Bookish Rants or Raves: I {Don’t} Feel Like It!

Filed in Bookish Rant or Raves , The Crazy Lover Posted on December 2, 2010 @ 11:00 am 11 comments

Hey everyone! Recently I have been thinking a lot about the act of reading. It looks like something so simple and innocuous, but I feel it is anything but.
As a reader I tend to give a lot of myself to any book or book series I am reading and if it doesn’t connect with me, it will be a uphill battle to get to finish it.
One of the most important aspects of reading is the mood. I can have a ton of amazing books in my TBR, but if I am not in the mood to read a certain genre, I will avoid it as much as I can.
Take YA for example. For the last few months I haven’t been able to feel almost any excitement about YA novels and have only been able to read a couple. I don’t know what’s going on, but that’s how I have felt.
I usually try a completely different genre when i find one that starts to grate on me. If the Paranormal starts getting annoying, i go right into some Contemporary Romance. If Erotica starts getting on my nerves, why not try our some Sci-fi or Steampunk LOL.

How about you guys?

Do you get moods when it comes to reading? How do you deal with it?

Can’t wait to hear what you all have to say!

I'm kind of the same way. I read across genres, especially if I get bored with one. I also look for different takes on the same genre. For example, I'm currently on a third-person, male point-of-view hunt in YA. There aren't many out there. I like to read books where authors take new chances with their writing/storylines.

Oh yes, I can def get into — or out of — a reading mood especially if I'm sort of 'hating' a specific genre. I either switch it up or revisit an old favorite — that usually gets me in the mood again. I find if I read a spate of ho-hum books, that actually leaves me v picky about what to pick up next!

I read multiple genres. Sometimes I don’t feel like reading a particular type of book, so I move on. The important thing for me is I NEVER DON’T WANT TO READ! No matter what kind of mood I’m in, if I have time to read, I know I’ll find a book that I can get lost in. Thanks for your column.

Great post! I tend to do the same thing haha. I try not to stick to just one genre because I've noticed alot of them start having the same basic story-lines and from time to time I need a break from that lol

btw I'm a new follower of yours and new to the book blogging scene, return the favor?

I like to switch it up and not read too many books of the same genre in a row. But a lot of times when I go to pick out a new book to read from my shelves it hard because there's so many choices that makes it hard to decide.

I'm living proof that having many options is often not a good thing. I have so many books, between Kindle, library, and print books I own, that when the time comes to pick something to read it takes me a really long time! I can scan my titles over and over again and nothing will jump out at me. It can be frustrating.

I deal with it by reading what does eventually grab me. If it's a book I've read a million times? Fine. If it's part of a book? Fine. I finally learned to just let those things go and go with the flow, and eventually a book will grab me.

I'm currently trying to keep it fresh by alternating romance (either contemporary or historical) with UF. I find that works pretty well. In the past though, I went through a chick-lit phase, a literary fiction phase, a non-fiction phase, a Sci-Fi phase…. well, you get the picture. The one constant, though, is that I'm always reading something.

I feel the same way. If I'm having certain moods, I tend to stick to that type of story..
weird how the mind controls us 🙂
