Interview: Author Linda Robertson + Giveaway!

Filed in Giveaways , Interview , Linda Robertson , The HEA Lover Posted on July 9, 2010 @ 11:00 am 80 comments
Today I’m very happy to welcome Linda Robertson on Book Lovers,Inc. *squee* Linda is the author of the Persephone Alcmedi series, her latest book Fatal Circle was released earlier this month. Bienvenue Linda!
The HEA Lover: Linda can you please tell us a bit about yourself?
Linda: Well, I’ve been a cashier, a gas station attendant, a retail associate, a restaurant hostess, a college student, a Marketing Director for a realty company, but fulfilling my dream of being a published author blows all that away! I like rock-n-roll, Star Trek, and Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout beer. Oh, and I doodle dragons when I’m bored.
The HEA Lover: Describe a typical day of writing? Are you a planner or pantser?
Linda: There is a ritual to go through before I start…I brew a cup of decaf Kahlua Crème coffee, add the Hershey syrup and the Torani Peppermint syrup, top it with whipped cream, say a few affirmations as I sprinkle purple sugar on top, and I’m off to writing. It used to be that I’d outline everything, every detail, but I’ve let go of that little by little until I’m more of a pantser now. I write the highlights down in the document in bullet form, notate the day it happens in the story and other details I may need, then I just write.
The HEA Lover: What do you think is the difference between a reader and a real Book Lover?
Linda: Hmmm. A reader is someone who reads for pleasure, but in a variety of genres, bouncing from fiction to biography to non-fiction, reading whatever is of interest to them at that time. A real Book Lover is someone who has a distinct fandom of a specific genre, and while they may be open to its subgenres, they always, always have something to read in that genre that they are passionate about.
The HEA Lover: What can you tell us about Persephone’s world?
Linda: A lot of Urban Fantasy takes place in an alternate earth that is either established in the fact that a.) supernatural creatures exist and everyone knows it, or b.) supernatural creatures exist and only a few, select people know about it. In Persephone’s world, we’re in between all that. The supernaturals came out twenty years ago and the dust hasn’t settled yet. Not everyone is happy about it, and the supernaturals are still struggling to gain their footholds.
The HEA Lover: Most UF Heroines are self-centered and prone to violence, Persephone differentiates herself by being the kind of friend everyone would love to have. Why didn’t you make Seph the typical kick ass chick?
Linda: Oh, I wrote heroines like that. I just couldn’t get them published. Eventually, the light bulb had to come on over my head, right? I mean a self-centered and prone-to-violence person is not someone I see myself warming up to in real life, so it makes it tough for me to root for a character like that on the page. In truth, Johnny was the first character to come to me for this, and Seph developed as I asked, “What kind of a woman would be with Johnny?” He politely bowed out of the spotlight and she took over.
The HEA Lover: Johnny is the lead singer in a Rock band *screaming fan girl moment here*…Did you listen to music while writing? If so what was on your playlist?
Linda: Always listen to music as I write, though admittedly I cannot write while there are words being sung. I stop typing and sing along. So, while writing I listen to movie scores—especially Hans Zimmer scores—they’re great for mood and emotion and sometimes I’ll put together a playlist of action sequences from various movies, or angry or romantic sequences to fit the mood of what I’m writing. That said, I’m a rock-n-roll girl. The summer before my senior year I was the lead guitarist in an almost-all-girl cover band. We were the house band and played every Thursday night, and had dibs on opening up for other bands coming through, or filling in when the weekend was open. It was back in the big-hair and spandex days; it was a blast. I still love all those metal bands, but I’ve gotten into some industrial and goth bands since then. Celldweller or Flesh Field sounds most like what I envision Lycanthropia would be like. Porcelain and the Tramps are edgy and I love their songs. There’s really too many to list, but in brief, I like Evanescence, Within Temptation, Rob Zombie, and Nickelback when they’re rockin’. Pretty eclectic mix, huh??
The HEA Lover: I LOVE Celldweller (Switchback, Frozen) and Porcelain and The Tramps (King of the World, Gasoline), you might be the first person I meet who likes Porcelain!! No wonder I love this series!!! *squeee*
The HEA Lover: Is there a special band you had in mind when you imagined Johnny’s band?
Linda: Not to start with, but after the fact a pal of mine suggested I give Celldweller a listen. I did and though the look is not the same, the sound definitely is. To me, anyway.
The HEA Lover: Where did you get the idea to give Seph Amenemhab, her Jackal spirit guide? And how would you describes Seph’s magic?
Linda: With Seph growing up during that time when all the supernaturals came out, and being left behind by her mother to be raised by her grandmother, I figured she needed someone to talk to. Meditation is well-accepted part of paganism and so is the notion of spirit guides and totem animals. It seemed the best way to give her support that could change and grow with her, from times when her school friends couldn’t know she was a witch, and on to the destiny she’s now embracing.
I would describe Seph’s magic as a deeply rooted part of her religion, paganism. Some heroines have inherent power within and can poof! produce a display of showy magic. There’s nothing wrong with that, and Seph has learned to use the leyline to have such power at hand(though there’s a cost…), but I wanted her to be grounded spiritually with this power, to respect it and be humbled by it, to have structure and ramifications, and to build her connection to the goddess who bestowed this destiny upon her.
The HEA Lover: What can we expect of Fatal Circle?
Linda: Mwahahahaha! Expect to see more of Menessos. Expect the stakes to have been raised. For everyone.
The HEA Lover: Should we Love or Hate Johnny? I was not happy with him in Hallowed Circle will he make it up to Seph in Fatal Circle?
Linda: Oh, love him! He was a victim of circumstance. J His heart (and technically the rest of him) was in the right place…or rather was not in the wrong place.
The HEA Lover: Will there be more books in this series?
Linda: I recently turned in the fourth installment, ARCANE CIRCLE, which is scheduled to be released on December 29th, 2010. I’ve known where I wanted to go since the beginning, but there’s so much that has to be done for this tale! The stage is really just getting set with FATAL CIRCLE. ARCANE CIRCLE takes another step forward, but the fifth book (untitled) is where all of these threads and plotlines and characters start to weave irreparably together….
The HEA Lover: Now can you tell us 3 reasons why people should read your books?

