Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

Yay its another weekend and another news post! This week’s post sadly has confirmation of the demise of Borders and some interesting developments in the world of publishing..
I reported a few weeks ago that Borders was heading into complete liquidation and there was no sign of the remaining stores being bought out. Well sadly I have to confirm that this is the case and even more disappointing and depressing is the fact that all the remaining 11000 staff are out of a job. I really hoped that Borders could have been saved but it looks like it it will be a major casualty from this economy and changing publishing landscape.
The publisher, Gollancz has announced that they are going to be reissuing and creating a new ebook library called The Sci Fi Gateway, for out of print Sci Fi and Fantasy books, many of the authors who they hope to reissue includes, Frank Herbet, Arthur C Clarke and Marion Zimmer Bradley, as well others whose books have gone out of print. It really feels like that publishers are realising that there is a whole new market for out of print books/authors and I can see there will be more of this type of developments with other publishers.
There is no further details about the cost of the books but they will be available digitally. I will post further details when the site is up and running.

Charlaine Harris has said and confirmed that the 13th book of the The Sookie Stackhouse series will be the end. I think she mentioned this before but wasn’t entirely sure but it looks like it is a definite cert that this will be the end of the series. She is currently writing Book 12. (Prays that Team Eric wins!)
And another author has confirmed that another long running series is coming to an end – albeit for now. Kelley Armstrong has confirmed on Twitter that the 13th Otherworld book (must be the magic number!) is coming to an end and Kelley has stated that the title will be just ‘13’ and will again be narrated by Savannah. I feel really sad about this but from what I hear there is some exciting stuff coming from Kelley – she will be teaming up with Melissa Marr for a new series entitled The Blackwell Pages – not much info on this or the new Adult series Omens and Shadows which she will be working on after she has finished 13. But Kelley has said this wont be the end of the Otherworld series and is planning on a couple of anthologies which will include new stories and may return back to this series later.

Fans of The Hunger Games who are excited for the upcoming movie can check out this awesome motion teaser poster. I am not particularly keen on the casting, but I have to say that I love the prebuzz marketing.

More movie news – Sherrilyn Kenyon who is at the San Diego Comic Con has announced that her Dark Hunter series will be turned into a series of movies/shows and webisodes. Amber Entertainment Productions which will produce the books, will focus on The Chronicles of Nick YA series as a tv series. For more check the Variety article.

And finally – remember that smex scene from Barrons POV from the DarkFever books? Well go and check out Karen Marie Moning’s site. ITS UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lila Di Pasqua’s husband is hosting a blog party on Lila’s blog! Each day he’ll be interviewing a different husband of a popular romance authors. You definitely check it out, not to mention that there will be a LOT of giveaways.

And now for this week’s upcoming cover’s.

Richelle Mead’s Shadow Heir – the 4th book in the Dark Swan series haz a cover and a blurb.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Richelle Mead returns to the Otherworld, a mystic land inextricably linked to our own–and balanced precariously on one woman’s desperate courage…

Shaman-for-hire Eugenie Markham strives to keep the mortal realm safe from trespassing entities. But as the Thorn Land’s prophecy-haunted queen, there’s no refuge for her and her soon-to-be-born-children when a mysterious blight begins to devastate the Otherworld…

The spell-driven source of the blight isn’t the only challenge to Eugenie’s instincts. Fairy king Dorian is sacrificing everything to help, but Eugenie can’t trust the synergy drawing them back together. The uneasy truce between her and her shape shifter ex-lover Kiyo is endangered by secrets he can’t–or won’t–reveal. And as a formidable force rises to also threaten the human world, Eugenie must use her own cursed fate as a weapon–and risk the ultimate sacrifice…

Charley Davidson—grim reaper extraordinaire, private investigator . . . meh—is practicing her profession under the influence, caffeine and copious amounts of it, due to an extreme desire to induce insomnia. Every time she closes her eyes, Reyes Farrow, the part-human, part-supermodel son of Satan, is there. Only thing is, he’s a tad peeved. She did bind for all eternity, so it’s hard blame him. But 13 days without a wink is bound to bring out the crazy in a girl. So, when a man hires her to find his wife, Charley accepts the job with one goal in mind: Put the man behind bars, and not the wet kind. She can sense the guilt waft off him and vows to find the woman’s body and prove he’s a murderer.

