Hey Everyone!
We would like to introduce to you a new weekly feature here at Book Lovers Inc:
Smut in the City!

Though we believe the name speaks for itself, just a few words to tell you what you can expect in these Saturday posts. As book lovers we tend to discuss the latest books we read and loved rather passionately, and the swoonworthy heroes always get a special place in our hearts (and impassioned ramblings 😉 lol), so we thought why not make Saturdays our weekly occasion to share with each other the latest hot books we discovered, the yummy heroes that make our hearts beat faster and just to gather around cocktails and girl talk? So please join us, grab yourself a Margarita, Cosmopolitan, Mojito or whatever is your personal poison, sit comfortably and let the talk about anything sexy, sensual, smutty or just plain hot begin! 🙂

When planning this feature, the question arose: how did it all start? What hot book sent us down the path of smutty romances and droolworthy men? We thought back hard (for some it was harder to remember the very first sexy book, since they have read so many since ;-p), so for this introductory post, read on to see how we discovered this hidden and delicious genre.
Bea (The Charmed Lover): I’m not sure exactly how old I was when I read my first smutty/sexy book, but I think I was around twelve. My parents were both big readers, my mother taught English at the local high school. We always had books in the house, and I practically lived at my school library and the two local libraries. I’m pretty sure that the first romance I read was one of my mother’s; it was definitely a Rosemary Rogers book.

I don’t remember which Rogers book it was, it had a young innocent girl who wanted to be a nun and the “horrible” man she was forced to marry. I have a vague recollection of her being branded on her thigh. It was a typical book of the times – arrogant, cruel misogynystic, older male; innocent, virginal teen girl; sex scenes that were really rape, etc.  The sort of book that I avoid at all costs these days.

There was a lot that was over my head when I read it, I was really too young for it. I did enjoy it and went on to read many more Rosemary Rogers books and others that were similar. These days, I avoid any books that even sound like them but I still enjoy reading romances and yes, smutty books. Erotica is a fave of mine and I love that it’s more mainstream now. Although, I still don’t read them in public. 😛
Amanda (The Winged Lover): Hmmm, the first book i read with a sex scene was Ship of Destiny by Robin Hobb when I was 12. It was a series I picked up from my school library that was a high fantasy. I kind of didn’t think anything of it hehe, I understood it but it was just part of the story.

The first erotic story was when I was fifteen, and it was online. I kind of found that by accident but it was a pretty good story and it sent me looking for more.

I’ve read heaps of other books with smutty parts in them that I absolutely love! Sookie Stackhouse, Night Huntress, Shadowfae Chronicles etc Mostly vampires and werewolves.

The first full blown erotic novel that I purchased was Tempting the Beast by Lora Leigh this year.
Larissa (The Crazy Lover): Mine was actually a funny story. I was about 20 at the time and my Grandmother gave me Narcissus in Chains by Laurel K Hamilton as a gift. I devoured it and loved it, but it was my first steamy book and I was quite shocked with parts of it LOL.

The thing is that, at the time my English wasn’t as good as it is now, so there were parts I didn’t really got what was going on, so when I finally read the whole series a couple years ago and re-read the book, I was able to appreciate it more =)
Jackie (The Quirky Lover): The first smutty book I read I can’t even remember the title. I was about 12 and found one of my mom’s romance novels. It was a totally new experience, to say the least, lol. The first actual title I can remember was Forever by Judy Blume. It’s a bit light on the smut side in comparison to books I’ve read since but it still stands out.

I had taken a hiatus from reading for several years when my daughter was young, so last year Mel at He Followed Me Home told me to get into reading the Twilight series, which I did. Soooo not smutty, right? Well, then I found FanFiction.net with all of its Twi inspired stories. There were 3 in particular that I enjoyed: The Office by tby789, involving lots of La Perla panties being ripped and 2 stories, the same but from different POV’s, The Dominant and The Submissive by tara sue me, that were just….well, phew!

I have to say, overall, I enjoy a book with a great story line but it’s that much better when there’s some hotness involved too. It always makes for entertaining reading 😉
Caroline (The HEA Lover): This is a tough question *puts on the thinking hat*.

