Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

Google is preparing the release of its UK version of Google Editions and has talked to several UK publishers to publish their books on this platform. Google has stated it would be working with the Agency model but whether this would be brought on board in the UK remains to be seen especially since Hachette is currently the only publisher that has signed up to this model.

More ebook news:

During last week’s Book Fair in Franfurt, many publishers have stated that ebooks are increasingly becoming more popular and that once a reader has bought a reader they are probably ‘lost’ to print. Sale of Rights to work and Geo restrictions was also raised and Google’s Tom Turvey also

“asked whether gathering in one location to sell “geographic rights” would continue in the future. All of the panelists said that changes were surely on the horizon, but Schnittman and Murray were quick to point out that it was language rights, not geographic rights, that were traded, suggesting the kind of personal exchanges fostered by the rights center had a future.”

It does look like that ebooks and the repercussions of their popularity is starting to make an even bigger impact to major publishers and huge changes seem to be on the horizon.

Author News:

Congrats to Nalini’s move to Hardcover!
Nalini Singh has stated at her blog that her next Psy/Changeling book Kiss of Snow which will be published after the upcoming Play of Passion, will be in Hardback and its release will be brought forward to June. However the paperback will be release 6 months later so there wont be a lengthy wait for the book. An ebook version will also be out at the same time as the Hardback as well, Nalini also confirmed that Kiss of Snow, Hawke’s book will also be much longer!

Suvudu has posted the cover for the final book in Jacqueline Carey’s latest trilogy, Naamah’s Blessing.

And finally Larissa Ione has announced that her super sekret project that she was working on was an expanding on a short story from the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance book 2. The expanded short story, Eternity Embraced, will be available via Amazon Kindle and the Nook and will feature the yummilicious Kaden and Andrea! Larissa hopes to release the story in November.

Jaci Burton also revealed the cover of Changing the Game, her second novel in her Play by Play series. As it seems she know where the cover goddess lives and offers her cookies. Changing the Game will be out in September 2011.
What do you think: will geo restrictions for ebooks stay to anger us all or is there hope on the horizon?

What do you think about switching from paperback to hardback in a series?

RE: E books, Geo restriction is the ONLY reason why I have not purchased an ereader, it honestly drives me batsh*t. cue to eye roll, swearing, beating on chest(oww!)
I'm a cup half full kinda girl so I have hope………
P.S if my fav author is bringing out H/C I will buy them, regardless if it screws with the rest of my collection. I am kinda in love with my bookcase/s. I really love the fact they are not uniform, I just stick the authors in order and thats pretty much as disciplined as I get.*shrug* I'm not sure I could handle looking at a book case and have every book the same size ect,ect..

Regarding the ebooks, I hate that here (in Germany) I can't have the full variety of ebook readers to choose from. And I think the book sellers here don't really promote ebooks, yet. I only know a few people who really read ebooks. But I hope that's going to change soon!

Oh, and the new Jaci Burton cover…wow…only wow *fans self*! That just made my day! Now I'm a happy girl for the rest of the day, just thinking of that cover! 🙂 And I don't think she only offers cookies to the cover goddess, there must be something else she is giving to her. And I'd really like to know what it is!

Grrr, I despise hardcover. To me, hardcover just means unnecessarily jacking up the costs of my precious books while simultaneously taking away precious bookshelf real estate. I don't care how much I love the author or the series, I will not buy hardcover. Trade paperback? Yes. Love trade paperbacks. But no hardcovers!

@Anonymous Yes I totally agree but I have to admit I still couldn't resist the ereader temptation. Now I try not to go ballistic when someone tells me I'm not allowed to read a book. And I hate when books don't fit in my bookshelf. I have a Nora Roberts' Bride Quartet in three different sizes. That'S one for each book so far. Don't like that at all. LOL

@ClaudiGC I totally agree. I hate that we can't get all the readers here in Germany. And even more that they are soooo expensive. I was so lucky to get my Sony for 99€. And yes I love Jaci's covers. But The Perfect play is still my favorite. That one totally fries my brain everytime I see it.

@draconismoi And yes girl. So true. I don't like hardcover at all either. It'S way too expensive and I don't like to read those either. too uncomfortable for my taste. And so late in a series it just angers me. I don't want to buy the book twice and that'S what will happen cuz I won't buy the HC so I will get the ebook when it'S out and buy the paperback to sit besides the rest in my bookshelf. Me not happy at all. =(

If I have the first book in the series in hardcover I feel like I have to get the rest of the books in hardcover so that they all match and look nice on the bookshelf.
