The Good, the Bad and the Are-You-Kidding-Me?

This week we have an unexpected French covers invasion. Caro visited her French amazon site and was bombarded with new, more or less, gems for our post series. Here is what she found. Be prepared for optical illusions, whory lipstick and messy heroines that never change their shirt. Enjoy and please leave us your two cents in the comments.

Susi: I like the Masques cover. The girl looks really mysterious and the wolf has this intriguing look- as if he’s gazing right into your soul. But again really much blue and that’s just not my color.
I’m not really sure what I should think of the Angels’ Blood cover. The feather doesn’t look like an angel feather. It looks so ordinary. Not sure what exactly I would expect but it would be just more. LOL But the rest is okay. Still like the Tony Mauro covers more though (for book 1 and 3- let’s not start talking about book 1 LOL). I have never read more than a few pages of Ms Harris books so I have no idea what this one is about. The cover is way too blue for my taste and this cover looks pretty depressing. Is she dying? Her eyes are kind of scary too. Are they completely black? Very weird. I wouldn’t buy it.
Caroline: To be honest the first thing I thought when looking at Masques was ‘Hey is she dancing Flamenco?’. Then I saw the sword. Is it me or there’s something weird going on with her face and arm? Is her face in front of her arm or behind? I’m not sure what I see. Otherwise the cover isn’t that bad. It’s a typical cover for this publisher.
The Nalini cover disturbed me. I was SO happy when I learned that one of her book would finally be translated in French (I’m pretty sure it’s the first non-harlequin one) …and what a disappointment when I saw the cover. Eeeek It’s just fugly…the feather is ugly, the drop of blood looks more than fake, the title isn’t even appealing. Seriously…you’d buy it based on this cover?? I wouldn’t. Mehh
The Harris cover is in the same vein as the first book in the series. It’s again, very blue. But the first thing I thought was ‘is there something stuck in her nose?’. It’s not a bad cover…it’s just meh! (God I have so much vocabulary!)
Susi: LMAO now I see the weird face-arm thing too! Damn you!
Caroline: *rubs hands together* soon you’ll see Glasses on Dirty too *g* Muhahahahaha
Susi: So this Micah cover is really good. I don’t like the books but this cover could tempt me. I like the model and her shirt looks kind of rocky- I approve. *wink* In contrast to that the Jennifer Estep cover is rather plain. The girl looks so pale. I don’t remember the American cover model to be that white. Anyone knows if the heroine is described like this? And again I don’t like the blue thingy at the bottom. OMFG what did they think when they chose this cover for the Sparks book? She looks like a 80s whore or something. Her hair is so weird and her lips look too dry. It just looks cheap. Blech!
Caroline: You know if I had not heard all about the Anita Blake series on the web, I would probably have been tempted while looking at the French covers. All the books in the French version have great tempting covers (well they can’t be worse than the originals right?). I really like the cover for Micah, like you said Susi it has a rocky vibe. I even like the model’s pose. Very pretty.
The cover for Spider Bite was the reason I started looking at French covers. The French Amazon recommended I read this book (even though I’ve never bought books in french O_o , anyway…) and it took me a few minutes to make the link with the original cover. It’s not that I don’t like it…I mean it’s…huh…well special. lol Well she’s half naked but otherwise it’s not so bad. I do like that It’s all very colorless except for the blood. I just wish I didn’t feel the urge to hike her pants up LOL
Poor Kerrelyn Sparks…what did she do to deserve such horrible French covers? You’re right Susi, she looks right out of the 80s. I want to push her hair back. And that lipstick….eeeek. Me not like-y.
Susi: I like the covers for book 1 and 3. The arrangement is good and the pose of the girl looks kick ass even though I don’t like the green on book 3. I really like the orange on cover 2 but what is the girl doing? Where is she looking? Is her opponent that uninteresting that she started to look for flowers. O_o Why should I read something where not even the main character is interested in what happens. Totally weird.
Caroline: Well it’s a good thing there’s the name of the author on the book ‘cause I’m pretty sure I’d never have guessed which series that was. First…is that a Cathedral in the back? Or the English Parliament? I don’t mind the model but she looks different on the 1st one. I’ve NEVER understood the covers where the model put the sword on her body as if it wasn’t a very sharp and very pointy knife. Please, someone calls Obi Wan I’m pretty sure she stole that light saber from him on the 2nd cover. If you look at them one after the other it looks like the girl is trying to turn the sword clockwise (or counter clockwise depending on how you look at it)…is there a secret message here? Is she trying to indicate the time of the day? And they couldn’t have at least made the model change clothes? Yes the heroine is wearing that same shirt and necklace every day for 2 years. o_O
Susi: LMAO now I’m thing of Ewan McGregor. You did that on purpose and I love you for that. LOL *swoons to herself*
Caroline: I totally did. *g*
What do you think of these covers? Which is your favorite and which is the worst?
Would you have been tempted by any of these?
Do you also think we should have a pic of Ewan Mcgregor half naked as a random appetizer to make our Obi Wan point? (Susi is jumping up and down and screams YEEEEESSSS!!!!)

