A Perfect Blood by Kim Harrison

The Hollows, Book #10

Ritually murdered corpses are appearing across Cincinnati, terrifying amalgams of human and other. Pulled in to help investigate by the FIB, former witch turned day-walking demon Rachel Morgan soon realizes a horrifying truth — a would-be creator is determined to make his (or her) own demons. But it can’t be done without Rachel’s blood.

As a bounty hunter, Rachel has battled vampires, witches, werewolves, demons, and more. But humanity itself might be her toughest challenge.

Another relatively quiet week, to be followed up by an explosion of releases on the last day of the month. In the meantime, there are some interesting new books, including standalones and series titles. Almost all of these books are from authors I’ve never read…but that said, I’m looking forward to checking out C.E. Murphy’s series so that I can catch up to the latest book, Raven Calls (the seventh in the group of books). I actually added The Catastrophic History of You and Me and A Good and Useful Hurt to my TBR list on account of the interesting premise for each; before that, I’d never heard of them. It’s fun to sometimes be intrigued by a book that you’ve never heard of or seen before.

How about you? Do you see any brand new titles that interest you? Have you ever bought a book without any recommendations…or conversely, *gasp* ONLY on recommendation, sight-unseen?

I am looking forward to the new Kim Harrison and the new JD Robb. Love those series, and follow them religiously. CE Murphy has been on my TBR for years now, and I still have not picked them up. Really planning to though.

And yes, I have been buying books based on cover and blurbs alone.

    Quite a selection.

I really need to catch up on The Hollows series and The Walker Papers!

I used to buy books “sight unseen” but I haven’t done that for years. Now I always check reviews before I buy.

Of course! Before I discovered book blogs, I bought books solely on impulse. Wandering around a bookstore, pulling things off the shelf at random because the cover intrigued me, or the title didn’t totally irritate me…..

I read equal parts awesome and crap at that time.

Now I’m pickier. I have to have a recommendation or be familiar with the author to buy a new book. Used books, being cheaper, and often out of print old titles, I am more willing to just grab.

I really hope I get to make it to the Kim Harrison signing next month! She’ll be only 45 minutes away and I really want to read her series and I’d love to do it with a signed book!

Yes, it was my very first paranormal read: BITTEN by Kelley Armstrong. I was captured and now only read almost 90 % paranormal.

Ok…. I’m a Titanic freak! I had to check out that Titanic book, but sadly enough it sounded kind of Meh…

I’m waffling on the new Julia London book.

I used to love all the J D Robb books–they were fast moving, had humor and lots of in-depth characters that interacted well with each other. Eve was edgy and passionate, and it was wonderful seeing her and Roarke develop their relationship over the years. She also had wonderful and complex stories that kept you turning the pages well into the wee hours of the morning.

This story, like too many of the recent JD Robb books (except for Treachery in Death), slow down with too many conversations between Eve and Roarke that I’ve heard many times before in so many of her other books, and with what I consider “filler” as these conversations about her child abuse just go on and on with the same conversations, and nothing fresh. It seems that more and more of these same conversations are added, and it really takes away from the books. It almost seems like she is turning these books into a rehash of her other books, which I don’t read anymore, instead of continuing with the fresh and exciting plots from the JD Robb books. If this continues, I will have to give up on this author, as so few of the recent JD Robb books have held my attention and are what I consider “keepers”, to be added to my bookshelf and read over and over again.

Not fast-paced, not a constant thrill ride, yet nevertheless a satisfying addition to the Eve and Roarke story that showcases a softer side of both characters.

    Have a nice day,
    Sara