Linda:
1.) Persephone is a heroine you will like and root for!
2.) Johnny is a hot, tattooed, motorcycle-riding, werewolf bad-boy in a band. He’s decided that Seph is The One for Him, and he likes to talk to her in fun, sexy innuendos.
3.) Menessos is a hot, cultured, limo-chauffered, master vampire. He’s also decided that Seph is The One for Him, and he has the power to ignite her desire in a way that Johnny can’t.

The HEA Lover: What is next on your schedule? Do you plan on writing other series?

Linda: I want to continue the Circle series until I get it done and to that end I’m currently compiling my notes for the fifth Circle book. But meanwhile, to gain some clarity by way of a break, I’m re-working one of those old stories with the unlikable, kick-ass heroine, reforming her into a character we can root for, too.
The HEA Lover: Thank you so much for taking the time to answer our questions. This was a lot of fun!!
Linda: My pleasure! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to chat about the stories!

I haven't started this series yet, but this interview has made me move it up in the TBR pile.

My question for Linda is about Persephone's name. Did you chose it with a purpose? It's a great name, but I was just wondering if you were thinking of the mythological aspect of it and if maybe that had some impact on her as a character? Since i haven't read it, I can't guess if her story follows similar lines as the myth or not, but it'd be kinda cool if it did 🙂 I'm big fan of Greek mythology in general and new interpretations especially.

  • Victoria July 9, 2010 at 1:03 pm

Hi Linda – This looks really good. I love the bad ass motorcycle riding were :). Was wondering, since you doodle dragons are you going to write a dragon story?

  • van_pham July 9, 2010 at 1:28 pm

I love your Circle series, Can't wait to start Fatal Circle, and am so glad that we only have to wait till December for the next book 😀

Hi Linda! I loved Vicious Circle and can't wait to read the next books in the series. I totally get not being able to concentrate with music with words on. But I'm distracted by the little noises that pop up when everything's turned off. I go for nature sounds when I need to focus.
Do you have an ereader, or are you a hold-in-my-hot-little-hands kind of girl?

