Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

Filed in News , The Smutty Lover Posted on March 25, 2011 @ 2:00 pm 6 comments
Wow this week has been choc-a-bloc with news, Google book developments and even a WTFERY or two. We also had major announcements from a popular author going indie/self pubbed route while an indie self pubbed author has recently sold a 4 book series in a MAJOR deal to big publisher plus a lot more!
The major news that broke this week was Google Books settlement has been rejected due to a class action suit about the scanning books and the automatic opt in issue with orphaned works. Dear Author covers the ruling comprehensively and lays out why it was deemed illegal in a great summary here.
This wont be the end of the matter but it has probably thrown a spanner in the works for their plans of scanning books especially with the matter of orphaned works.

I find this fascinating – While Barry Eisler who has walked away from a five hundred thousand dollar deal to move into self publishing for his next book.
There is an  interesting exchange with self publishing guru K.A Konrath and Barry Eisler why self publishing was a direction he wanted to move into, instead of remaining with a big publisher.

However, Amanda Hocking has announced that she will move into traditional publishing after amazing success of her self published works. She has stated that she found that the process of self publishing was too much to handle and she just wanted to write. St Martins Press won the auction for her next four books and the deal is reported to have reached two million dollars.
Nonetheless, looking at her blog there seems to be some angry people about her move into traditional publishing, which is depressing because I suspect that a lot of authors (and some have already done so) will move into a combination of self publishing/re-releasing backlist books that have been reverted as well as traditional publishing. I hate this US vs THEM thing (which seems to be cropping up again and again in publishing) and I can see why Hocking has decided this route.

Now this piece of news I am not surprised about because I have heard rumblings on Facebook and Twitter for weeks about Dorchester selling books they don’t own the rights for. Horror writer Brian Keene has blogged about his issues about his struggles and frustration with the struggling publisher and has stated that they readers should boycott them due to mishandling and illegal selling of his books. Keene also points out that other authors have been affected and has stated that along with them – he asking for a boycott of Dorchester and their books and for reviewers and readers not to buy or support them due to this.
This isn’t the first time a publisher has been accused of selling books without the rights and I definitely think it wont be the last. But I can’t not help think a boycott wont help the situation because it will affect the authors still signed with Dorchester and their future releases which will just increase more problems. But if you do see any of the authors listed at his blog entry including Keene’s books linked with Dorchester on any ebook retailer its definitely not sanctioned by them.
There is also an oddity with Dorchester’s bookclub page where they are offering Penguin books as part of their March offerings, however they are unavailable for sale which is understandable because they are not Dorchester books. But when you check their March schedule page here (which is a much harder link to find) – None of the books are offered  but offers Dorchester’s upcoming schedule of books. I kind of doubt this is a mistake and if I was an author who had a book out this month via the Book Club – I would not be pleased. But it makes you wonder what is going on behind the scenes with this publisher because you would think the staff working on the site would know what books Dorchester is releasing.

In more disappointing news – The Hollows author, Jessica Verday has stated in a blog entry that her YA short story which features a M/M romance was declined for the anthology, Wicked Pretty Things which is edited by Tricia Telep. This is pretty disappointing because its differentiating gay characters as the other and like a few commentators have stated in Jessica’s blog entry that people of colour wouldn’t have faced the same decision. Tricia did comment in the blog to explain why but I don’t think the explanation rings true and seems to have dealt with the issue very lightly I really hope the publisher changes their mind and includes this story for the anthology because focusing on the fact that it HAS a gay romance seems to be detrimental and implies prejudice because the characters are too different and other which is a huge shame.

Breaking – The publishers have responded to Jessica about regarding the declination of the story. Below is their statement on the issue via Jessica’s blog.

STATEMENT FROM CONSTABLE & ROBINSON:
Constable Robinson said…

The young adult anthology Wicked Pretty Things, due to be co-published in the United States by Running Press, was commissioned by Constable & Robinson Ltd, which is wholly responsible for its content. Running Press has no direct association with Trisha Telep, the editor of the anthology.
The misunderstanding which has led to Jessica Verday’s story, ‘Flesh Which Is Not Flesh’, being excluded from this anthology, ostensibly on the grounds that it concerns a m/m relationship, is entirely regrettable and something we have sought to correct. Constable & Robinson Ltd remains fully supportive of LGBTQ writing, and apologises unreservedly for any offence caused.

STATEMENT FROM RUNNING PRESS:
Running Press said…

Running Press Teens deeply regrets any offensive comments recently made by Trisha Telep, anthologist for Wicked Pretty Things. At no point were we consulted in Trisha’s decision to reject Jessica Verday’s story as submitted. Opinions expressed by Ms. Telep do not reflect our publishing philosophy. As publishers of quality Young Adult literature, we proudly support the LGBT community and are deeply committed to publishing diverse authors and subject matters. We have since approached Ms. Verday to reconsider including her original m/m story in the anthology. Even though we respect her decision to decline, we have a responsibility to all of the talented writers that have contributed to Wicked Pretty Things, and therefore intend to move forward with publication.

