We are very happy to welcome author Jackie Morse Kessler to Book Lovers Inc today. Her debut novel in the Young Adult Genre Hunger was released yesterday. It’S the first book in Her Horsemen of the Apocalypse series and definitely isn’t your typical YA book. Please give her a warm  welcome. And please be sure to stay tuned till the end…I’ve got a little surprise for you.

The Geeky Lover: Jackie, can you please tell us a bit about yourself?

Jackie: As Jackie Morse Kessler, I write about the occasional Horseman of the Apocalypse. HUNGER is my first book for teens (thus the pseudo-secret identity of “Jackie Morse Kessler” instead of just “Jackie Kessler,” under which I write adult urban fantasy.) On a more personal note, I’m five feet tall (on a tall day) and a Sagittarius with a weakness for chocolate. I’m married with two young kids, one very old cat, and a house in upstate New York.

The Geeky Lover: If you weren’t a writer, what would you love to do?

Jackie: Not a writer? I’m afraid I don’t understand the question. 🙂

The Geeky Lover: Which Young Adult novels you read had the most impact on your life?

Jackie: Laurie Halse Anderson’s SPEAK and John Green’s LOOKING FOR ALASKA showed me just how powerful YA novels could be. Ellen Hopkin’s IMPACT showed me just how creative the written word could be. And Holly Black’s TITHE showed me that we don’t need to pull our punches just because the audience is not adult.

The Geeky Lover: Why did you decide to start writing Young Adult novels? What is their appeal in your opinion?

Jackie: I didn’t set out to write a YA novel; HUNGER turned out that way. That being said, I think YA is a fabulous category, one that wasn’t around when I was a teen—books basically went from children’s (middle grade) right to adult. It’s terrific that there are so many books centered around teenage protagonists who go through things that teens relate to personally.

The Geeky Lover: On your website I discovered your Post Mortem page. It’s a online “radio” show where death interviews the fictional character of other authors. How did you come up with that idea? (And the man on the pic: is that Kurt Cobain?)

Jackie: On my other website I have a segment called Cat and Muse in which the demon protagonist of my first series, Hell on Earth, interviews the characters of other authors. I came up with that idea way back in 2006. So it seemed like a good idea to do a similar segment on the JMK site, where Death (who, yes, looks exactly like Kurt Cobain in my books) interviews the characters of other YA authors.

The Geeky Lover: Your new series combines the life of young adults with the tale of the horsemen of the apocalypse. Tell us a bit more about the world your books are set in.

Jackie:  The books are much less about the Horsemen and much more about the issue that the teen protagonists face. In HUNGER, that issue is eating disorders; in RAGE, the issues are self-injury and bullying. The books are closer to magical realism than to urban fantasy or dark fantasy. Ultimately, the Horsemen symbolize how we choose to destroy ourselves…and how we can save ourselves as well.

The Geeky Lover: What can we expect of HUNGER?

Jackie: The book takes a hard-hitting look at eating disorders. It doesn’t pull any punches; some of the scenes are graphic. But I felt strongly that it was important for people to really understand what anorexics and bulimics go through every day. It’s not an easy story. But it is an honest one. And, ultimately, a positive one.

The Geeky Lover: Your heroine Lisabeth is suffering from anorexia and her new “job” is to be the Famine part of the Apocalyptic Horsemen. Tell us a bit about her?

Jackie:  Lisa is seventeen, and she’s convinced that she’s fat. She thinks that if she can get to the perfect weight, everything will finally be okay. She doesn’t see how she’s pushing away the ones who care about her. And she definitely doesn’t see the harm she’s doing to herself. All she knows is she’s bitterly unhappy. The book opens with her interrupted suicide attempt. (Death comes knocking. Er, ringing.)

The Geeky Lover: Anorexia is a big problem in today’s beauty orientated society. What do you think young women can learn from your story?

Jackie:  It’s not about being thin. It’s about being healthy. None of us is perfect; even super models get Photoshopped. Be proud of yourself for who you are instead of hating yourself for what you’re not. And no matter what, you are not alone.

The Geeky Lover: Which Horsemen will be the next focus in the second book in your series and can you tell us a bit about it?

Jackie: The next book, RAGE, is War’s book. A teen girl self-injurer becomes the new avatar of War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The Geeky Lover: What is next on your schedule? Anything else we should keep our eyes open for?