  • rachel445 July 9, 2010 at 2:20 pm

Haven't read this series yet, but I've heard good things about it. A hot, tattooed, motorcycle-riding werewolf bad boy? Sounds like a must for me 🙂 The books are now on my TBR list.

Linda, thank you again so much for this interview!!! *squee* You're welcome back here whenever you want!

Somehow I missed picking up the first two books in the series. I can see that I need to remedy that situation as soon as possible because the more I hear about the third book, the more I want to get started on the series and the more left out I feel.

HAWKEYEGIRL– I chose her name because of the Greek myth. When I created her backstory, I made it so she comes froma long line of Greek witches, all named for goddesses or muses and the like. I never intended to write a modern retelling of the Persephone myth, but I've had fun giving a few 'nods' to that myth here and there.
VICTORIA– hmm…not dragons as main characters, but there are dragons, minorly, in Arcane CIrcle, due January 2011.

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 8:06 pm

Hi Van!! Nice to see you again!

BETHANY– I am definitely a 'hold that book in my hot little hands' girl. For now. Technology has a way of wooing me. But it tends to be a long courtship. 🙂

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 8:08 pm

RACHEL445 & CRYSTALGB so glad you stopped by today!

    JEN7WATERS –squee!

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 8:10 pm

CAROLINE!!! THANK YOU! (sorry I'm showing up late–it's been THAT kind of day…apologies, apologies)

I'll drop by anytime you let me. 🙂

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 8:15 pm

BARBARA E– thanks so much for stopping by! (And please do check them out!)

TINA– Let me say this first: I'm one of those people who think that TV series (like the old Beauty and the Beast &/or Moonlighting)are wonderful when the sexual tension is there, but once hero and heroine are cemented as an item, then they are less interesting TO ME. With Johnny, Persephone /has/ the relationship. With Menessos, she /has/ the sexual tension. Best of both worlds?

  • Carmen R July 9, 2010 at 8:16 pm

    Hey Linda,

Of course you already know how much I love your books, since I show up everywhere and say so 🙂 I still haven't read Fatal Circle yet ( I know I'm being a bad fan) but I hope to be able to buy it soon. I can't think of any questions, but I'll try to come up with some before Dragon Con.

p.s If Persephone doesn't want Menessos please send him to me. I'll even pay for his postage. 😀

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 8:17 pm

STACEY–I love the variations in the power/personality/character that you get with the mixed "monsters."

ROBIN K–The innuendos make Johnny dearer to my heart. He sounds like every dirty-minded rock-n-roller I've ever known. 🙂

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 8:19 pm

CARMEN–Heck, I'd pay postage for him! No pressure from me, but..um…well, there's ALOT of Menessos in FATAL CIRCLE.

  • Rhonda July 9, 2010 at 8:19 pm

I absolutely love your books! I've read Vicious Circle, just finished Hallowed Circle, and can't wait to read Fatal Circle. I think Seph rocks and I hope that she ends up with Johhny! For now anyway…LOL!

    Rhonda [at] scottish.witch@earthlink.net

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 8:26 pm

RHONDA– YAY!!! Thanks for stoppin by!

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 8:40 pm

The COMMENT DELETED by the author makes me sad. Isn't that goofy? I know it's probably something posted by someone who's already posted, and they erased it because they misspelled something or other (I've done that) but it makes my creative juices roil around. Like…maybe there's a Johnny out there who was revealing himself (no pun intended, but hey…) Maybe he was ready to give us some dandy cooking tips. Maybe he'd share some lyrics.

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 8:41 pm

OOO, did you guys see this? http://juno-books.com/blog/?p=1022 ARCANE CIRCLE cover.

  • FairieGodMother July 9, 2010 at 9:06 pm

Linda, you are such a tease. You and i both know it. just as I gear up to read the three books again you have to go and dangle the elusive 4th book at me knowing I can't have it. ARGH! I want my book fix now! Oh and *stalk* 🙂

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 9:09 pm

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Hey… a FairieGodMother is stalking me… didn't Sleeping Beauty have 3 Fairie God Mothers? I begin to see a possible reason as to why I've been so sleepy lately…

  • Carmen R July 9, 2010 at 9:11 pm

Oh man the ARCANE CIRCLE cover rocks!

