We’re breaking our current topic mode for a country fight. Today we will try to find our favorite French or German covers and you guys can vote in the comments who’s selection you like best. We had this fight…ahem… discussion for quite some time now and we think we finally need to proclaim a winner.
So please help us and tell us what you think about our selection.
Added after writing the post: we are really sorry but it seems we couldn’t keep it short. At the end you can find cookies so stay tuned.

Caroline’s selection of French covers:

Caroline: When we decided on today’s theme, I was pretty happy I thought ‘yay now I can show some kick-ass French covers’ *cough*and-win-over-Susi*cough*…ah! Then I searched a bit and realized not many French covers are really worth mentioning. 😉 But here is my pick!
Démon Intérieur (The Demon Inside) is one of my favorite UF French covers. I find it very sexy. The atmosphere is mysterious with the mist, the colors are great with the play of lights. Oh and that man…nom nom nom. Seriously I like everything about it. I live it WAY more than the US cover. The whole series in French has great covers.

Pleine Lune (Full Moon Rising) is simpler but it’s the details that make it great. I love the fangs subtly peeking from her mouth. I LOVE how he is staring at us. I even like that it’s blue! with the full moon rising in the background. *g* Simple but pretty.

L’éclat Envoutant de la Lune (Seduced by Moonlight) is HOT! I love that her face is half hidden in the shadows and by the veil. I find the model very sexy, with the bra showing up a little. It’s sexy without being too much…which is always a problem with these kinds of covers. Oh and I really like the thingy around the title.
I couldn’t NOT post a few Historical covers. French historical covers are often either very cheesy, or very ‘romantic’. These two are among my favorite:

Sous L’Emprise du Désir (Suddenly You) is both delicate and sensual. I love her clothes and the pretty necklace. The only thing is that I don’t really see the link with the book, but who cares! lol

Apprends-moi à Aimer (Not Quite a Lady) is one of those covers that I can’t help look at, every time I see it in the store. I love it to pieces. This is one of those ‘romantic’ covers I told you about.
Susi: First thing I have to say is I love the way French titles sound and I love accents. Weird I know but I don’t care.
I completely agree about Démon Intérieur– this is totally hot- me wants!

Pleine Lune– meh. Too blue and looks too much like the German BDB covers. I don’t like these bats at all. And his eyes are kind of freaky.

L’éclat Envoutant de la Lune– Gorgeous cover but I don’t like the veil she has on her head but I still like it. Nice!

Sous L’Emprise du Désir– I actually like this cover but the first think that comes to my mind is: “OMG her boobs gonna fall out.” Sorry I just couldn’t hold that back.
Apprends-moi à Aimer– this is a really pretty cover and it is very different from all the historical covers we have here in Germany. The rose is too huge but the rest is perfect.
Caroline: Her boobs gonna fall!!!! You dare! LMAO

Susi’s selection of German covers:

Susi: As you can see I actually seem to like different kind of covers. The first cover Höllenritt (Hellride) is German cover of Lilith Saintcrow’s Dead Man Rising, book 2 in her Dante Valentine series. I really like the US covers but this cover is just wonderful. I love the vibrant orange and the font is wonderful. The circle around it looks even better in real life. This is actually one book I would love to have in my collection. But I already have them in English so we will see. Perhaps one day when I’m filthy rich. *dreams*
The second cover is the debut novel of the German author Gesa Schwartz. Grim- Das Siegel des Feuers (Grim- The Seal of Fire) is labels as Fantasy and Young Adult. I haven’t read it so I can’t tell you much about the book besides that it is about a gargoyle named Grim. I like the way he poses on this house. His wings are magnificent and his fingers look like claws. I love that they put so much detail in it. I also like the swirling fire in the background. And the font is wonderful.
Next is the German cover of Black & White by Jackie Kessler and Caitlin Kittredge. Schatten und Licht (Shadow and Light) is so much prettier than the original one. I love the colors and arrangement. This covers really makes me think comic. I’m already planning to give this one away as a bday gift. The thing I don’t get is why her eyes are yellow. *shrugs*
The next cover is from one of my all time favorite author Sergej Lukianenko (I think in English his name is written differently). His novel Die Ritter der 40 Inseln (The Knights of the 40 Islands) is a Young Adult Novel. I love how his hair falls into his face and the way he looks is just breathtaking. On top of his face are those scratches that give the cover a more used touched. Like an old picture you carried around in your jacket. Totally fits the sepia style too. One of the things I like most about Sergej Lukianenko’s German books is that they always have a similiar style- makes them look great in my bookshelf (a bit like the old Terry Pratchett books- you the ones where you already know from afar that is a Pratchett).
The last one is the German cover of Ilona Andrews’ On The Edge. Land der Schatten- Magische Begegnung (Land of Shadows- Magic Encounter). I usually never like blue covers but this one really is cute. I’m not sure if it really fits the book, I think it should be more fun then and totally have Declan on the cover. I love how the magic flows out of her fingertips and the swirly things are just pretty. Okay the hand on the top of her head is a bit weird. Is it her own? Or is someone petting her head and if the latter why? Yep, probably only me thinking about that.