Bleh, ugly ugly and ugly. But I do kind of like the Chloe ones

  • pattepoilue May 9, 2011 at 2:17 pm

@Blodeuedd well I KINDA liked them too but I can't stop seeing the Light saber sword O_O.

  • Sugar May 9, 2011 at 2:36 pm

it doesn't take much to catch my eye.. shiny stuff.. pretty stuff.. colors.. etc..
so I kinda like em all..

  • Celine May 9, 2011 at 2:39 pm

At first I really thought that girl was holding a lightsaber. I haven't read the books so I didn't make the sword connection that fast. Why put her in exactly the same shirt? You'd think she has more in her wardrobe than that..

  • pattepoilue May 9, 2011 at 2:42 pm

@Sugar welcome to the dark side…we love covers! *g*

@Celine Yeah…what annoys me is that they could have least had made it look different…I don't know change the color or something. It only shows they don't really care and use 3 pics from the exact same photo-shoot. Meeh

  • BooksforCompany May 9, 2011 at 4:19 pm

Love this post! Funny to read and l agree with you both.
The cover for Angels' Blood could be so much better but the feather is boring and the blood looks WAY too fake!
The girl in Jennifer Estep's cover is WAY too thin.
    My favourite is Micah.

  • Sullivan McPig May 9, 2011 at 4:55 pm

Those last three really annoy me. I wish for once they would pick a model who actually knows how to hold a sword! The third one is ridiculous! What's she going to do holding the sword like that? Commiting harakiri?

  • pattepoilue May 10, 2011 at 1:05 am

@Booksforcompany It's just too sad about the Nalini cover. She deserves a great cover. This one sucks. 🙁 Micah's cover is just soooo pretty, too bad I'll never read the books in this series lol.

@Sullivan McPig Exactly!!! She can do anything in this position with her hands like that in the sword O_o Mehhh

  • Aleetha May 10, 2011 at 2:53 am

I wonder about the title of Charlaine Harris book above. I liked it. It's better than any cover of her books that I found in goodreads.

I don't recognize the next three books.

the last three books are also not that good. Oooupppss. I hope the one who designed the covers wont read my comment. 😀

  • SusiSunshine May 10, 2011 at 4:06 am

@Blodeuedd LOL indeed and yes those are kinda okay.

@Sugar At least someone likes them 😉

@Celine As much as I like lightsabers there shouldn't be one on this cover. And that shirt thing is rather disturbing.

@BooksforCompany Thank you! And yes Nalin deserves a better cover. I love this series so much! No idea why so always put those thin girls on it. Me not liky.

@Sully Your word into the cover goddess ear. LOL Harakiri indeed.

@Aleetha Not a big Harris fan so I wouldn't even notice anything about the title. And let us all hope they don't read along. *innocent face*

  • Ren May 10, 2011 at 6:32 am

Gawd! This post must be my favorite! I adore you, both Susi and Pattepouile!! *lol* . We such a cover lover and complainer 😛

My favorite must be Marques by Patricia Briggs, and the least is the rest? 😛 Not that I complain for Chloe Neill's cover, It's good enough. And the France version of Angel's Blood is MORE MORE BETTER than Indonesian version!

I still cry and curse the publisher until now. To make (MY) Raphael like that *sobs*.