  • FairieGodMother July 9, 2010 at 9:14 pm

Sleeping beauty did have three, but she didn't have Seph and Johnny looking after her. If you're sleepy it's because you aren't working fast enough to keep my book appetite fed! LOL

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 9:14 pm

CARMEN– Totally. Hmmm, I wonder what the dragon and foo dog mean…???

    MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 9:17 pm

FAIRIEGODMOTHER– or pe trhaps I am working to hard? to fast? Or are you implying that by not working fast enough, you're cusring me with slumber whereas I cannot work fast enough and creating a–VICIOUS CIRCLE– of sorts. Hmmm??

  • FairieGodMother July 9, 2010 at 9:19 pm

🙂 ah, to see the mind of a writer at work.. I shall let you slumber then, but not for a hundred years though. I can't wait for your books that long without going crazy. … er

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 9:25 pm

A hundred years would be bad. I mean, even good dreams would have to run out by then, right? How long did Rumplestilskin sleep? I wonder what he dreamed.

** and I apologize profusely for the lack of spelling proficientcy in the previous post. I actually CAN spell "perhaps" as well as "cursing" but sometimes my fingers are flying and get out of order, or add things in.

  • Sandy Jay July 9, 2010 at 9:29 pm

Master vampires and bad-boy werewolves all in one series. How much better can it get? I haven't read any of these but they're going on my wishlist now. Please enter me in the contest.

    forwhlz at gmail dot com

  • FairieGodMother July 9, 2010 at 9:30 pm

😀 hahah perhaps you should stop trying to write tonight seeing that you just banged your head against the desk

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 9:34 pm

SANDY JAY & MARISKA Hello and thanks for stopping by. I apparently cannot spell tonight, but otherwise I seem to be having a dandy time. (And in case anyone is wondering, um, no…there are no margarita's involved my inability here. Just clumsy fingers.)

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 9:35 pm

But FairieGodMother…if I stop writing tonight that means I'll stop commenting to you. (I am a little sleepy…)

  • Carmen R July 9, 2010 at 9:36 pm

Linda that's the problem, you need a margarita or a few and then you wouldn't even notice your spelling

  • Linda Robertson July 9, 2010 at 9:45 pm

CARMEN– LOL!!! Well then…that's all the "go get 'em, author" I need.

Actually, here in Ohio it's nearly 11 pm and its WAY past my bedtime. I'll be back tomorrow. Y'all play nice while I'm gone.

  • JenM July 9, 2010 at 11:27 pm

I've read plenty of UF books with angsty and twisted heroines, but not many where the heroine would be described as "nice", so that would be a welcome change. Add in a bad-boy werewolf musician and I'm totally there.

  • Sullivan McPig July 10, 2010 at 2:38 am

This series is on my wish list and after reading this interview it bumbeo it's way up higher on the list. And already I'm rooting for the werewolf.

  • linaramz July 10, 2010 at 3:25 am

Vicious Circle was great and it would be soooo cool to win Hallowed Circle and Fatal Circle! *fingers crossed*

JEN M–yeah, Persephone is more like a normal young woman, used to hiding her witchiness from her friends, who suddenly has this big destiny and more attention than she wants. Not very angsty.

SULLIVAN McPIG–nice to see you again!

LINARAMZ–Thanks! And thanks for stopping by!

  • throuthehaze July 10, 2010 at 11:12 am

Thanks for stopping by and good luck to you both!

  • Donna July 10, 2010 at 3:48 pm

I've found that I like books based on worlds where the supernaturals are known and not in hiding more than when it's vise versa. Looking forward to this series!

+1 review comment! Nice review Caroline!

  • Linda Robertson July 10, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Hi Donna! Thanks for stopping by. UF usually comes in the "closed world" kind where no one knows, or in the "open world" kind where everyone knows. My books are "open" but newly open, so everyone is still dealing with it. I've had a lot of fun with that.

