Happy New Year! Welcome to the first 2013 edition of The Good, the Bad and the Are-You-Kidding-Me? Now that 2012 is behind us it’s time to take a look at what 2013 has in store for us. We’ve decided to begin with the PNR/Fantasy/UF genre and what a spread we have for you!

So grab a drink, step in the Delorean get ready for our journey through 2013!

Susi: I’m currently on the first Night Prince novel and I really can’t wait to get my fingers on this one. i do like how he looks even though it is a bit tacky. His stubble is awesome. *g* Love the man boobs.

Caro: I haven’t read this series yet but it’s on my TBR pile. I admit this is absolutely not how I pictured Vlad but oh well. This cover is more ‘ kitsch’ than the first one. I could have done without the bat lol. But I can’t lie, that man is hot.

Susi: Is it a bat? I was hoping for a dragon- a tiny dragon would be okay too. LOL (I swear I’m not drunk)

Caro: bwhahahaahahah a tiny dragon! Well now I’m hoping it is one! I’ll be super disappointed if it’s not! (btw is that Paul Marron?)

Susi: Well the Psy Changeling covers are usually meh and this one is no exception but I do not mind- still will devour this as soon as I can get my greedy fingers on it. Seriously sad though that such an outstanding series gets crappy covers like this.

Caro: I agree that the US covers for this series are always very bland and easily exchangeable. And yep this is the case with this cover too. Even the colors are boring. But it’s still far from the worst we ever got in the series. I guess we should be happy for that lol.

Susi: Hmmmm another steampunk novel. cover is okay- don’t like the chicks hair though. The guy reminds me of the Doctor but well I just had a Doctor Who marathon so I’m biased- the bowtie is missing though- those are cooler, you know.. *wink*

Caro: LOL I did think of the Doctor too when I first saw it (Probably because I also had a Doctor Who Marathon not long ago *wink*). I’m really looking forward to this book. I think this cover rocks. I’m still not sick of Steampunk covers. Hey her hair is fun!

US / UK

Susi: OMFG what is that purple thing. *covers her eyes* Seriously bad- I know why I buy the UK ones. They aren’t that special but well at least kinda pretty. I like the way the covergirl looks even though she looks nothing like I picture Charley.

Caro: I know! I thought it was a joke when I saw the US cover. It’s nothing like the previous covers in the series. WHY??? WHYYYY? I didn’t really like the UK covers until now…I guess it’s the less horrible of the two 😉 It’s not that it’s ugly, just that it’s really not the heroine. REALLY not her.

Susi: I like the right one more. I don’t like the scary black bird on red thing. Reminds me of a King novel. And I prefer the weirdness of the street. The colors are prettier too.

Caro: I can’t remember which is UK and which is US. I like both covers but I think the red one is more creepy. Well both are a bit gloomy, so we can expect a gloomy and dark story. But the red one makes me uncomfortable, which I guess is the goal. Also with a title like Omens, it has to have a raven on it.

Susi: Educated guess- the Sunday times bestseller is British and NY one US? LOL

Caro: *headdesk* Of course I could have read what was written on the covers. But it would have been too easy, would it? LMAO

Susi: Reading is highly overrated. *wink*

Susi: These covers are just so different. Seriously, they make me think kid book. Prolly why I never read one even though I know they aren’t for kids but well they look childish and a bit cheap. Really don’t get why they do that.

Caro: How did we end up with such a cover??? HOW? I loved the first cover. It was just made of awesomeness. It was different and highly original. But then with each passing new cover it got worse and worse. I hate the black bands. And yes now it looks like a kid book. Just no.

Susi: I like the dudes back but the tattoo is awfully fugly. I do like the rest of the cover. the setting and typography is great.. Love it.

Caro: If I’m not wrong this is Paul Marron, once again. I swear is guy is everywhere! I love his body, look how muscled he is! *swoon* Ahem, sorry. I like the feel of this cover. The font too. The tattoo isn’t pretty so I hope the guy really has a Reaper tattooed on his back. Otherwise it’s just a shame to ruin such a nice back with something so ugly!

Susi: This cover is so different. Where are the aliens, the gators or the poofs? And no Jamie? O_o Kitty looks so different- no Chucks??? I’m confused. It’s pretty and all but it does not fit in. I’m already unsure if I will like to see that one besides the rest in my shelf.

Caro: This is one of these series I own every book of and still haven’t read them. Well I’ve read book 1. I’ve kept buying them because I loved the covers so much. I do like this one too but I agree it’s way different. And yep I’m confused too. This one has a retro detective story feel. Give us the aliens back!

