Today we are really happy to welcome at Book Lovers Inc the author Alexia Reed! Alexia’s debut novel Hunting the Shadows is scheduled to be published by Carina Press on May 7th and Alexia is here today to discuss with us character crushes. Interesting topic right?

Hunting the Shadows is a new paranormal romance title that promises to be exciting and really interesting. So, let’s welcome Alexia 🙂 And don’t forget to check the end of the post for your chance to win her book.

You never forget your first character crush. There’s something about them that makes them stand out from all the other characters and makes you wish the book and world was real so that you could crawl into it. I remember my first character crush—teen/adult Ramses from the Amelia Peabody series. I first started the series in highschool while I discovered my love of archaeology and anthropology. It had adventure and Egyptology and as the series progressed, hints of romance. And Ramses was…well Indiana Jones with scruples in helping to preserve (we won’t get into the Indiana Jones movies!) the past.

Over the years, I’ve found other crushes: Avery Thorne from My Dearest Enemy by Connie Brockway, Smite Turner from Unravelled by Courtney Milan, Captain Bennett Wolfe from the Caring and Taming of a Rogue by Suzanne Enoch, and Robert Carroway from England’s Perfect Hero by Suzanne Enoch. I’m sure there are many others, but these are the ones that stand out the most out of all the books I’ve read over the years.

While I love dark characters with secrets, the heroes that I fall for more, and stay memorable, are those who don’t go by the alpha convention. Those who are light and funny and sweet. Some of them may not be able to fight and they may be clumsy, but they come through when it’s important. Most importantly, however, they are perfectly charming and know how to treat the heroine.

Have you ever watched Primeval? It’s a UK paranormal show about these anomalies that open up in our world and let creatures from the past (and sometimes the future) into ours. I heart that show so bad, but the main draw is Connor—the geeky, kind of clumsy scholar who has a huge heart. Make me laugh…make me sigh…and you have a huge fan in me.

That’s not to say I don’t have any dark favourites. I do, it’s just that it takes something a little
different to make a character truly different from all the others out there. I’m all for the tortured hero with a past. Believe me, I love these stories!

Who was your first crush? And why?

Amy has spent her life in isolation. Locked away in the Centre, a secret government facility where children with extraordinary abilities are raised as highly skilled fighters, she longs for a normal life. A life where being around people doesn’t overload her sensitive telepathic mind. A life where she can’t see through the eyes of a murderer as he hunts down his next victim…

J.C. Nikolaiev was a top researcher, but when his conscience got the better of him, he tried to destroy his work and free his subjects—and was imprisoned as a traitor. To save himself and prevent more people from dying, J.C. must catch the serial killer stalking the halls of the facility. But his only leads come from a woman whose thoughts have invaded his mind…

Finally out of the psych ward, Amy joins forces with J.C. to find the killer before he closes in on them. Can their growing attraction withstand the truths they uncover?

While in reality Alexia Reed resides in Ontario, she likes to say that she lives in her own little world. A lover of all things scientific and the paranormal, Alexia uses her books as a way to straddle the realms of fact and fiction—and always with a healthy dose of romance thrown in.

When not writing and reading, Alexia paints, and is the caretaker to two neurotic cats.

Ramses is one of my literary crushes. Who knew that he would develop from a precocious little boy into such a droolworthy character! My first literary crush was probably Jim Frayne from the Trixie Belden mysteries, but there have been many more since then!

It’s been so long since I’ve read Trixie Belden! We had quite a few of those books.

Okay, so now I have my homework, LOL. Remember all of my character crushes!

I remember Max in the Seagulls Woke Me. He was a smart, funny and yes, a thoughtful hero. Very much a guy, but yes, sweet. One of my first.

I just pulled another book I’d read way back off my bookshelf. Flash of Splendour, by Anne Stevenson. And yes, I had a crush on Hugh. While the name isn’t that memorable or ‘hero-like’, he was in love with the heroine and basically, hung around loving her while she figured out what and whom she wanted in love. Strong, capable, dependable, a vet in a small town, taking over her father’s practise. He did finally pull back from always being available to her though, when he realized he had to protect his heart, and that was the thing that made her stop and realize what a treasure she had. I still love that story. I suppose it was the fact that his love was unconditional, and he loved her just the way she was. *sigh*

None of those sound familiar to me. I’m going to have to look them up!

Thanks for such a fun post!!!! I feel the exact same way! Alpha heroes can get kinda scary sometimes and totally turn me off by the whole “I’m man, you woman. Do as I say, cuz I’m aaaaaaaaalpha!”. If I was a heroine in one of those stories, I’d invest in a good tazer and a restraining order. There’d be no HEA for me! Give me a slightly nerdy hero and he’s sexy to me!

I really can’t remember my first hero crush. Oh wait!!!! ( I literally remembered as I was typing that). In junior high, I got into the whole Anne Mccaffrey phase and came across the Harper Hall Trilogy in the library. I fell in love with Sebell and how sweet it was that he was crushing Menolly, the main character. I remember loving all the few scenes they had together 🙂

Ooh Anne McCaffrey was awesome. I loved her books. (And I completely agree about the taser. Some can go overboard with their alphaness. I don’t know how their heroines can put up with them)

Wow, to remember my first crush! I think Dolf from Crusade in Jeans by Thea Beckman, I have read that one so often!

    • Alexia Reed May 2, 2012 at 7:26 pm

I don’t know this one either. Going to have to check this one out as well. I love discovering new characters.

Cat, from The Windflower. All these years later I still adore him. He needs his own book.

Oooh, love all your crushes, too. (Can I share?) Except for Smite Turner, but only because Courtney Milan’s book is still in my TBR queue! I, too, love damaged heroes (Robert Carroway), but also like the cool, debonair types (Cyn Malloren in Jo Beverley’s My Lady Notorious). My crush list would be a long one.

And I, too, had my share of dragonrider crushes–F’nor, F’lessan, that dude that saved Menolly’s life on the beach and took her to Harper Hall (was he the same one who ended up w/ Mirrim, tho? If so, I question his judgement). I’m such a nerd.

I’d already pre-ordered your book. It sounds good and can’t wait to get to it.

    • Alexia Reed May 4, 2012 at 10:32 am

hahaha, okay, I think I can share, Susan. 😉 And you need to read Smite’s book! Move him up your tbr pile! The cool debonair are always interesting as well. I hope you enjoy my book! 🙂

Nice post. I think dark characters make for more interesting reads. Sherlock Holmes because he’s very smart.

    • Alexia Reed May 4, 2012 at 10:37 am

You know, I’ve never read a Sherlock Holmes book? I think that really needs to be rectified.

A guy named Barry I went to high school with. We’re 52 now, and I saw him the other day in Walmart. Yeah, not so good looking now…..
