The Good, the Bad and the Are-You-Kidding-Me?

This week’s topic was decided after reading a comment from LSUReader on last week’s Romance and Me post. She pointed out how often characters’ physical flaws aren’t shown on the covers. We agree that this is an interesting topic, so this week we’ll be telling you about covers that got it wrong! While researching this topic we noticed that it’s harder than we thought to remember the BAD one sin this case. So please share you’re discoveries with us.

Susi: I actually really like these covers. The colors are so lush and for me they show how I imagine the downside. But for me the girl doesn’t look like Chess at all. She looks too healthy to be a drug addict and her tattoos aren’t runes. No idea what these cover artists think runes …

The Good: Interview with cover artist Tony Mauro

As you may have noticed we two are a bit cover art obsessed and we always swoon about the good ones more than it should actually be allowed. One cover crushing later we thought it would be nice to ask the actually artists behind our obsession about what this work is like.

So here we are- thrilled to no end to welcome Tony Mauro here at Book Lovers Inc today. He’s one of our favorite cover artist and today he will talk a bit about his work. Please give him a warm welcome.

BLI: Tony can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Tony: After graduating from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1991, I returned to my home town of Buffalo NY and spent a few years working as an airbrush illustrator at a company that specialized in pro sports apparel. In 1994, …

Today we want to talk about a topic that irks the hell out of us. We are sure you noticed this too but we finally couldn’t hold back any longer. Changing the cover model in the middle of the series seems to be a bigger habit than we thought so we tried to come up with a few examples to show you how it’s well and not so well done. Here’s what we found. Let us know what you think about our selection.

Susi: Our first example is probably also the one where this whole different cover model problem is handled best. You can’t really see her face on Alpha so it’s harder to noticed that it’s not the same girl. I actually really like how they …

This week we decided to let our snarky-self free (not like we’re usually nice or anything *wink*) and give you the worst of German and French vampire book covers. Ok so maybe they aren’t the worst but they wouldn’t make us pick up the books. This selection left us a bit frustrated. This week we’re not fighting for best covers but Worst covers! Help us decide which country wins (or in this case loses lol because there’s no winning with such uglies)

Caroline’s Selection:

Caroline: The Kerrelyn Sparks cover is just plain scary. That guy looks like a crazy psycho and I can’t stare too long of I’ll end up …

We didn’t do one of these Books-we-can’t-wait-for posts in a while so we thought it is time to remedy that.

So many great books on our to-buy lists for 2011 and some of them are rather pretty, too. But make your own decision.

Let us know what you think about our pretties and we’d love to hear what your cover candies of 2011 are so far.

Caroline’s Selection:

Caroline: I fell in love with the new Moira Rogers covers. Bree and Donna posted the covers of Sabine and Kisri a few days ago and I couldn’t take my eyes of the cover of Kisri. I find it fascinating and so pretty. The model is gorgeous and she …

This week, we’re taking you to Germany and its covers. After our deep view into the french way today you are introduced to the Lederhosen and Bretzel way of book covers (and yes I can make prejudiced fun of it). As every other country we have the good and the bad and here are some of them. Let us know what you think about them.

Susi: I really like the German cover of Shades of Gray BUT I like the first one more. Why? First this one is blue and I’m not very fond of this color and second why is there a blue woman on the cover? I don’t get it. But yes it’S pretty …

This week, we’re taking you to France! The country of love (Caroline says: *snort*), good food and wine- they should know what a good romance cover should look like! But take a look for yourself- here are some new French releases of books you probably know. Caroline spent hours on the French amazon and raided publishers sites to get you the Good and the Bad and yes also the Are-You-Kidding-Me. Let us know what you think about the French way to entice you to buy them- or not.

Susi: The Mary J. Davidson books looks as ridiculous as the original ones. I’m not much for these comic style covers but I have never read one …

Happy New everyone! The new year 2011 just started so we thought it would be great to look back at 2010 and the covers it gave us. Being the shallow cover whores we are we had a huge stack to chose from and it was not easy. As always there are the Good and the Bad but this time we tried to keep our explanations short because most of those covers already made it in our posts over the year. Let us know which are your tops ad flops..

This week we have a special topic to talk about. Covers that are just plain wrong, literally. We decided to make this post after seeing a tweet from Nicole Peeler about her new German cover. She pointed out the wrongness of it and we couldn’t resist. We noticed this in the past and thought we will show you our top 3 of just stupidly wrong covers.

Susi: Okay this cover is wrong in so many ways. I don’t know why German publishers does this so often but it’s rather common here to show something totally wrong and deceiving on the cover. So here we have a book about Selkies showing a mermaid. O_O And not even pretty one for that. I don’t really like blueish covers and this …

So we 2 discovered something last week and yes yes we know that we really live under a rock and all. Did you know that certain audiobooks had different covers from the print books? WE didn’t! When Caro told me we could talk about that in our cover post I was like ‘yeah very different cover. We can talk about the different Unabridged fonts’.

But I’m now aware of the fact that she was right. And yes you are allowed to write that in your calendar.

Okay so here is what we found rather interesting:

Audiobook Covers – Jeaniene Frost edition

Caroline: I think the cover of One Foot in the Grave is pretty amazing. (you should look at it in big). The cover model looks kick-ass, and she’s …