  • debbie July 11, 2010 at 7:07 am

I haven't read any of this series, but it sounds really good. I was wondering, who has influenced your writing the most?
    debbie
    twoofakind12@yahoo.com

  • Jessica July 11, 2010 at 8:18 am

My question for Linda is: what was your road to publication like? Every author has a different story and I just like to hear them because I'm an aspiring writer myself and wanted to know if you had any advice.

I commented on the book review as well!

  • Giada M July 11, 2010 at 8:41 am

    Hi Linda!:)
You're a new author to me and thanks to your interesting interview, now I can't wait to read your Persephone Alcmedi series.
Thank you for making this awesome contest interntional!
I have a question for you….have you ever kept a dream journal for inspiration?

    Greetings from Italy!

    Giada M.

    fabgiada (at) gmail (dot) com

  • Linda Robertson July 11, 2010 at 9:45 am

debbie– Hi! Who has influenced my writing most? Hmmm…my editor Paula Guran has certainly taught me some things I didn't know. My writing group has been very influential as well…they're a group of gals who all met at conventions in writing workshops and the like and because of common interests starting a writing group.

  • Linda Robertson July 11, 2010 at 9:51 am

JESSICA– My path to publication is about 22 years long. I submitted to everyone and have the stack of rejections to prove it. (This was back in the day of snail mail and paper replies.) I even have a handful of rejections from my current agent. hee hee hee. In the end, I'd given up on NY publishers and agents and I submitted to a small press, JUNO BOOKS and was rejected. BUT…the editor sent in her rejection a list of WHY. THAT was a guidebook. Knowing what was wrong meant I knew what to fix. I did and months later asked if I could resubmit. She said yes and then accepted it. Before the contract could come, JUNO was acquired in a co-publishing deal with POCKET so my book came out from a NY publisher, but I got in the back door!!
Getting published is a whole lot about craft and story(something I think writers /never/ stop learning), a whole lot about persistance, and a somewhat about going to conventions and events where you can make an impression on agents and editors in person.

  • Linda Robertson July 11, 2010 at 9:54 am

Giada M.– my very first vampire story (a trilogy that has never found a publisher) spawned from a dream, but I have not kept a dream journal. I don't dream much that I remember and when I do it is /usually/ just weird stuff without substance to build on. I have an idea file, though.

  • Nicole July 11, 2010 at 10:21 am

Hi Linda! My question would be, do any of the books, or scenes in the books have a special place in your heart above the others?

  • Nicole July 11, 2010 at 10:21 am

Hi Linda! My question would be, do any of the books, or scenes in the books have a special place in your heart above the others?

NICOLE! — hi! The end scenes of FATAL CIRCLE are my favorites, but the scenes with the character Beau were pretty enjoyable too.

  • A Simple Love of Reading July 12, 2010 at 8:13 am

I haven't started this series yet, but I'm looking forward to being immersed in Linda's world! I have done a lot of the same jobs you have held in the past, although I've never done anything as "fancy" (lol) as a marketing director or college student! HAHA! I love your take on readers and book lovers, and completely agree, I like to think of myself as a "book lover" because no matter what I always return to the supernatural, in fact probably about 90% of the 600+ books I own are either PNR or UF!

Great interview! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

A Simple Love of Reading–thanks for stopping by! I read outside my genre very little because I'm often not entertained by other kinds of stories. Same with movies. Gimme Sci-fi/action/ fantasy and keep the chick flicks and tear-jerkers away from me.

  • Rosie July 12, 2010 at 1:05 pm

Wow, after reading your description of Johnny, I'm definitely not walking, but running to get book one in your series. Thanks for stopping by . . . loved the interview!!

  • tina werner July 12, 2010 at 7:13 pm

loved your answer about the difference between a reader and a real book lover… what do you think the allure is to book lovers of the paranormal? what makes us crave it?

    stampitchick at yahoo dot ca

  • Linda Robertson July 12, 2010 at 7:18 pm

Rosie– no, no, thank YOU for stoppin by!!!

Tina– GOOD QUESTION! I think the allure of the alpha males are part of it, most people enjoy the little bit of romance, but when you can connect to the characters–and I think a lot of women like to read about women who have some cool power that gives them at least a /sense/ of some more control over things in their life. Put something at stake, something to gain, sprinkle in danger and bake. Yippee-kai-ay! 🙂

What do YOU think makes us crave it?

