Around The Bookish World: Week-In-Review

Welcome to this week’s news bookish news! This edition we have the long-awaited news on the new Kindle Paperwhite which is now available to preorder, and the leading couple for FIFTY SHADES has finally been announced although some fans aren’t too happy.

Amazon launched their new Paperwhite Kindle this week, which isn’t surprising since reports had the older version being out of stock or on sale with reduced pricing which always heralds that a newer version is about to be released. In this new version there is a whole slew of new features and updated specs, such as a clearer and sharper screen and new software updates. But there is also new exciting updates such as the Kindle Matchbook which allows customers to be offered either free or low discounted ebooks of books they’ve already bought in print. Amazon has already brought in a similar feature with MP3s and CDs called auto-ripping. The other feature is no surprise since Amazon has purchased Goodreads earlier this year but you can now link your account to your Kindle and share progress and reviews with your friends. The Paperwhite also boasts a new flipping feature which allows the reader to flip chapter by chapter to skim through the book or by pages, and the lighting is much improved from the previous version. Yes I have ereader lust and I hope Santa is kind this year for me.

The leading couple for FIFTY SHADES OF GREY has been cast! Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson will both star as the leads as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. Filming will commence sometime in November for an August 2014 release. Although the casting choices has led to a campaign by some fans to recast the leads for Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel although the irony is that those actors probably did not want or were offered the roles is a point they missed.

Well here is another piece of disappointing news in the world of comics. The editorial team behind DC’s BATWOMAN comic series have announced they will be leaving the project due to interference about the ongoing gay relationship which Batwoman has with her girlfriend.  J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman stated they had to leave the series because their plans to write a wedding sub-plot was scuppered by DC who didn’t want this in the series and wanted to downplay the character’s relationship with her girlfriend. Considering DC’s past actions on the issue with homosexuality and Orson Scott’s Card’s hiring is a lot to be desired especially since BATWOMAN is one of their most popular series due to the talents of the team who is behind it.

News in Brief:

While I was writing this post, the sad news that Science Fiction author, Ann Crispin who also advocated for the rights for authors and  was co-founder of the site Writer Beware which helps to give advice to authors  has died. She will be sadly missed.

Karen Marie Moning has posted a teaser from BURNED on her Facebook page. She also announced that the book will be pushed up again so that it wont be released until summer of 2014.

Warner Brothers are teaming up with HEMLOCK GROVE writers to produce a new adaption of ISLAND OF DOCTOR MOREAU.  Let’s hope it will be a better take than the last version which was pretty bad.

Now for books to watch out for!

Joanna Wylde’s 2nd MC  followup is slated for the new year – REAPER’S LEGACY which I am eagerly waiting for!

WELCOME TO THE CLUB

Eight years ago, Sophie gave her heart—and her virginity—to Zach Barrett on a night that couldn’t have been less romantic or more embarrassing. Zach’s step-brother, a steely-muscled, tattooed biker named Ruger, caught them in the act, getting a peep show of Sophie he’s never forgotten.

She may have lost her dignity that fateful night, but Sophie also gained something precious—her son Noah. Unfortunately, Zach’s a deadbeat dad, leaving Ruger to be Noah’s only male role model. When he discovers Sophie and his nephew living in near poverty, Ruger takes matters into his own hands—with the help of the Reapers Motorcycle Club—to give them a better life.

Living with outlaw bikers wasn’t Sophie’s plan for her son, but Ruger isn’t giving her a choice. He’ll be there for Noah, whether she wants him or not. But Sophie does want him, has always wanted him. Now she’ll learn that taking a biker to bed can get a girl dirty in every way…

I adore Jessica Clare’s Billionaire Boys Club series, which is cute and very sexy – the next book, THE WRONG BILLIONAIRE’S Bed is out next month.

The Billionaire Boys Club is a secret society of six men who have vowed success–at any cost. Not all of them are old money, but all of them are incredibly wealthy. They’re just not always as successful when it comes to love…

Audrey Petty’s always been the responsible one. The good twin.  Successful, dependable, and trustworthy–that’s Audrey. She’d be the perfect girlfriend for her childhood crush, billionaire Cade Archer…except that she’s pretty sure she’s not even on his radar. But when fate (and her chaotic twin) come together, Audrey finds out that she’ll be spending the next month with Cade at his remote cabin retreat. It’s a dream come true…

Until she meets her worst nightmare.

Billionaire playboy Reese Durham is used to seducing women to get what he wants. But when stiff, too-proper Audrey bursts into the private mountain lodge and scares his companion out the door, it’s time for a little revenge. It’s clear that Audrey’s in love with his buddy, Cade…and it’s clear to Reese that blackmailing Audrey with this information can get her to agree to just about anything. Like furtive kisses in the dark, or a secret rendezvous in the woods. Audrey may think she knows what she wants, but Reese is determined to show her what she needs.

And as Reese discovers the volatile minx behind the buttoned-up exterior, he starts to think maybe she’s just what he needs, too.

And finally we have the cover for BURNED the 2nd book in Karen Marie Moning’s spin-off series.