Jackie:  I’m currently writing LOSS, the third book in The Riders’ Quartet. Meanwhile, on the adult end of things, I have Hell short stories in THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF PARANORMAL ROMANCE 2, THOSE WHO FIGHT MONSTERS, and AFTER HOURS: TALES FROM THE UR-BAR. And I’m serializing the fourth Hell novel, HELL TO PAY, on my JK website until the end of 2010.

The Geeky Lover: The mean questions: (<===because we love to torture our guests *wink*)

Jackie:  Yikes!

The Geeky Lover: Can you summarize your book (and/or series?) twitter style (140 characters or less)?

Jackie:  Sure.

Hunger: An anorexic teenage girl becomes the new Famine, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The Geeky Lover: Now can you tell us 3 reasons why people should read your books?

Jackie:
1. I’m donating a portion of proceeds to the National Eating Disorders Association, so if you buy the book, you help make a difference.
2. The more people understand eating disorders, the more we can help support those who are suffering with eating disorders.

3. Death sings. Who’d want to miss that?

The Geeky Lover: If you were forced to only read books by ONE author for the rest of your life who’s books would it be?

Jackie: So cruel! But it would have to be my god of writing, Neil Gaiman.

The Geeky Lover: Thanks so much for taking the time to answer our questions.

Jackie:  Thank you!

'Hunger' sounds amazing! And incredible too, that you've tackled some very important issues in today's world. My question for you, Jackie, is…
    What inspires you to write?

I read HUNGER (thanks to Netgalley) and loved it – only took me a couple of hours!-.

It was so intense and well written, that I want to have a copy on my bookshelf. I could relate to Lisa, even when I haven't suffered of eating disorders.

Can't wait to read RAGE 😀

Hello Jackie! You have done a brilliant job with Hunger! It's an important book. I've read and reviewed it thanks to NetGalley and can't wait to read the next books, Rage and Loss! I would love to have a copy.

What a unique take on the 4 horseman. My teenage daughter did a paper on eating disorders and I think she would enjoy this book (after I read it of course ). I am a Gaiman fan too!

  • Sam Tomi October 20, 2010 at 8:36 am

    Hi Jackie

I didn't know that Hunger was a YA book.
My Question is : Would you be switching to the YA genre or are you gonna do both?

    Nice Interview btw. 🙂

    Hi Jackie!

Question: would you say the series has got some kind of a religious tone/message? Of course I'm only asking this because of Apocalyptic Horsemen – a theme I admit I know very little about, and that in my ignorance, I immediately connect with the Bible.

By the way, these covers are beyond awesome 😀

  • Jackie October 20, 2010 at 9:16 am

Wow — great comments and questions!

@SmashAttack, thank you for recommending HUNGER! And yes, Neil Gaiman is **fabulous**.

@Suzy Turner asked "What inspires you to write?" The answer is, I have to write. I have all these stories in my head, and I have to get the words out. When I don't write, I get itchy. I have to write. Now, it's not always easy to find the time. But I do the best that I can. And when there's a deadline, it's amazing how much I can accomplish! 😉

@RKCharron, thanks so much! You asked, "Will Hell To Pay be available in print version?" The answer is, Most likely. 🙂 After the serial is complete, I'll look into doing an e-book version for the Kindle. As long as it doesn't give me more gray hair, that's the way I'll go. I'll look into this further in November. 🙂

@PinkStuff28, Hi there! You asked, "Have you read any banned books besides [Speak]?" I'm sure I have; because I've been out of school for many (many) years, I buy from bookstores, so I tend not to know whether something has been banned in school until after the fact. When I was a student, the perennial banned book was HUCKLEBERRY FINN, which I've read many times.

There is never a good reason to ban books. SPEAK LOUDLY against book banning!

    this looks pretty cool,

    to list it up

    there's

    anaroxia,girl,fantasy,apocalypse,

I like how you somehow joined aneroxia with the apocalypse,

    my question is

what inspired you to write about this?

    [I'm guessing it's Laurie's book?]

    regards,

  • debbie October 20, 2010 at 9:30 am

I think it is a very good way to introduce this topic, as a discussion. I am quite concerned about it. Since I think friends are very important, what would you say to someone, who suspects their friend might have an eating disorder?

@GABY – Thank you for reading HUNGER (and for loving it)! I hope you enjoy RAGE too.

@Kulsuma, thank you so much! **blushes a mighty crimson** I hope you enjoy RAGE and LOSS. (My agent just got back to me today on the beginning of LOSS — she likes it! Hooray!)