  • heatwave16 July 12, 2010 at 8:32 pm

    Hi Linda,

The series sounds great. Is there a love triangle working with the were & vamp? Plus, how did you come up with the name Persephone? It's such an unusual name.

  • Linda Robertson July 13, 2010 at 12:27 pm

Hi Heatwave16! Nice to see you here! The vampire in the story wants badly to have Persephone because, like the werewolf, he thinks she's the one for him, but alas, their relationship is unique and complicated, but not sexual at this time.

Persephone is so named because she comes from a long line of Greek witches and I wanted them all to be named for various goddesses and muses from mythology. I didn't choose her name specifically to play with the myth associated to it, but as the series has progressed I have given a few "nods" to the myth here and there. 🙂

I've been wanting to read this series for a while, but haven't gotten my hands on the first book yet.

Hey Linda! Wow, doodling dragons? That is impressive as I would imagine dragons are not easy to draw. Are you talented in drawing or dragons are just your specialty? 🙂

Yummy, if I drank that deliciously divine coffe concoction you make daily, I would rather curl up witha good book in a comfy armchair rather than start working. 😉 But of course my work isn't as excviting as telling stories, so maybe that's why I'd rather choose reading aabout stories 🙂

Do you have a favourite cocktail? I'm a cocktail fan, always looking for new recipes.

Thank you for the fantastic giveaway Linda!!

This book sounds great. I love strong heroines but some of my favorite ones are like yours. They do what they need to do no matter the cost. They may not be as strong magically or physically as some of the other heroines but mentally they are giants. These are going on my tbb list. I'd love to win the first one in this series.

These books have somehow gone under my radar. If there is a hot werewolf in them, I simply must get them. I love werewolves.

Hi Ina! I am hoping to have at least 9 books in this series. Thanks for stoppin by!

Hi Books and Bane! If I couldn't write anymore, I'd be VERY UNHAPPY. I don't know what else I'd do. I'd probably go back to school.

Hi Tynga! It was my pleasure to be a part of the Paranormal Summerfest!! That first book is getting hard to find. Try your local library! Make 'em order it in for you!!!

Hi Stella! I prefer dragons, horses, unicorns, etc. and my boys tend to like all that fantasy-type stuff most of all. 🙂 My favorite cocktail is a PAMArita, it's a pomagranate margarita. YUM!! I tend to like sweet drinks, like Kahluah and Creme and Peppermint schnapps, or Malibu and pineapple juice. Margaritas are easy to order tho. 🙂

Hi Pamk! I am hearing that the first book is hard to find. Good luck to you–but if nothing else, put it on order from your local library!

Hi MBreakfield! Please do! I want to be on your radar!! 🙂

Great interview. I have been reading about these books recently and they sound great. Really looking forward to picking them up. Thanks for taking the time and sharing!

Question for Linda: Your titles are so interesting, How do you come to pick them out? Do you start with a title, then write around that, does the title change as the novel reveals itself, or is choosing your title the last finishing touch to your writing?

Thank you, I am very interested in reading this book, and the previous two!

Your review has made me want to read this arc of books! Especially caught by the sqealling of joy, anticipation, excitement you expressed!

I look forward to reading all three books, even if I start with Linda's Fatal Circle! (I can always go back and reading the first two…like Star wars!)

Thank you for hosting this giveaway.

Hi Lu! My favorite word is "groovy." It's outdated but I like it anyway.

Hi DonnaS! Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Terry Mac! Vicious Circle was changed from Full Circle. Hallowed stayed the same, and Fatal Circle was originally Dead Circle (even says so inside the cover of Vicious Circle–bit of trivia for you there) but there were too many titles with 'dead' in them coming out areound then so the editor and I worked on a new title and settled on Fatal. Arcane Circle didn't change. So 2 out of 2. 🙂 I try to find a word to fit in front of "circle" that relates to the story I've written. I don't know if I could write a story to fit a title. WOuld be an interesting experiment. 🙂
