Around The Bookish World: Week-In-Review

Welcome to this week’s news post! I think everyone must have heard about J.K Rowling’s secret identity being leaked online, Goodreads sued for copyright infringement and much more news in the world of books and publishing.

The huge news this week is all about J.K. Rowling’s secret identity as being debut Mystery writer, Richard Galbraith who wrote THE CUCKOO’S CALLING which was released earlier this year.  But the whole story behind how her real identity being leaked is just as interesting which ranged from theories of the publisher intentionally outing the author to increase sales to Rowling herself. But the real reason was uncovered yesterday when her law firm confirmed it was leaked by one of their lawyers who told his wife who then told her BFF. The BFF then posted a coy tweet which others and papers like The Times managed to prove it was Rowling who was behind the book.  It was unprofessional for a lawyer to break the privacy and confidential information on Rowling especially since she wanted to release the book without her real name being attached and I suspect that lawyer wont be working in that firm for very long.

Ironically, while THE CUCKOO CALLING did okay for a debut release, sales have now gone through the roof with the book going for reprinting along with riding high in the Kindle charts.

Goodreads is being sued by a photo agency after one of their images of a boy band member was posted on a group page. BWP Media who owns the image of a member from IM5 is asking for $150,000 for damages. I wonder if Amazon who now owns the book focused social network is a reason why they are claiming damages especially since so many images and gifs are widely used in reviews. But I think its silly because this is a way to promote the band and I doubt they will win the lawsuit since ‘troll suits’ are becoming more prevalent and Goodreads is shielded by their own terms of conditions and the fact it was a 3rd member party who posted the images. I do wonder if this will change their terms of conditions for images in the future but with the popularity of Gifs and images in reviews I think that will be an unpopular decision.

This upcoming project has given me the giddies! Author Gail Simone has joined forces with a slew load of popular female authors who include Meljean Brook, Tamora Pierce, Mercedes Lackley, Nancy Scott and much more to be involved in a RED SONJA comic series. This will coincide with the 40th Anniversary of the female warrior  who kicks ass with a sword. The comics will be published via Dynamite and I am so looking forward to seeing this project pan out especially since this will be written and drawn by women.

News in Brief:

First there was a series that was cancelled before its time, then a Kickstarter campaign helped to reignite the series into a movie. Now Veronica Mars will feature in a two book deal which will bridge the events from after the movie. The first book is slated in the same year the movie is due which is in 2014.

With the success of GAME OF THROWNS its no surprise there’s more epic fantasy being developed. This time it is Patrick Rothfuss, THE KINGKILLER CHRONICLES. Fox has picked up the epic fantasy trilogy although there is no real detail whether this will be a special mini series event ala Stephen King’s THE DOME or full series.

Just goes to show how fun Science Fiction can herald future inventions – a machine has been invented that collects sweat and turns it into drinking water just like in Frank Herbert’s Dune series.

Now for books to watch out for!

I adored REAPER’S PROPERTY and the blurb and cover for the follow up REPEAER’S LEGACY has just been released – it is slated to be released by Berkley early next year!

WELCOME TO THE CLUB

Eight years ago, Sophie gave her heart—and her virginity—to Zach Barrett on a night that couldn’t have been less romantic or more embarrassing. Zach’s step-brother, a steely-muscled, tattooed biker named Ruger, caught them in the act, getting a peep show of Sophie he’s never forgotten.

She may have lost her dignity that fateful night, but Sophie also gained something precious—her son Noah. Unfortunately, Zach’s a deadbeat dad, leaving Ruger to be Noah’s only male role model. When he discovers Sophie and his nephew living in near poverty, Ruger takes matters into his own hands—with the help of the Reapers Motorcycle Club—to give them a better life.

Living with outlaw bikers wasn’t Sophie’s plan for her son, but Ruger isn’t giving her a choice. He’ll be there for Noah, whether she wants him or not. But Sophie does want him, has always wanted him. Now she’ll learn that taking a biker to bed can get a girl dirty in every way…

I inhaled WRITTEN IN RED – and so definitely looking forward to MURDER OF CROWS!

After winning the trust of the terra indigene residing in the Lakeside Courtyard, Meg Corbyn has had trouble figuring out what it means to live among them. As a human, Meg should be barely tolerated prey, but her abilities as a cassandra sangue make her something more.

The appearance of two addictive drugs has sparked violence between the humans and the Others, resulting in the murders of both species in nearby cities. So when Meg has a dream about blood and black feathers in the snow, Simon Wolfgard—Lakeside’s shape-shifting leader—wonders whether their blood prophet dreamed of a past attack or of a future threat.

As the urge to speak prophecies strikes Meg more frequently, trouble finds its way inside the Courtyard. Now the Others and the handful of humans residing there must work together to stop the man bent on reclaiming their blood prophet—and stop the danger that threatens to destroy them all.

And finally I am leaving y’all with a lickable cover by Jackie Burton who never fails to disappoint.  MELTING THE ICE is also slated for early next year!

Carolina Preston has only one goal in mind—launching her new fashion line. She needs only one last thing to make it perfect—hockey phenom Drew Hogan. But Carolina and Drew have a history that goes back to their college days, and Carolina doesn’t want the embarrassment of her past to cloud the brightness of her future.

Drew is eager for the chance to show Carolina he isn’t the boy who hurt her back then, but a man now, with the skills necessary to melt the icy exterior of her cold heart.

So what do you think about J.K Rowling’s secret book? Do you think it would have been better for her to release it under her real name?

I do hate law suits, I mean they just go after everything.

  • Has July 19, 2013 at 3:14 pm

Hence why they call it troll suits – but I bet they only did it because they see Amazon as a big target. 😛

I think it brave of JK Rowling to write under a secret name, and find out if she has real talent in another genre, or that people just buy the book because her name is on it.
I have read Written in Red 5 times already, and am looking forward to reading more books in this series. If you have not yet read it, what are you waiting for?

Oh, you’re making me weak. I’m boycotting Written in Red until Penguin drops the ebook price, but it sounds sooo good.

NO opinion about Rowlling, it’s her decision; we have many authors who have pen names and I still enjoy or not after all!

    Game of Throwns? 🙂

I’m potentially excited to see Kingkiller made into a TV series, but I’m holding off on the squeeing until Pat confirms it himself 🙂