@Sharon S, hooray for Gaiman fans! I hope you and your daughter enjoy HUNGER. Very glad to hear she did a paper on eating disorders. The more people discuss them, the more likely we can better support people who are affected by eating disorders.

@Sam Tomi, when I started writing HUNGER, I didn't know it was a YA book either! 🙂 You asked, "Would you be switching to the YA genre or are you gonna do both?" I have more adult short stories coming out in 2011, as well as RAGE and possibly LOSS (although that may be 2012). As for what happens with my adult career after that…I'm not sure. I'm really enjoying YA right now. We'll see! And I'm glad you enjoyed the interview.

@jen7waters, I love the covers too! You asked, "Question: would you say the series has got some kind of a religious tone/message? Of course I'm only asking this because of Apocalyptic Horsemen – a theme I admit I know very little about, and that in my ignorance, I immediately connect with the Bible."

First, you're not ignorant at all! The Four Horsemen are straight from the Book of Revelation. Everything in pop culture about the Four Horsemen stems from that. So you're right on the money where the Horsemen originate.

As for religious messages in HUNGER, the Biblical passages were a springboard, certainly. But that's as far as any religious message goes. The theme of the Horseman books is how we choose to destroy ourselves…and how we can save ourselves as well. Perhaps that's a religious message — I don't know. But I hope it's a positive one. This is the reason why I'm donating a portion of proceeds for the four books to specific charities. We can save ourselves. We can choose to do good. (Oh my gosh, I just got up on a soapbox! Sorry about that!) **steps off of soapbox**

Boy, I hope I answered the question. 🙂

    chidoryx AT hotmail DOT com

  • Jackie October 20, 2010 at 2:15 pm

@FairyWhispers asked, "What inspired you to write this book?"

I wanted to write it for a long, long time. The idea itself comes from many places – including comic books (Marvel and Archie comics), terrific fantasy novels (including works by Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett and Piers Anthony), and the impossible ideal of beauty (reinforced whenever a supermodel gets Photoshopped). I was bulimic when I was younger, and I still have body image issues, and it was very important to me that I write something that tackled eating disorders.

@debbie asked, "What would you say to someone, who suspects their friend might have an eating disorder?"

Most important, tell them they're right to be concerned. Eating disorders are serious, and they can be deadly.

Tell them that millions of people suffer with eating disorders, either because they themselves have the disease or someone they love does. They are not alone — and they can get help.

Tell them the National Eating Disorders Association is a nonprofit group that gives people information and resources to help people with eating disorders get the support they need.

Tell them it's not about being thin. It's about being healthy.

    **hugs**

I like when mythology plays a roll in books set in modern times. I guess it stems back to my love of fairy tales–the dark creepy ones like by the Brothers Grimm. Of course I still absolutely LOOOOVE Disney movies too. I'm very unique! 😉

Sounds like a very interesting and intriguing read that addresses an important issue since the teen is anorexic.

Jackie, what's the best thing about being an author for you?

  • Jackie October 20, 2010 at 8:27 pm

@Giada M asked, "Have you ever kept a dream journal for inspiration? If yes, is it useful?"

I've tried. Many times. But I always give up journaling after a few entries. I guess I have too much going on in my head to get it down in a journal!

@Jessica – thanks so much for your comment! From Grimm to Disney, and everything in between. 🙂

@donnas asked, "Was it hard to switch from the adult genre to the YA one? And how did you know that was going to be the right genre for this story."

I actually didn't set out to write a YA novel; the protagonist wound up being 17, so there you go. I think it's less about writing to the audience than it is writing what's organic to the story: things happen to a 17 year old that don't happen to a 27 year old, and vice versa. Some of that means tapping into memories and experiences, but most of it is just trying to have the protagonist do what you feel is right. **whew** Did I answer the question? 🙂

@April X asked, "If you could co write a book with any author, who would it be?"

NEIL GAIMAN. I'd be happy to write only the little words, like "the" and "it." **fans self**

  • Jackie October 20, 2010 at 8:37 pm

@ninefly said, "I love how you title each book, not just naming it after the Horseman. Loss should be about Death I'm guessing? Would any of the stories cross over into each other?"

Thanks! For HUNGER and RAGE, the matching Horsemen were pretty obvious. But much less so for LOSS (Pestilence) and BREATH (Death). LOSS deals with bullying and coping with Alzheimer's. And, um, Robin Hood. (I swear, I'll make it work!) BREATH is Death's book, and the issue will be suicide. Out of all the Horsemen, Death is the only one who's the original. So that story may be, um, long. Maybe. Haven't written it yet! Still writing LOSS. And each book is a standalone story, although you may get more out of the later books if you've read the earlier ones. 🙂

@Alexa – thanks! Eating disorders affect millions of people. Millions. And global hunger is, unfortunately, a very harsh reality in many places.