I think the first smutty book I read was Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost. Like Jackie I started reading the Twilight series and then I needed something else to read afterward and had no idea what. At that time I didn’t know anything about book blogs or GoodReads…so I listened to Amazon’s recommendations, and I somehow ended up ordering the Jeaniene Frost book. I blushed and blushed while reading it. Oh my! I thought it was wicked and I never thought I’d get used to it. LOL I was a bit ashamed to be seen with it. I kept on reading  I NEVER thought I’d end up reading Erotica. Now I’m totally addicted and the Jeaniene Frost books look pretty tamed compared to what I read now. *g*

Melissa (The Spellbound Lover): The first smutty book I ever read was given to me for my 16th birthday.  My Mum and Aunty had gone shopping and got a few books on sale and they gave me Savage Wonder.  I started reading it and whoa!! the sex scenes were pretty hot.  Once I finished it I tagged a few really good scenes and read them out one day and the look on their faces were priceless.  There were maybe a couple of books I’d been told to read after, Cold Heart Canyon by Clive Barker(which was kinda gross) and Once.. by James Herbert which was interesting and a bit full on but that’s it.  These days F.E Heaton’s Winter’s First Kiss probably stands out for me as one that I’ve read recently.  I can’t wait to read Her Dark Angel as well.

Becky (The Lit Lover): I have to admit that I have never been a reader of erotica/romance, I have always been more of a literary person. I do remember reading the Clan of the Cave Bear series by Jean M Auel in high school and being wowed by all the very erotic sex scenes. I also had that same feeling when I read The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simmons in high school – although there wasn’t quite as much sex in that as there was in the Clan of the Cave Bear series. I did feel quite naughty reading them.
Has (The Smutty Lover): I think my first real book that actually had a love scene was Forever by Judy Blume – it was pretty risque at the time and it was a book that was passed around at school because it had a ‘rep’, and I picked it up from the local library. After that I glommed her books and loved them because she really captured emotions and adult situations really well for a younger audience.

But my first real hot, love scene was Rosemary Rogers Sweet Savage Love. I did not like the romance because it was old skool bodice ripper, although at the time that style was pretty much the norm and it featured a brutish hero and the heroine was beyond annoying but it was my first real hawt romance. I soon picked other authors from the 1980s such as Johanna  Lindsey (whose covers at the time got me into trouble, they featured almost nekked men with huge mantitties thrust against their heroines!) Laurie Mcbain and Jude Devereux – and they all wrote steamy scenes and helped to cement my love for historical romance.

Jenn (The YA Lover): Honestly, I have never really read an erotic novel before *Blush*

Stella (The Latin Lover): The first sexy/smutty book I’ve read? Hmm let me think.. Oh I know! The very first book I read which had a sex scene in it was Born in Fire by Nora Roberts. I was 14-15, my best friend brought it to school and I was intrigued by the mysterious cover so asked her to lend it to me (I thought it was a book about witches!). So imagine my surprise when I discovered as I read on that it had some pretty hot, sensual love scenes! I fell in love with the romance genre and Nora Roberts at that moment. 🙂

Then, sometime in university I went to the library to study and found the Velvet series by Jude Devereaux..oh my! These were more graphic and smuttier than the gentle romance novels I’ve read before. Then my very first erotica? It was Ménage by Emma Holly. I only have one word for it, and that is “wow”. Since then I discovered I really like my romance novels smutty or at least sexy ;-))

Susi (The Geeky Lover): Ohhhh the first one I ever read. Huh? *puts thinking hat on* What do you mean with “smutty”? Just with sex inside? That would be Dark Lover by J.R. Ward and Amazon recommended it to me after I read the Twilight books. LOL Yep, I didn’t know about the blogoverse at that moment and I had to trust amazon for recs. How sad is that?