In the meantime, Reyes is back in prison and none too happy about it . . . so Charley thinks, until she is carjacked by the dark-haired rake, who swears the very man he went to prison for killing is not only alive, but close by. And he wants Charley to find him.

While a visit to her old friend Rocket sheds no light on Reyes’s situation, Charley finds out the man’s wife is still alive and time is running out. Finding her before she dies would be a miracle, but she has to try. Together with the help of a fashion-impaired receptionist named Cookie, Charley sets out to bring the bad guys to justice. She just hopes Reyes is not one of them. And that she’s not hallucinating from her self-induced bout with insomnia.

We also have the 3rd UK cover for the Lord of Deliverance series – Thenatos’ book and it isn’t it yummy?

And finally – Jennifer Ashley’s PNR Shifter Unbound series, has a cover for the 3rd book. Wild Cat.

When Feline Shifter Cassidy Warden saves detective Diego Escobar from plunging to his death, the naked Shifter woman takes his breath away. But she’d been breaking all kinds of human laws, and Diego, to save her from termination, has to promise his department he’ll watch over her.

Diego finds the task harder than he thinks–Cassidy is trying to find out what kind of mysterious hunter killed her mate two years ago, a hunter that could bring danger to all Shifters. Plus Cassidy has scent-marked Diego–essentially telling all other Shifter females, “Hands off.”

Diego risks his personal and professional life getting involved with Cassidy, but he realizes he’ll do anything, even confront the deadliest of assassins and his own inner demons, to keep her safe

So it seems a few series is coming to an end right now, which other series do you think should end or shouldn’t? And what do you think of Border’s liquidation, do you think this spells the end of bookshops as we know it since indie stores are facing hard times too?

Oh poop, now I am not excited about the dark hunters any more. I do not want YA Nick fighting monsters and being all YA. I want sexy dark hunters

I am so sad that Borders is closing. I loved visiting our local store. They will be missed.

@bloduedd I am not keen on the YA books but its the audience that is very very popular. The article also suggests that the other books will be focused on too but whether its movies/webisodes who knows.

@Diana – I am really sad as well – book stores are having a hard time right now with all these changes.

I do think that there is a natural end for many series so although I'll be sorry to see Sookie go, I'm glad Charlaine is ending that one. I tend to feel like 10 books or less is probably enough for most series.

As for Borders – very mixed feelings there. I read mostly ebooks these days so it doesn't matter much to me, but I do feel bad for all the people who can't afford an ereader plus all the kids who won't know the joy of unlimited browsing amongst all those wonderful books.

I have a lot of respect for authors who can end a series, especially a long-running series, to their satisfaction. I'm always sad to see a loved series end but at the same time, 13 books is a lot! Considering how relatively infrequently I reread now it would take a long time to reread everything. Plus, now we'll know the story in its entirety!

As for Borders, frankly I don't remember the last time I shopped there. I completely feel for the employees and the impact the closing will have on them and their families though.

I'm so bummed out about Border's. First they closed the closest Border's to me (with the BEST romance section!) so that I would have to drive ~30 minutes to the next one and now that one's closing, too. Sure, there's a B&N relatively nearby, but it's not the same. Also, all that talk about indie bookstores, I'd shop there more IF they had better romance sections! I don't go to my local indie bookstore unless I want a signed cookbook or something. All the stores with just 3 small shelves of romance books, don't expect me to browse there. Yes, I have a Kindle. Yes, I've been reading ebooks for a few years. I still want a paper book, for the cover, if nothing else. Amazon doesn't show the stepbacks of many books which is a big drawback for browsing.
