Interview: Authors Moira Rogers (Bree+Donna) + Giveaway

Filed in Giveaways , Interview , Moira Rogers , The Geeky Lover Posted on October 15, 2010 @ 6:00 am 21 comments
Today we decided to double the fun! We’re happy to welcome the author duo known as Moira Rogers on Book Lovers Inc. The 2nd book in the Building Sanctuary series, Undertow was released earlier this month. If you think you’ve read everything about werewolves you will be surprised. Let’s give a warm welcome to Moira Rogers. Stay tuned and you could win one of their books.

The Geeky Lover: Everyone who ever visited your website knows that Moira Rogers is a deception and you are actual two woman writing together under this pen name. So Bree and Donna, can you please tell us a bit about yourself?
Donna: Well, I’m pretty uncomplicated–or am I? I’ve studied nursing and forensic science. I have one husband, two kids, and three cats. If I don’t have anything else to read, I resort to the back of the cereal box.  And I love plotting perfect romances and perfect murders, in that order.
Bree: I’m just a geeky girl married to a geeky guy. I spent years and years (and lots of money) getting a degree in Computer Science, then decided I’d rather write about werewolves in love. I’m sure there’s a logical middle step in there somewhere, and someday I’m going to discover it.
The Geeky Lover: Why did you two decide to write books together as a team? And how does it work? Are you emailing each other or are you more the instant messaging kinda girls?
Donna: Email, definitely. IM is too distracting, not to mention a little weird when we start writing the naughty stuff! LOL I think we started writing together because we kept plotting together, and we always loved each other’s ideas.
Bree: Yep. We would be on a roll, building on each other’s ideas, but when we went to separate corners to write–well. That didn’t work. So one day we decided to start writing together, and it turns out we really, really enjoy it.
The Geeky Lover: Describe a typical day of writing? Are you two more a planner or pantser?
Donna: Oh man, if we don’t plot, we don’t get anything done. We have to do it in order to make sure we’re on the same page when it comes to plot and character development.
Bree: And the only thing typical about our days is that they last 10-12 hours. We don’t write very fast, but you know what they say about slow and steady? It’s really true. We write in between caring for ourselves and our families and abusing twitter and trying to keep on top of our admin work and inboxes.
The Geeky Lover: What do you think is the difference between a reader and a real Book Lover?
Donna: I think it’s the cereal box thing I mentioned. Will you read ANYTHING, just to have something to read? LOL
Bree: Yep. If panic sets in when your TBR pile gets too small, or at the thought of being trapped without reading material to hand? You’re a book lover.
The Geeky Lover: Your Building Sanctuary Series is a prequel to your Red Rock Pass books. Why did you decide to start a new series set before those novels?
Bree: While we were working on Sanctuary Unbound, we had to spend a lot of time thinking about how Adam got to be the way he was. We knew what events of his past had broken him, but the more we considered the details, the more we wanted to write about the wild adventure of that time.
Donna: And that’s one great thing about working with our editor at Samhain. When we approached her with the idea of writing a paranormal historical set in an unusual time period, she encouraged us rather than staring silently at us like we’d lost our minds.
The Geeky Lover: For everyone who’s new to your writing, could you tell us a bit about your world and what makes it special?
Bree: Oh man, I’m never good at answering this question! The only answer I really have is: I love it so hard, I hope a little bit of that love shows on the page, and in the characters.
Donna: I think there are things about the Sanctuary universe–in all time periods–that are familiar and yet a little bit different. It’s like…all the elements a reader might expect in werewolf romance, but Bree and I love nothing more than to throw those elements together in ways you might NOT expect. 😀
The Geeky Lover: Can you tell us a bit about your new book Undertow?
Bree: Am I allowed to quote my editor? She said it best when she said this: “Undertow is intense romance. It’s also werewolves in depression-era east-coast US, a cabin romance, an island romance, some magic and the sequel to A Safe Harbor.” (http://editorannescott.wordpress.com/2010/10/05/undertow/)
Donna: I love Victor. That’s all. He’s an ass, and I love him.
The Geeky Lover: Victor and Simone are really different from each other. If you had to describe both of them in three words each which would they be? [and yes you get 6 because you are 2 authors ;)]
Bree: Let’s see. Victor: intense, taciturn, worried. Simone: warm, stubborn, hopeful.
Donna: Hahaha. Simone–“Are you okay?” Victor–“Stop asking that.”
The Geeky Lover: Will there be more books in this series? Will Rose get her own book and will we get the chance to read Gavin’s & Sam’s story?
Bree: If we have our way, Rose’s story will be told. 😉
Donna: Gavin and Sam already have, in a way, had their story told. The prequel Becoming, available as a free read on our website, tells the story of how Sam wound up in Red Rock, under the care of their young alpha. (You can find it here: http://www.moirarogers.com/red-rock-freebies)
The Geeky Lover: Which 4 characteristics should a perfect hero have in your opinion?
Bree: You know, there are some things I love: brains, brawn and a sense of humor. But the one thing I need in every hero is absolute faith in the fact that he wants the heroine’s health and happiness more than anything else.  That’s my perfect hero.
Donna: Self-awareness, intelligence, compassion, and a really nice chest.
The Geeky Lover: What is next on your schedule?
Bree: We have a post-apocalyptic paranormal romance out in December with Carina Press, and then we’re getting excited about the third novel in our Southern Arcana series, Deadlock!
The Geeky Lover: Now can you tell us 3 reasons why people should read your books?
Bree: Oh dear. You really want me to promote myself, don’t you! Curses! I’m going to have to go with… the covers are pretty! (No, that’s not cheating.) Also, if you like spooky creatures, naughty antics and crazy adventures, we’ve got them. And hopefully they’re at least half as entertaining to read as they are to write!
Donna: 1) I think they’re fun. 2) I think our heroes are hot. 3) If you pick up one and it doesn’t grab you, chances are excellent that we’ve dabbled in a genre you might enjoy more. LOL
The Geeky Lover: We know that at least Bree loves to write the typical Samhain warnings at the end of a Blurb. So here’s a challenge for you two: If you were a Samhain book what would your warning say?

Warning: these authors suffer a terminal addiction to Pepsi Max, twitter, and violent men with big guns and bigger hearts. Do not combine with spiders or lizards. Authors not responsible for side-effects when mixed with DayQuil or NyQuil.

The Geeky Lover: Can you summarize your book (and/or series?) twitter style (140 characters or less)?
Bree:
Building Sanctuary:

Werewolf bootleggers + impressionable young ladies + lonely island = happily ever afters, in spite of dark times. 1930s Paranormal Romance.

Undertow:

She’s ready to save their future. He’s trying to fix her past. Even a badass werewolf bootlegger can’t resist her come-hither smile forever.

(That’s right. They’re both exactly 140 characters! Bree’s a show-off.)
Donna: I can’t do better than that. Mine would be, like,

“YAY SIMONE & JOAN! AND VICTOR & SEAMUS ARE HAWT!”

The Geeky Lover: Thanks so much for taking the time to answer our questions.

You guys popped up on myPNR/UF radar recently and I can't wait to try your books 🙂 I too, will read a cereal box if there is nothing else around. That is why my kindle is so important to me. I can have a book in 30 seconds if needed. Do you guys own e-readers?

  • Moira Rogers - Bree October 15, 2010 at 7:49 am

    Hi Sharon!

We both own kindles. I have a kindle 1, my husband & Donna both have kindle 2s. Though I do a surprising amount of reading on my android phone these days, and I read my kindle books on my various computers or wherever I happen to be when the need to read strikes. (I love that they sync my devices so I can just pick up where I left off!)
