Around the Bookish World: News-In-Review

Welcome to this week’s news post  and so much happened this week, I am having trouble keeping up with the events. There is book and author news galore, as well more dramallama over reviewers.

First up, I wasn’t sure whether to post this or not but since I wont be linking to the site another chapter in the saga of reviewers who are evil mean girls and poor authors who feel the need to combat this new nefarious underground group.   Earlier this week a site called Stop GR Bullies was launched, which is run by a group of anonymous authors who feel the need to out and identify reviewers (oh the irony!) who they deemed to be part of a mean girl group. This thread on Goodreads sums up with the screen caps with what they have stated which is pretty laughable on how they have twisted posts and tweets to make them appear bad. This is also worrying because of the online stalking element and the fact that they have resorted to this is pretty sad, hypocritical and disappointing. For more on this the  Smart Bitches  has a great post on this but I really hope that this hasn’t put off reviewers in any way.

Rumour has it that the Amazon Kindle Fire may be launched this winter in the UK – with the new models coming out later this summer I am not surprised that they releasing the tablet for the UK market but it will be competing with the Google Nexus and the rumoured mini Ipad.

The DOJ is reporting that they have received over 800 letters in reference to the ongoing lawsuits over Agency pricing. They have stated they will need more time in order for them to publish them but they plan to post them before the final ruling over the settlement which is slated on August the 3rd. Now that is a lot of comments and letters!
It seems the success of 50 Shades is inspiring more similar type books and Beth Kery has a new serial book coming out in e-format over the summer. There are eight instalments and will be released in a weekly basis that will cost $1.99 for each part. I am noting that there is a growth of ebooks being released like this although this is not unique because authors like Charles Dickens published his books in regular instalments. But with the rise of fanfiction which is written in a similar way – this may be more of the norm in the future.

News in Brief:

Seems outing people is the theme of the week – Terry Goodkind has outed a fan who was a pirate at his site. The pirate was a total idiot but the fact he outed someone like this doesn’t set a good precedent.

Judy Blume fans rejoice! Her classic backlist is being reissued as ebooks and Forever is one of the books. Now this book was a staple as a  teen and I remember it being passed around in school. I am glad it is finding  a new audience this reissue.

Neil Gaiman has announced that he will be returning to The Sandman universe after a 25 year break. The graphic novel will be released by Vertigo and is slated for sometime in 2013.

And finally the trailer for Oz: The Great and Powerful was released this week –  It even includes a black and white intro just like its sequel The Wizard of Oz you can view it here.

And now for books and covers  to look out for:

I missed this last week when it was unveiled but the cover  for Steel’s Edge by Ilona Andrews was released last week.

Megan Frampton’s new book Hero of My Heart which is slated to come out later next year.

When Mary Smith’s corrupt, debt-ridden brother drags her to a seedy pub to sell her virtue to the highest bidder, Alasdair Thornham leaps to the rescue. Of course the marquess is far from perfect husband material: Alasdair is too fond of opium, and prefers delirium to reality. Still, Alasdair has come to her aid, and now she intends to return the favor. She will show him that he is not evil, just troubled—and exceedingly handsome, with his perfect, strong body, chiseled jaw, and piercing green eyes.

Mary was a damsel in need of a hero, but Alasdair’s plan is shortsighted. He never foresaw her desire to save him from himself. Alasdair is quite at home in his private torment, until this angel proves that a heart still beats in his broken soul. The devil may have kept her from hell, but will Mary’s good intentions lead them back to the brink—or to heaven in each other’s arms?

We have a cover reveal for the 3rd Unearthly book, Boundless Cynthia Hand.

And finally I love The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa – The Lost Prince is the spin-off book and is the 1st book in Call of the Forgotten series.

Don’t look at Them. Never let Them know you can see Them.

That is Ethan Chase’s unbreakable rule. Until the fey he avoids at all costs—including his reputation—begin to disappear, and Ethan is attacked. Now he must change the rules to protect his family. To save a girl he never thought he’s dare to fall for.

Ethan thought he had protected himself from his older sister’s world—the land of Faery. His previous time in the Iron Realm left him with nothing but fear and disgust for the world Meghan Chase has made her home, a land of myths and talking cats, of magic and seductive enemies. But when destiny comes for Ethan, there is no escape from a danger long, long forgotten.

My name is Ethan Chase. And I may not live to see my eighteenth birthday.

So what do you think of the issue of authors outing people’s  real identity online? Do you think this could open a whole can of worms? And is this a good way to tackle piracy?

I am going to leave you with this gloriously fun take on Pride and Prejudice. It is a fictional vlog called The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and it is very addictive!

Hm, I only read about Misha Collins, I came in on the wrong page..anyway, sheesh, people are idiots. Life is not puppies and roses! If a book is crap it’s crap, whether I tell it to my friend in RL or on the net. So everyone really needs to grow up. Honestly they are authors, do they really think they are so freaking special? There are books that have won award after award, and you know what, I can hate those books cos they suck. Sad really if everyone wants everyone to be nice. hen I will just get pissed when i buy that book and hates it

Opps I posted the wrong page on that link – I’ll go and correct it but its a pretty long thread. And I totally agree but it wont be the end of this but I am sad too see so much crap happening with kerfuffles over reviewers and authors.

I love new bastardizations of Jane Austen because they infuriate a certain pride and prejudice devotee I know. She’s the one describes adaptations as bastardizations. Heheh.

Terry Goodkind is stalking people? And inciting others to stalk, harass, intimidate, and assault them? What. The. Fuck.

The appropriate response to discovering the identity of a pirate is to report them to the authorities! Where they can be criminally prosecuted. Or, barring that, all things being equal, just sue him for tons of $$ in civil court. Either way you are looking at a lot of press painting him as a leech sucking the lifeblood of a humble artist.

Now you’re a psycho stalker who will be held liable for any damages the guy suffers thanks to your reckless endangerment of his life.

And finally….regarding ‘mean girl’ reviews. Dudes. Seriously? There a book blogs out there totally dedicated to only hating on books (see: Requires Only Hate). It’s not a vast conspiracy to ruin your career or attack your dreams. A passionate review about your book inspires other people to read it, no matter the reviewer’s final recommendation. Trust me on this. No matter how many snarky comments I make about the Sookie Stackhouse books….people go on reading them.

Such hysteria…. I was just ranting to a friend about the comparison between authors and graduate students in science/engineering, but I won’t go into that here.

I am so thrilled that STEEL’S EDGE has a serious-looking Thierry Pepin and HERO OF MY HEART has Laura Williams and Paul Marron. Woohoo!

I don’t want to read anymore about bad behaviour from authors or readers or bloggers. Totally tired of it. Thanks for the Ilona Andrews cover, it is lovely.

The cover for Steel’s edge is brilliant – is that a pirate ship I see in the distance…? I need to catch up on my reading of this series!