This sounds a bit of a copout because the editor works closely with the publisher and the reasons why this story was declined or asked to be changed to a F/M one basically reeks of discrimination even if it was unintentionally. But I agree with Jessica’s point that this seems to be distancing themselves from this brouhaha and glossing over their involvement in this matter. Another new development – another author whose work was accepted for the anthology has withdrawn it due to this. Lesley Livingston has stated that in her blog that “My decision to pull my submission is a personal one. I’m doing what I feel is right, based on what I believe. And that is this: gay or straight or somewhere inbetween, love is love. Full stop.” I think this sums up perfectly about the whole issue. It is very sad that decisions have led to this which will tarnish an otherwise great anthology.
Last Minute News: Another author Lisa Manchev has pulled out of the anthology. I got a funny feeling this will be cancelled
And lastly – I would like to highlight an upcoming auction for this weekend to raise money for a blogger who has been integral for the romance community, Fatin who runs the RR@H Novel Thoughts and Book Talk blog as well as other things. Due to the tragic killing of her husband – the blogging/author communities are joining forces to rally around her.

I am going to copy and paste the deets below. Please check it out and bid on any items that appeal to you. There is some great things on offer and check out the link here for the list of the goodies! http://operationauction.wordpress.com/

None of the items will show up until the auction is live and not all items are going up at the same time. We have divided the items as equally as possible into three batches.

Batch One will be up March 27th at 12:01 am PDT, ending March 30th at 12:01am

Batch Two will be up March 28th at 12:01 am PDT, ending March 31st at 12:01am

Shipping details will be in the description of each item. Please read those carefully before you bid to see if it is US only or international.

We have a few Historical Romances from our favourite authors – first up Elizabeth Hoyt’s latest.

And the nomnomilicious upcoming Mackenzie book by Jennifer Ashley (sigh I love the Mackenzies!!!)

We have the cover for Jeaniene Frost’s next Night Huntress book! Although I like it – I am not keen on the fact they used a different model for Cat.

And finally we have the cover/title and synopsis of the next Stephanie Plum book. I AM not feeling the love with the fact there may be ANOTHER love interest in this series. You can read the 1st half of the excerpt here

Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and no one knows this better than New Jersey bounty hunter, Stephanie Plum.

Dead bodies are showing up in shallow graves on the empty construction lot of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds. No one is sure who the killer is, or why the victims have been offed, but what is clear is that Stephanie’s name is on the killer’s list.
Short on time to find evidence proving the killer’s identity, things get even more complicated for Stephanie when family and friends decide it’s time for her to decide between long-time off-again-on-again boyfriend, Trenton cop, Joe Morelli, and the bad boy in her life, security expert, Ranger. Stephanie’s mom is encouraging Stephanie to dump them both, and choose a former high school football star who has just returned to town. Stephanie’s sidekick, Lula, is encouraging Stephanie to have a red-hot boudoir “bake-off”. And Grandma Bella, Morelli’s old world grandmother, is encouraging Stephanie to move to a new state when she puts “the eye” on Stephanie.
With a cold-blooded killer after her, a handful of hot men and a capture list that includes a dancing bear and a senior citizen vampire, Stephanie’s life looks like it’s about to go up in smoke.

So what do you think about the issues of going self publishing vs traditional publishing? Do you think Amanda Hocking deserves the criticsm of going mainstream or do you think Barry Eisler’s choice to go it alone is a huge risk?
And what do you think of Dorchester’s current crop of issues?

Dorchester's problems suggest serious management issues. So sad to lower a company due to a few poor decisions. (Can anyone say Enron?)

Authors need to choose what is best for them. For us readers, books are entertainment. For authors, it's business. It's their livelihood. No one should tell an architect which job to take, or criticize her for the decision. Let's just hope the Hockings, Eislers and Konraths of the world keep offering us the books we love–whatever the format.

    Thanks for an info-packed column.

Dorchester has had problems for ages. I know several authors are rallying a boycott of the publisher. It is a David vs Goliath situation. Until authors have powerful blood-sucking lawyers go after the big, bad publisher, I think they will try to get away with as much as they can.

I think it is sad that the m/m romance was rejected. I hope the anthology is stalled or cancelled. This isn't the middle ages. YA readers need stories that represent them not the ideal, cookie-cutter image some publisher wants to project.

As for the Auction: There are so many great items you all. I have narrowed my bidding choices to a top ten list. I have also donated 3 non-book related items. Sign up for your ebay account now so you can start bidding on Sunday! It really is for a great cause. I can't believe how many items have been donated already.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

I think each author has to look to what they feel is right for them. What will work. I can't begrudge the livelihood.

I agree with your statement about the cover of the next Night Huntress novel. I love the cover, love its setting and all, but I prefered the previous girl. She was more like Cat, in my opinion.
So I'm sorry they have to choose a new girl for the cover, but I'm sure One Grave at a Time will be as great and awsome as the previous books 🙂
