Happy Monday everyone! Today we would like to welcome to Book Lovers Inc. YA Author Shelley Workinger. Her works include Solid and soon to release Settling. Shelley is here today to share a bit of an insight on how the Solid series began.
At the risk of sounding a bit corny (or should I say flaky?), the “Solid” series came together a lot like a snowman. What will eventually be one complete whole – made up of three dependent parts – all started with just one small speck.
That first idea – the romantic scene that eventually became chapter twelve of “Solid” – was born in a dream. Now, I have vivid dreams all the time, but that one really stuck with me – kind of like good snowman-making snow , I couldn’t stop thinking about how those people could’ve ended up in that setting. That tiny What? quickly rolled into a How?, then a Why?, and I just kept pushing that ball across the field of questions until I had a solid base for a story.
So that bottom piece (book one – “Solid”) was built by answering some of each of the traditional W’s: Where are they? Who are they? Why are they there? What has happened, is happening now, and how? But the main job of the first book was to provide the foundation for the series, so the only question that gets fully answered is the Where? In “Solid,” you find out where they are, why they’re there, and why their parents are not. You are also given some insight into the Who?, which is really the focus of book two. You met the characters in “Solid,” but you get to know them in “Settling” – the middle book of the series, or the core of the snowman.
You can safely assume that “Settling” will also set up the What? questions to be answered in book three (“Sound”): What can the kids do and what are they going to do with these abilities? And that’s when you’ll finally get the complete Why? and How? – the most cerebral questions saved for the head of the creation.
I hope hearing how one small idea “snow-balled” into a series gives readers a fun perspective on the whole.

It sounds like a great series. I love how you were able to take a scene from a dream and by asking yourself a series of questions, you were able to create a whole new world.

I loved Solid! Such an innovative and creative concept. Do you ever base the characters off of you? How do you do research for your books? edysicecreamlover18ATgmailDOTcom GFC Krystal Larson

Thank all of you so much for checking out my new series!

And thanks for all the cover love; @ Estella – I do them myself 🙂

@ Krystal – I use a lot of my own flaws for the characters; it's better than using those of my friends since I still want them to BE my friends 🙂
And I do a ton of online research, so I'm sure all my interest in genetic manipulation, military bases, and bandwidth encryption has put me on some sort of government red list!

Anyway, if you didn't win this giveaway at Book Lovers Inc., you might want to check out the "Solid" series promotion I'm offering for the month of July:

    Thanks again!
