Explore This! Wilmington, North Carolina

Today, we’re heading back State-side to visit Wilmington, North Carolina. This lovely city, situated on the Cape Fear, has cropped up in several of Nicholas Spark’s books, including Message in a Bottle and Dear John. It was also the area in which Dawson’s Creek was filmed and is home to Screen Gems studios, which if you’re a movie fan (read: credit reader) like myself, you’ll know what that means.

Let’s take a look to see why its scenery has been such a popular location for filming…and writing about:

The map here shows Wilmington's location at Cape Fear, but also its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. As they say in real estate, it's all about "Location, Location, Location" 😉

Wimington is listed as a "Coast Guard City", so it sees its share of boats docked here.

The architecture here is stunning, similar to southern Gothic, though I'm no expert.

Another example of the lovely buildings.

Beach as far as the eye can see. You wouldn't have to fight for space here 🙂

A ride on a Riverboat! That's gotta be on any travel 'to-do' list, right?

An overview of the area. It looks more populace from here than the previously mentioned books/films would have you believe.

I wonder if this was the pier that John rescued Savannah's purse from in Dear John?

A perfect place to become a beach bum...

As picturesque at night as it is during the day.

With these images, it’s easy to see why this area garners the attention it does! Have any of you visited Wilmington? Have I convinced anyone else to add it to the wishlist?

I have seen all the mentioned movies and series and I was always awed by the location and natural setting. I would love to visit it in real life as well, looks beautiful! Thank you for the virtual tour Jackie! 😀

how funny. I grew up about 1 hour north of Wilmington and I did my freshman/sophmore years at UNCW. It is a fun town.

Great post, and pics, love it. There is beach enough in Holland, so that is not a reason for why I would want to visit it. But the houses are gorgeous. And so not-Dutch that I want to play tourist there.