From that day on I was hooked and had a 3 months readathon so to say. Read like 20-30 books per month but yep I didn’t do much else. And they all were romance books, different genres but romance at heart. At first I started with paranormals and then dived into contemporary. First erotica I read was a Lauren Dane book but I can’t honestly remember if it was one of her Trinity or a Chase novels. It was hot and I couldn’t stop after that. Love to live in smut heaven. *grin*

JoJo (The Cornered Lover): My very first *snickers* smutty book was Book #2 Lover Eternal in J.R. Ward’s series The Black Dagger Brotherhood. I was searching around my store looking for something good to read that involved vampires and romance, and then something caught my eye. So I picked it up and read the back and thought ” hmmmmmm….. this sounds like it could be interesting” So I bought it, took it home, and opened it up……………

Later that afternoon I finally came up for air, and thought O.M.G. I have entered a world of porn on paper! LOL Rhages story in my opinion probably has the most Smuttiness in it, and I LOVED IT! So the next day after I finished the ENTIRE book, I went back to the store and bought the entire rest of the series! minus Lover Avenged, and Lover Mine, as they were not out yet. But ever since I have been hooked and I cannot stop myself from drowning in more and more smuttiness everyday!

Veronica (The Sexy Lover): To tell you the truth, I can’t really remember my first smutty book, lol. The one I do remember first reading was a historical one. A two part book about a young woman in love with a poor man who was wrongly convicted for a crime he didn’t commit. He later reunites with her.

A bit part of the book: The hero is taking a bath in the river where the heroine is completely in awe of his body. The hero says something in the lines of apologizing for not being presentable for her. The heroine walks up to him and begins stripping of her clothes as she says something like she is the one who should be one apologizing.

Well something along those lines/quotes were said. And of course that is where the smut occurs… It was sexy hot and I didn’t even mind it being a historical romance novel.  It didn’t put me off yet this book made me want to read more smutty novels.

And do you remember your first sensual/smutty book? Did someone recommend it to you or did you pick it up by chance? Did you like it immediately or did it put you off of erotica/steamy romance novels for a while?

And if you are still waiting to read your first sexy/smutty novel,  no worries, you can count on us to initiate you.

So if you are curious where to begin, or are always up for great new smutty reads, come back next week for our recommendation post! Until then, happy smutty reading to all of you! ;-p

Wow, some great first time smut reads. I think mine was the Kama Sutra. My parents had a copy, I found it and scratched my head at the pictures. I was probably 16 at the time. Does this count as a book? lol

Wow – talk about bringing back memories. My first smutty was Sweet Savage Love, followed closely by either The Flame and the Flower or The Wolf and the Dove (both by Woodiwiss). Went thru more by both Rogers and Woodiwiss, everythinhg by Jean Auel, then graduated to Anne Rice, Laurell Hamilton, and the rest of those wonderful paranormal romances. Good stuff!!

I do read smutty books but I can't remember which book was my first. I've been thinking and thinking and can't remember at all.

  • Penny October 3, 2010 at 11:42 am

My first romance novels were Harlequin Presents by Carole Mortimer, Charlotte Lamb and Penny Jordan; oh how I loved those books! Forever is, still to this day, one of my favorite books EVER! Its still on my bookshelf! BUT, my first truly smutty book was Goodbye, Janette by Harold Robbins. THAT book….oh my goodness! I picked it up off of my parent's bookshelf, not at all expecting it to be what it was. It had a WHOLE bunch of stuff in it that I had NO business reading when I was 12 or 13 years old; drug use, rape, male on male scenes, cross dressing, whips…..it was WILD stuff for my mind! It didn't scare me away, though! LOL

Great post! I just discussed it with my mom and sisters. Between us, we've read almost all of the authors mentioned here! 🙂

    Great kick-off question!

My first eye-opening smutty read was Diana Gabaldon's 'Outlander'. I was 17 and didn't know what I was in store for when I opened that mammoth book… it's quite literary and beautiful, all about the Highlands, time travel and then *HELLO JAMIE!* followed by lots of Jamie/Claire bedroom antics that grew more and more detailed and explicit.

I loved it. And to this day I think Diana Gabaldon writes some of the smuttiest smut out there. Really sensual, gorgeous prose but ultimately good and smutty.

And I loved that people saw me reading that 600+ page book with a gold-embossed front cover and they thought I was some high-brow literati when in actuality I just wanted more of Claire and Jamie getting it on… lol