Susi: I do like this cover even though it is a bit over the top. The guy holding up his arm with this huge phallus like that while gazing adoringly into the woman’s eyes. Puhhhhleeeeez! But pretty colors and I love the Dogma font on Brook’s covers.

Caro: I’m torn. It’s both too much and pretty. At first look it nearly gives you a headache. Too much is happening on this cover. But I do like how it has an epic painting look. God this guy has a huge…sword! I can understand why she seems in such bliss. All in all, I think it’s fitting to have an epic cover to end such a huge series.

Susi: I like this cover. It’s sexy and sweet and cute. Well now that I stare at it the guy looks fake. Hmmm Well still nice. It Looks ll soft and mysterious. I do like her hair- I might be envy.

Caro: Honestly, look closer. The guy is definitely looking at her boobs. ‘BOOBS Gahhh BOOBS’ He even has this highly intelligent look on his face LOL. I ‘like’ the cover but something seems off. I’m guessing it’s supposed to be claws on his hand but it looks like silver nail polish. 😉 Still not too bad.

Susi: Let him look if her boobs are pretty. She looks hot- I would prolly check her boobs out. LMAO

Caro: Oh I’m sure you would, you perv!

Susi: This cover is pretty bad ass. I like. Does he have a gun arm like Rose McGowan’s leg gun in Planet Terror??? LMAO now I see his hand and it’s not a gun but a lamp thingy. Damn, I like my gun arm idea more. Well, shrug. Cover still rocks.

Caro: I agree this cover rocks. And it screams bad-ass. I like your gun arm idea. Lamp Arm is way less impressive but very useful lol. 2 thumbs up for this cover. Also the guys reminds me of Gerard Butler so I approve.

Susi: Okay I am happy that we didn’t get another Tricked cover- this one feels more back to the roots. But I miss our Druid gal with the name I can’t spell cuz I listened to all the books in audio and have no idea how you should possible put that in letters. His hair looks a bit off but I still want this book like right now.

Caro: Yes!!! Back to the roots. I still can’t look at Tricked without wincing. This is much better. But it looks like they used old pics from that first shoot and tried to make it look different. I know I know I’m being picky. I still like this one. That mysterious thing in the background is bound to be interesting.  (btw that girl is Granuaille! lol)

Susi:
Hit: Cold Copper but the gun arm version. LOL
Miss: Tempest Reborn

Caro:
Hit: Bronze Gods
Miss: Tempest Reborn.

What do you think of these 2013 PNR/UF/Fantasy covers?

Do you have a favorite? One you more than hate?

Are you getting tired of seeing Paul Marron on every cover out there? *hides from the rock throwing*
Am I the only one who didn’t see that New York Times and Sunday Post was written on top of the Omens covers? (please say no! lol)

I was disappointed in the Kock cover, you wont see the little details when you just look online, oh and Susi the poofs are there if you look 🙂

    • Caro The HEA Lover January 7, 2013 at 3:30 pm

LMAO now I see them too! Wow ….it seems obvious and still I didn’t see them either lol

  • Susan January 7, 2013 at 10:09 pm

    1. For the most part, these covers are meh.

    2. The Frost is pretty good, and the Hearne OK. The rest, not so much. The guy on the Monk cover does not look badass at all. Looks like a slightly pudgy auto mechanic–he just need a coverall w/ his name sewn on it. The Peeler cover pisses me off. So bad. The first couple of ones had such a strange appeal and then downhill. (But kinda like the books have been for me. I’ve barely been able to get thru the last 2 after an amazing start to the series.)

    3. I’d say I was tired of Marron, but I never really got the appeal to start with. Yeah, he’s got a nice bod, but he’s as bland as a bowl of oatmeal.

    4. Sorry, but it’s just you. 😉

Bonus: The Iron Druid Chick’s name bothers me. I’ve read the pronunciation guide, but it’s burned into my brain as “Granule.” I can gloss over the other weird names, but she’s one of the leads. Not a good name for the heroine/sidekick/love interest.

(I seem to be emulating Grumpy Cat today, don’t I? Hehe.)

    • Caro The HEA Lover January 8, 2013 at 6:12 am

*gasp* bwahahah ok your description of the Monk cover really made me laugh. It’s ok I’ll keep it for myyyyyself *g*
Yeah the Peeler one is just 🙁 inducing. I only read book 1 though (and i loved it).
I think the awesome thing about Paul Marron is that he can blend in. I mean most of the time I don’t even recognize him until someone points it out to me. I like THOSE covers of him best because it means his features aren’t too prominent . I want to be able to make up my own mind about her character’s face. Not sure if I’m clear at all. lol

Maybe I have an advantage when it comes to reading some names because Granuaille is pronounced exactly how you’d pronounce it in French. I always end up reading names the French way when I don’t know them.
Susi and I also both listened to the audiobooks of this series so it helped a LOT with the weird name. Actually, I READ the last book and I couldn’t recognize half the names. It’s just sooooooo different written and spoken. I really love those audiobooks!