Caroline: Don’t hurt me hon, but I don’t like the Lilith Saintcrow much. It’s a bit too full. And I’ve never been a fan of negative effect pics. It’s not bad, but just Mehh.

I really like the cover of Gesa Schwartz. Grim, I agree about how his wings are fantastic. And look look he’s in Paris 🙂 And well I’m pretty partial to Orange *g*.

Schatten und Licht is wow! I love the comic feel. I love the huge green title. This is a very pretty cover. It’s my favorite of the 5.

Die Ritter der 40 Inseln is nice but I’m thinking you have to know the book or see it in real to appreciate it. It’s not bad, but It wouldn’t have caught my eyes.

Ilona Andrew’s book is very pretty! It doesn’t fit the book at all but it’s pretty lol. And OMG LMAO now I see the hand petting her head. (and too think you mocked me and my ‘Dirty’ glasses last time <_<)

Susi: But this cover actually has a hand!!! LOL

Caroline: Why is there a hand on her HEAD?!!! Seriously.

Susi: I have no idea! But it is!

Are you more French or German at (cover) heart?
Which cover is your personal favorite?

Overall I like the German covers better. The French are too sugary for my taste.
I do have to confess (and risk being clobbered) that I think the wings of that gargoyle look ridiculous.

  • pattepoilue October 11, 2010 at 11:54 am

@Sullivan McPig Oh you don't like the wing? lol They look exactly like the wings on the Gargoyles of the Cathedral of my College city, I think that's why I really like them. 😉

  • Michelle Greathouse October 11, 2010 at 12:07 pm

I think the French covers are prettier – but the German covers are hard core. LOL I like some of each – for different reasons.

I do love it when you guys post covers from different countries. 🙂

@Pattepoilue: I think I'm looking at them too much with an 'can you actually fly with those?' attitude and I can tell you he'll have some serious problems if he tries :-p

  • SusiSunshine October 11, 2010 at 12:11 pm

@Sullivan McPig Yep I agree sugary is the right word. And I never thought about those wings in any aerodynamic way. LOL

@Michelle Oh yep..the French ones seem to be more emotion centered. Me likes kick-ass more. 😉

  • pattepoilue October 11, 2010 at 12:12 pm

@Michelle Yay! Someone who agrees with me about the French covers *g*. I love posting foreign covers!!

The German covers are definitely superior. Even my least favorite is better than the French ones. They have way more style.

  • pattepoilue October 11, 2010 at 2:22 pm

@draconismoi What did you say? I can't hear you. Lol *innocent whistling*

  • Sharon S. October 11, 2010 at 2:40 pm

must go German. They are darker and edgier. I prefer that.
Schatten und Licht is smexy 😉

  • pattepoilue October 11, 2010 at 2:49 pm

@Sharon S. Alright next time I'll bring the darkest French covers I can find LOL Ahhhh I can already hear Susi laughing from giddiness at this victory. lol I must find troops to defend the French covers…*retreat to plot counterattack*

  • SusiSunshine October 11, 2010 at 3:17 pm

    @draconismoi Woooot. Thank you!

@Sharon S. Yay..and yes I love that one. The publisher is currently acquiring the rights of so many great books. I can't wait to see with what else they come up.

@pattepoilue Muahahahah! See the cookies are helping. *wicked grin*

Ladies, before starting reading this post I had an answer in my mind (though I LOVE everything French, so far I've been pretty disappointed with French covers German paranormal/UF covers on the other hand tend to look great!), but then, have to admit I prefer most of the covers Caro picked over those of Susi (don't hurt me Susi, please!!)

From the German covers I only like Grim (though I agree with Sully, those wings look too big, disproportionate to the body) and the Ilona Andrews one (haven't read it yet, so have no idea if it suits the book), but a bit interesting that based on the German cover I would expect the novel to be about fairies 🙂

Except the Lisa Kleypas cover (her boobs are definitely falling out!!), I like them all. The Merry one looks so sophisticated and yet exciting!

So this time I vote for French covers 😉

  • pattepoilue October 12, 2010 at 5:39 am

@Stella *squeeeee* YAY someone on my side! Wooooot wooot *opens Champagne*
Ah Stella the Ilona books is NOT about fairies lol See how it's not appropriate for this book? lol
Alright, maybe her boobs are falling a little! But hey, she's not 20 anymore LOL

  • LSUReader October 12, 2010 at 3:01 pm

Gotta vote French. The German covers really don't appeal to me at all.

  • pattepoilue October 12, 2010 at 3:03 pm

@LSUReader *g* Thanks!! now I can tell Susi…. Neener Neener! *stick tongue's out* *wait for reaction* *runs for cover*

  • SusiSunshine October 13, 2010 at 4:17 pm

@Stella Pah…but at least you agree about the boobs. LOL

    @LSUReader =(

    @pattepoilue *sticks tongue out too*
