Romance and Me: Why Do We Love Those Highlanders?

Hey Everyone!

Something has been constant from the very first historical romance novel I have read (Velvet Angel by Jude Devereaux) when I was about 18 to this day: the kind of hero I find irresistible. The one that always makes me swoon from the very first scene he enters the story and makes my heart and eyelashes flutter:
the Scottish Highlanders!

I bet many of you understand my boundless attraction to them, but for those who need to see the light and understand why Scottish Highlanders are better than any simpering Regency or Edwardian Duke*, here it is:
– they are always warmhearted (no matter how big and strong they are, every single one of them melts in front of little children :-D);
– they are ALWAYS tall, strong, muscular, fierce looking, with chests hard as rock and a colossal height, they are the epitome of virility;
– a woman always feels safe, protected, cherished and passionately loved by them;
– they are intense and passionate (and oh yeah, possessive *wide grin*), but are great at keeping their heads in critical situations then losing their calm at times of seduction ;-p lol;
– though they are huge and strong, these men who have fought war after war still have a moving gentleness and kindness to them;

– and of course there are the kilts! 😀
Mmmm. sorry but it seems my mind went to more agreeable places. So let me know:
Is there another reason why you think Scottish Highlander heroes are the best?
Or you prefer heroes from another time period? And why is that? Good luck in trying to convince me 😉
Let the Battle of the heroes begin!
* oh you know what I mean, I’d be happy with Mr. Darcy anyday so no slight meant there 😉

    How can one NOT love the Highlander? Like you've stated,a woman always feels protected by them.
    By the way – love the flipped up kilt photo ;).

    You gotta love a man in a kilt! Easy access!

    I'm a fan of Gerard Butler – his accents makes me swoon. While I get a bit tired of too many "didna's" and "you dinna ken lassie's" in some of the highlander type books, I do love the accent IRL!

    Plus, Jamie Fraser. Do I really need to say more? (I think I'm preaching to the converted anyways!) 🙂

    @Amelia, aren't they great? Whenever I need a comfort read, I know I can turn to a Scottish historical romance 🙂

    @blodeudd: oh you summed it up perfectly!! How could I forget to mention the castles, the lush green hills and of course THE ACCENT!! mmm.. *delicious shivers* my only excuse is that my mind was in the gutter (just look at that kilt photo) ;-p lol

    @Victoria: Glad you like the photo. yum! 😉

    &Kaetrin: OMG! I can't believe I forgot to mention Jamie Fraser!! He is the only reason and argument to wina nyone over to our side! He is the epitome of the Ideal Man! *sighs* if you don't believe me (or if simply you just want to revisit him, read Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, that is a masterpiece, my absolute Desert Island Keeper!)

    Stella–Can't forget the accents. Other than that, you've got it covered!

    I love books that has a Highlander on the front cover! I have a wish to go to Scotland to see if men really look like this over there 🙂

    Stella, how about Irish man? I hear their accent is sexy too 😉 (blame Roarke from In Death series to my love for Irish men *lol)

    For highlander, my favorite is vampire highlander from Kerrelyn Sparks's Love At Stake, haha, they are verra funny

    Is it true that Highlander not wearing anything under their kilt? Really? :O

  • Stella (Ex Libris) May 6, 2011 at 9:15 am

    @Ren: I agree, any men from the Celt countries is delicious, their brogue accent makes us melt faster than butter in the summer 😀

    And yep, nothing under the kilt (a couple of years ago when I was in Rome with friends we met a group of about 15 Scots men in different parts of the city we kept meeting them, they had on festive kilts with feathers on their hats and silver purse, but when some of them sat down or bowed down to the fountain, yep we got quite a peek! LMAO! :-D)

    @Natalija: I have been to Ireland first and fell in love with the accent, how kind and friendly people were and the lush green countryside, but then I went to Scotland and I felt the magic. It is breathtakingly beautiful and has such a rich history! I definitely want to go back there and even maybe have my honeymoon there 🙂