It’s ok on Mondays anyone can be a Grumpy cat! (now I totally imagine you doing the Grumpy Cat face! lol)

      • Susan January 9, 2013 at 2:17 am

Yeah, I do know what you mean about Marron being an Everyman type (with a better than average bod). Personally, I don’t mind a more distinctive look. But, truthfully, since I read mostly ebooks the cover art is less important to me now. I used to really study the cover when I was reading a book but not so much now. I look at the cover when I buy the book and usually never again.

I must confess that I’ve never listened to an audiobook. I think I’ll need to dip my toe in the water.

        • Caro The HEA Lover January 9, 2013 at 6:36 am

Warning: Audiobooks can become very addictive! (Ahem yes Susi I’m talking about you!)

          • Draconismoi January 9, 2013 at 11:18 am

All you need to do is find one really terrible narrator – and then you’ll steer clear of audiobooks for decades. (I haven’t touched one in 15 years!)

  • LSUReader January 7, 2013 at 11:44 pm

I’m disappointed in the Kitty Katt cover. That series usually has such a unique and interesting look. And like y’all suggested, these are not the prettiest covers in the bookstore (we hope.) But Susi, did I detect a certain disdain for the color purple? How is that even possible? I’m sure Caro would never!

    • Caro The HEA Lover January 8, 2013 at 6:01 am

Oh I don’t think Susi dislike the color purple at all…just the fugly blob of a a cover we got. lol The previous covers were so cool! *sigh*
Yeah the new Kitty is just so different you have to wonder if the story will also be very different

      • draconismoi January 8, 2013 at 3:51 pm

I thought the previous covers all involved feet. Did the publisher lose a foot fetishist on staff?

        • Caro The HEA Lover January 8, 2013 at 3:54 pm

LMAO maybe! I loved that concept it was sticking close to the titles. *sigh* I don’t like change. I want the foot fetish cover artist back lol

  • draconismoi January 8, 2013 at 2:00 pm

YES. I am extremely bored with Mr. Man Boob. Get rid of him! Or give him a shirt. We hate it when the use the same female model on multiple series, I have no idea why it’s acceptable for the menfolk.

I’m feeling pretty meh about these covers. No standouts catching my eye. Though the Kelley Armstrong covers are most assuredly the best. Here’s hoping she can start a new series that captures my attention to the same extent as the early Otherworld books.

    • Caro The HEA Lover January 8, 2013 at 2:39 pm

Oh I hope so too! That series is what got me started on UF. I still have 2 or 3 books to read in that series though. But I’m not warming up much to Savannah.
I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us.

      • draconismoi January 8, 2013 at 3:51 pm

Yeah. Savannah did not draw me in as a main character. The last book I really enjoyed was No Humans Involved. Hope’s book was completely dragged down by Lucas’ narration, and I found I just didn’t care about the subsequent mysteries. Yawn.

Bitten is still up there in my all time favorite werewolf books.

        • Caro The HEA Lover January 8, 2013 at 4:00 pm

Me too Me too! I loved Jaime and Jeremy.
I think the one I really didn’t like was Living with the Dead. If that’s the one with the human main character then Bleeeergh. I wanted to skip whole chapters. I’ll still read Savannah’s books because I want to see what happens to the others.

Clay is one of my favorite (psychopath) characters ever. 😉 This is one of the series that cost me the most money. LOL I’ve ordered the novella and shipping in itself was more than the books.

        • Caro The HEA Lover January 8, 2013 at 4:02 pm

Btw I really hope they won’t ruin Bitten with the TV series!

  • Sheree January 9, 2013 at 8:05 pm

Ah, Paul… Actually, he’s on fewer covers of late. Nothing annoys me more than receiving a Barnes & Noble coupon and realizing that there isn’t a Paul Marron book out that I don’t already have (like this past holiday season: 30% off but no unbought Paul books!).

Yes, Paul is Vlad. Personally, I like that he’s more compact than, say, Jed Hill, although I like Jed, too.

  • Lynn K. January 10, 2013 at 2:02 am

Twice Tempted – Not too fond of this one tbh. I kind of liked the first better (because it was blue :D)

Psy-Changelings – Yeah, blaaaaand. At least the archangels series gets nicer covers.

Fifth Grave – US: Oh you’ve got to be kidding me. That’s the final cover, really??! I thought that was a placeholder and they were going to edit it after letting the fans choose the color. UK: Please don’t let the ‘entice’ logo be on the printed version…