@Caitlin – thanks. I felt very strongly about donating a portion of HUNGER proceeds to NEDA, and I then decided that I'd donate a portion of proceeds of each of the four books to specific charities. So if people buy the books, they're helping make a difference. 🙂

@rachel445 – Yay, short people rock! And yes, Death sings. 🙂

You asked, "What's the best thing about being an author for you?" Interacting with my readers. 🙂 That's got to be one of the coolest things ever. (That, and getting a kiss on the cheek from Neil Gaiman.)

    Hi Jackie!

I read 'Hunger' through Netgalley and I loved it. It's really beautiful! I would love to have it on my bookshelf. I can´t wait for read "Rage".

    My question:
Which character was the most enjoyed writing and what the most difficult? Why?

    Thanks for the chance =)

    Cheers!

    ~Yelania

  • Jackie October 20, 2010 at 9:54 pm

@Yelania – Thank you! I'm so thrilled you loved HUNGER. Hope you enjoy RAGE too!

You asked, "Which character was the most enjoyed writing and what the most difficult? Why?"

For HUNGER, the most difficulty I had with the characters was figuring out who the protagonist should be. Discovering her. Understanding her. Once I decided that she would very (very) loosely be based on someone I had known, everything just clicked.

With RAGE, getting to know the protagonist was the hardest part. In that book, the character fought me tooth and nail through most of the draft — which is appropriate, I guess, when the Horseman is War! But eventually, I got it, and her. And I also got War.

Now I'm working on LOSS, and again, it's getting to know the protagonist that's the most challenging. But I think I'm finally getting a handle on him. 🙂

  • sablelexi October 20, 2010 at 11:26 pm

I just wanted to congratulate you on the courage it takes to write about such a sensitive topic. "Hunger" sounds like a unique book! I haven't read any books that deal with eating disorders. Eating disorders are a very serious issue today and not many people want to address it even though many people suffer from them. I'm sure "Hunger" will bring a powerful message to teen readers and make them more aware of the impact of eating disorders.

Fantastic interview, I love the cruel questions section! What a clever idea for a series (the four horsemen of the apocolypse). Ilook forward to reading this one…

Wow, these are "difficult" subjects. I have not read HUNGER or RAGE but I imagine it must have been hard to write but I am sure it will be a big help to teens that have to cope with these issues.

    Great interview!

The book sounds really interesting and I have to say that the cover art is truly beautiful.
I think it's great to ask attention for eating disorders, and that you are trying to help these causes. These people really need professional help.

I've been wanting to read Hunger for a long while now. When I first heard about it, I thought it seemed so different and interesting. Using the idea of the four horsemen of the apocalypse to deal with issues like anorexia and self-injury is such a great idea! I never would have thought of that! Hunger and Rage sound like they have great messages!

Great interview and thanks for the giveaway. I think it's amazing that your writing about eating disorders. It's something real kids face on a daily basis and feel it's important to educate. I can't wait to read this book, sounds exciting and informative

You mentioned Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak as a novel that has influenced you. Have you read Wintergirls? It is about eating disorders, and reading the description of your book, it sounds slightly similar.
Thank you for the giveaway 🙂

I love your covers! Very eye catching! My question to you is if one book (or all of the books) of The Horsemen of the Apocalypse series was made into a movie, who would you want to play the lead role?

I have had a few people close to me go through eating disorders, so I have seen the effects. It will be interesting to see the main character face the fact that she is lucky to even have food.

I think it is a great idea to tackle these types of problems via the medium of a YA book.

I only hope it does have an effect on some young people.

Seeing the horsemen are only four, I presume you are considering a series of 4 novels. But what are your plans after that ?

    Thanks for the giveaway.

After reading Terry Pratchett/Neil Gaiman's book about the Apocalypse, I take their unique view of the Horsemen. For me, they made them more real.

Personally, I think with Stevia, the "Heronine Look" of the 90's, and all the new ways to reduce calories and fats the Horseman Famine may lose his mind.

How do you think humanities view on issues actually effects the Horsemen of the Apocalypse?

I love that Jackie is donating part of the proceeds to a cause that she cares about. I think it says a lot about a person who is willing to give back to help others. Bravo!
