Explore This! Avebury, England (with a pinch of London)

This week, I’m whisking you all off to Avebury, which looks very much like it’s in the heart of farming country in England. It is, in fact, only 32 kilometres away from the more famous stone circle, Stonehenge, though Avebury appears to be older (I got this information from the Wiki entry that I’ve linked below). What I also discovered while looking into Avebury is that there are solstice festivals celebrated there and it seems to still have ties to the old philosophies of witchcraft or pagan religions. For me, this is very cool. I went a little bit geeky researcher on this one because Stonehenge has always been on the top of my “places to visit” list, since reading a Hardy Boys mystery that featured these standing stones. It’s my current read of The Guardian of the Gate by Michelle Zink that brought about my interest specifically in Avebury. The girls in the book start off their journey in London, so I’ve included a few pics from there also. I hope you enjoy!

A bit of morning mist and the sheep enjoying (what I can only imagine as) the solitude of the area.

A few cows with a background of the mysterious hill at Silbury.
These two pictures show aerial views of the stones and what has been referred to as “crop circles”.
The quaint thatch-roofed pub in Avebury and visitors to the stones.
More views of the Henge and the surrounding village.
The hill at Silbury.
Mist, stones, thatched cottage…does this not embody peaceful living?
The Tower Bridge, London
Big Ben
The London Skyline
One of my fave places, The Tower of London….what history here! (however gruesome)

I only wish I could remember which Hardy Boys book it was that piqued my interest so many years ago, but, if, like me, you enjoy stories involving the standing stones with ties to druids, et al, you can also check out Diana Gabaldon’s The Outlander series. And if you know of any great books featuring the Henges, etc., let me know below. I’d love to hear about them!

I actually visited all the places above back in '05. I love England. I kept thinking of all my beloved historical romances & Bridget Jones while I was there! Thanks for the pics.

@Scorpio – I'm green with envy! I would so be Bridget with the big hair after the car ride through the country to get to Avebury though, lol.

@Jenny – Thanks! I wish I could take credit for the aerials 😉 Maybe one day…

@brandileigh – There's an air of mystery to the area that makes it more attractive, no?