Hey, I love Toni Mauro's artwork too. You know cover of Spider's Revenge by Jennifer Estep, eh? Great!:D

  • pattepoilue May 10, 2011 at 11:30 am

@Aleetha Lol i sure hope they aren't looking either LMAO If I knew they read our posts I'd probably think twice about what I say 😉

@Ren YAY Thank you! I'm glad our post is entertaining =) Give us a chance to criticize on a cover and we're happy *g* Welcome to the club.
Oh I just started listening to the first book in the series by Jennifer Estep. Pretty covers indeed!

  • LSUReader May 10, 2011 at 9:23 pm

I'm much happier with the American covers for these books. I don't think the Estep cover model looks like Gin Blanco–too thin and not at all deadly. The Hamilton cover model doesn't resemble the Hispanic Anita Blake, either. As for Harris's Sookie covers, I like the Lisa Desimini artwork for the original books. I think Caro said it best: these are basically "meh."

  • pattepoilue May 11, 2011 at 12:56 am

@LSUReader ohh i should have mentioned that the Harris cover is not a Sookie book It's a Harper Connelly book.
I'm just only discovering Gin Bianco so It wouldn't have shocked me.
Anita is Hispanic? LMAO I had NO idea. I haven't read this series but what I have in mind is the model on the ugly UK covers. *shudders*

  • LSUReader May 11, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Oh, okay…that cover model could be Harper Connelly. That works. And yes, Anita Blake's mother was Mexican. Blake is petite, with long, curly, black hair. And weapons. Lots and lots of weapons.

  • pattepoilue May 11, 2011 at 12:51 pm

@LSUReader THIS (http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1181580476l/1166994.jpg ) is the pic I have in mind when I think abotu Anita Blake. O_O I think this cover is responsible for me not picking up the books when I first heard about them. lol As you can see it's far from your description. I like the french cover wayyyy better *g*

  • draconismoi May 11, 2011 at 8:55 pm

Phew. Covers like these crush my delusion that U.S. UF covers are crappy while the foreign ones rock. I guess there is just an endemic issue in UF with subpar covers. Sigh.

  • Stella (Ex Libris) May 12, 2011 at 10:40 am

Wow, where to begin. I am always so disppaointed how bleak and unoriginal French covers are 🙁 I really want to love them, but then they come out with these choices and I'm left disappointed. anyway..

Caro, I'm with you on the arm/face weird distortion, that was the first thing I noticed and kept staring at it for mins, trying to make sense of it. But couldn't..

The cover of Micah looks gorgeous! Finally a beautiful French cover! 😀

But again the Jennifer Estep covers are so much better in the original version, this one is washed out and so uninspiring.

And the Chloe Neill series: what's with the neon green light? laser sword? and the cover model looks too young on the 1st cover, about 13-15, I prefer the way she looks on book 3, but these neon lights, ugh.

(the HUngarian covers are usually 95% of the original US covers in the UF department, however they have very different ones in the romance/chick lit area, there I can't usually match the Hungarian title+cover to the original one)

  • pattepoilue May 12, 2011 at 1:52 pm

@Draconimoi I'm often very very happy i read in English and not in French.

@Stella I KNOW! I think it's a real hindrance that French covers always mostly suck. I tried recommending a few books to my cousin and I can still hear her say 'that doesn't look very good'…only by looking at fugly covers.

Yeah the French Anita Blake books and even her other series has great covers. Very catchy. Well at least in comparison to the other fuglies. lol

Ohhh too bad in BULGARIA they don't have different covers most of the time. *wink* I do understand though, coz sometimes french publishers would just put a very weird cover with a strange title and I'd never guess it was the same book!

  • Alisha (MyNeedToRead) May 15, 2011 at 7:48 am

Hm. I'm just not feelin' any of them. The Chloe Neill books in particular…they kind of look like somone just took some quick photos on a 10-buck camera and called it a day.

That said, I need those CLV books in my life. How fun would it be to read them in French?!?! :o)

  • SusiSunshine May 15, 2011 at 8:03 am

@Ren Thank you. We were so proud that we could interview Toni. He is awesome.

@LSUReader Yes I agree, meh says it pretty good. LOL

@Alisha LOL yes it looks like that.
