lowry’s The Giver may actually get the silver screen treatment – she has stated in an interview that the movie is “finally on the road” – and actor Jeff Bridges who has been an ardent supporter as well as being attached to star in the movie with casting to find Jonas is already underway!

And now for more books to watch out for next year!

Stung by Bethany Wiggins has an interesting premise and I really like the look of this book!

There is no cure for being stung.

Fiona doesn’t remember going to sleep. But when she opens her eyes, she discovers her entire world has been altered—her house is abandoned and broken, and the entire neighborhood is barren and dead. Even stranger is the tattoo on her right hand—a black oval with five marks on either side—that she doesn’t remember getting but somehow knows she must cover at any cost. She’s right.

Those bearing the tattoo have turned into mindless, violent beasts that roam the streets and sewers, preying upon the unbranded while a select few live protected inside a fortress-like wall, their lives devoted to rebuilding society and killing all who bear the mark.

Now Fiona has awakened branded, alone—and on the wrong side of the wall.

The YA dystopian followup to The Forsaken by Lisa M. Stasse - The Uprising  has a similar premise to The Hunger Games- the second book is slated for release this summer.

In this dystopian sequel to The Forsaken, Alenna has survived the brutality of life on the wheel—and now she’s going back for more.

Alenna escaped. It was expected that she would die on the wheel, the island where would-be criminals are sent as directed by the UNA—the totalitarian supercountry that was once the United States, Mexico, and Canada. But Alenna and her boyfriend, Liam, made it to safety. Except safety, they will soon learn, is relative.

In order to bring down the UNA, they must first gain control of the wheel. If the mission succeeds, the wheel will become a base of revolution. But between betrayals, a new Monk leading a more organized army of Drones, and the discovery of a previously unknown contingent, Alenna, Liam, and their allies might be in over their heads. One thing Alenna knows for sure: There will be a reckoning. And not everyone she loves will make it out alive.

And finally this perked my inner gooooood book radar - ACID by Emma Pass has an intriguing premise which looks gritty and action packed!

13062484

ACID – the most brutal police force in history.
They rule with an iron fist.
They see everything. They know everything.
They locked me away for life.

My crime?
They say I murdered my parents.
I was fifteen years old.

My name is Jenna Strong.

So what books are you looking forward to the New Year? And did you read any good books over the holidays?

I hope everyone had a fantastic Christmast holiday break! And we all wish you for having a fantastic upcoming New Year!!!!
