Today we’re very happy to welcome Darynda Jones on Book Lovers Inc. Darynda is the author of a very original and funny UF series (well in my opinion!). The 2nd book in her Charley Davidson series is coming out tomorrow! I’m impatiently awaiting to get my own audiobook copy of it! Please let’s give a warm welcome to Darynda!
Thank you so much for having me!!! On Tuesday the second in the Charley Davidson series releases, and I’ve been so excited. It’s called SECOND GRAVE ON THE LEFT and is about a female PI who was born the grim reaper. With her special set of skills, she solves mysteries for both the living and the dead, and of course, she gets into all kinds of trouble.

One of the things I set out to do with this series was to create a character the reader could really root for. Charley is one part Buffy, one part Stephanie Plum, and two parts Lorelei Gilmore from the Gilmore Girls. I wanted her to love life but not necessarily everyone in it. So while she pretends to be somewhat of a badass, she’s actually a magnet for trouble, both eliciting it and causing it, and she has to use her smarts and sarcastic wit to get out of the plethora of binds in which she finds herself.
In the meantime, she has discovered the identity of a mystery man who has followed her all her life and who shows up at the most opportune times, mostly to rescue her from whatever she’s gotten herself into. Only he’s just as much of a mystery now as he was when she first discovered him, and in Second Grave, there is no limit to the amount of grief he causes her. They butt heads on several occasions, and each time the heat index rises.

This has been such a fun series to write, and I was wondering, what characteristics do the heroines in your favorite books share? What makes them so memorable?

My favourite heroines are spunky, a bit quirky and above all likeable (I hate it when authors seem to think a capable heroine needs to be a ball busting bitch).

  • ZoeRainDasherBenji August 15, 2011 at 6:41 am

My favourite heroines are full of zest for life.

They're spirited, they don't give up. They screw up, sometimes really badly, but then move on.
They're all really strong women or girls.
See Jo March (Little Women), Elizabeth Bennett (Pride and Prejudice), Anne Shirley (Anne of the Island), Mimi Force (The Van Alen Legacy)

  • ZoeRainDasherBenji August 15, 2011 at 6:45 am

    In YA:

I don't want my heroine to be perfect. I like her strong but with a hint of vulnerability, feisty but not unnecessarily so, humble but not self-effacing, snarky but not bitchy.

witty sarcasm is a must . I like for them to be the hero's equal. Maybe not in physical strength, but emotionally and intellectually. She can take as good as she gives and no whining.

I have heard nothing but great things about this series. It is on my must read list!

I love Heroines that can take care of themselves. They don't need that man but will talk to him if needed. I love strong female characters! Their comments and actions leave their mark.. LOL

My favorite heroines are strong, usually stronger than they realize. I love a smart ass, someone with quick wit. And I love if they have a bit of a Macgyver type aspect to them, that they find a way out of any tough situation.

I confess that I first of you Darynda when I saw Caro was reading your novels and the cute and original cover caught my eye. Then reading now your description of your heroine being "one part Buffy, one part Stephanie Plum, and two parts Lorelei Gilmore from the Gilmore Girls." I know I must read your series 😀

Congrats on the release and I'm intrigued about that mystery man as well 😉

  • Bakerette August 15, 2011 at 10:57 am

I like determination. Strong, female leads who know who they are and what they want and follow their own path to get where they want to be, not letting outside influence sway them.

My favorite heroine has a well developed moral compass and is not afraid to go against the tide for her convictions. She is compassionate and has a great sense of humor. She is insightful and intelligent, keenly so, but is not a show off. She is very secure emotionally but is vulnerable around certain men. She could be your best friend, trustworthy and honest.

  • Sheri Moore August 15, 2011 at 11:15 am

They have to not take any BS from anyone and have a sense of humor going about it. Just as strong and determined as the Alpha Male they hook up with. No Eugene momma boys for them.
Add in fearless and determined with likeable quirks and friends that are just as interesting has them.

My heroines need to be fun, upbeat (the shy mousy kind are also ok but only if they at a later stage get a bit feisty in getting what they want you know become more confident).

The heroine needs to be strong, independant, not affaraid to take life head on and not affraid to stand up for what she believes. And not affraid to take a chance on love.

A heroine to me remains in my mind for a long time if she has these qualities and also if in the book she "teaches" me the reader a valuable life lesson( well the author does but I am sure you understand what I mean).

Thank you for a absolutely gorgeous interview loved every second of it and congratz on the new book is sounds wonderful (I am still searching for a copy of the first one to read and I am sure I will find it ,but for now I want to say thank you for the chance to win a copy!

All the best and God bless

My favorite heroines must smart, witty, strong, though and full of sarcasm. Like me (the sarcasm part, lol). But she have a softer side, and care for people around her. And she must have at last one hot scene with the hero (even I'm jealous when read it, because I want to replace her, lol!)

OOOH! I've been lusting after these two books *forever*! I've heard such awesome things around the blogverse that these books are on the top of my wish list!

A good heroine that I enjoy is one that isn't perfect, or dependent on the love interest/others and that has a good sense of humor. It's one thing to be witty or sarcastic but if the heroine can also see the humor in the situations (ala Stephanie Plum) then it's usually LOL funny to me.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

I like a girl with a sense of humor (including being able to laugh at herself!!!), a dash of sarcasm, and the ability to both take care of herself and ask for help when it's needed. Everyone hates a whiny heroine…

  • JenM August 15, 2011 at 5:16 pm

My two favorite heroines, Kate Daniels and Mercy Thompson seem dissimilar on the surface but both share that determination to do whatever has to be done to save their loved ones and themselves. They never give up, no matter how hopeless the situation might seem. I love heroines with those characteristics.

I would love to win this. I was just at Borders 🙁 and saw First Grave on the Right. Love the cover! Then, I came home and saw this contest! Yippee!
I like my heroines to be smart, self-sufficient, and strong. I want her to be able to tell the hero no and mean it. Thanks for the giveaway.

I don't like a heroine who is whiny, who can't get over herself, or is TSTL.

Some of the characteristics I like include those who are strong when they need to be, have a sense of humor yet can be sassy/snarky when the situation calls for it, and are determined.

Second Grave on the Left sounds like a great read – thanks for the chance to win it.

One of my favorite heroine's is Jennifer Estep's Gin Blanco. I love her because she's had some horrific experiences in her life, but she doesn't give up, she goes out and fights for what she believes in, keeps the weak safe from bullies, and can still open herself up to love. Most of the heroine's I enjoy are similar, they don't give up and fight for what they believe is right.
