1. How do you see the romance community as a whole (your readers and fellow authors)? Where do you see it in 10 years? What’s the best part about it?

Lori: The romance community has the most wonderful women and men in the entire world! Unique, friendly, open and caring. We love talking books, of course. But it’s so much more than that. It’s a rapport, a connection to the storylines, how they relate and don’t relate to real life romances, situations and circumstances. Many times readers can find a small part of themselves in the stories. That often opens a dialogue about real-life issues, the trials we have, what we survive and what we celebrate. People are so diverse that every day I hear, see, learn something new from my readers.

The current “open to the public” networking can be worrisome. So many people put their hearts out there for all the world to see. Used to be we kept our lives private and only shared certain aspects of ourselves. Now we share everything and only choose certain aspects to keep private. That’s the only downside to an otherwise amazing connection. When people share too much, they leave themselves vulnerable in so many ways. Identity theft has become a #1 worry!

But I believe societal trends are cyclical. Before my end of time, I’m sure we’ll find people pulling back and rebelling against the “tell all” mode of social networking. In the meantime, it’s just fabulous to have a forum for chatting with readers. I feel like I know so many of them, even though we’ll never meet in person.

2. Is it difficult to sketch a character who is willing to do anything in order to accomplish what he wants like Logan?

Lori: Honestly, I never sketch out my characters. They tell me (I know, I sound nuts!) the opening scene, and from there, I learn what they’ll do and why just as readers learn. It’s a fun process and keeps the story fresh for me. When I realize a hair color, eye color, height, occupation, etc… I jot it down and keep notes as I go along.
For Logan, when I started the book (opening scene) I knew he was a cop undercover, but I didn’t entirely know why. I knew Pepper was hiding, that she was afraid, but I didn’t know why. I definitely didn’t know she had a brother. 🙂

I have a better grasp on the secondary characters who will get their own books, only because they were fleshed out some in RUN THE RISK. But the nuances of their stories will unfold in the same way – when the characters want to tell.

3. In the book, Pepper transforms from a woman one barely notices to a stunning one. Was her transformation as much fun writing as it was for us readers, reading?

Lori: I don’t want to give away any big plot twists in the book, but that scene – where she flaunts her transformation – was incredibly fun to write! Given how I write – being as surprised as readers – I was as anxious as anyone else to see the reactions. lol. I hope readers enjoyed it as much as I did!

4. What are your plans for the next book in the series?

Lori: It’s already written! Yay. I’ll be starting the 3rd book soon. For readers who enjoyed the “Men of Honor” series, Alice is the female lead in the 2nd book. She appeared in TRACE OF FEVER, and she sort of wormed her way into my heart. Once there, she started whispering to my Muse, and it wasn’t long before I knew she had to have her own story. She was rather insistent about that!

Excerpt:

He scooped the bags away from her and gestured for her to precede him to her apartment.

“—it.” Left empty-armed and unnerved, she kept her shoulders slumped and did her best to bank her reaction to him. “Really, Mr. Stark, I don’t—”

“We’re neighbors, so call me Logan.”

She didn’t want to call him anything and tried to convey that with a show of umbrage.

About the Book:

When Detective Logan Riske goes undercover to find Pepper Yates, a potential link to his best friend’s unsolved murder, he vows to gain her cooperation by any means necessary. But the elusive beauty is more suspicious—and in far more danger—than he expected. And the last thing Logan needs is to start caring for her….Pepper has spent years dodging the corrupt club owner who will stop at nothing to keep her silenced. She can trust no one, not even the handsome new “construction worker” who’s moved in next door. The heat between them is undeniable. But will surrendering to passion bring her the safety she so desires—or will her feelings for Logan draw them both into a killer’s crosshairs?

Hi Lori, congratss for your new book!
I love reading romantic suspense, because the suspense, action, danger and heat from the story. I like the idea about a cop or an agent going undercover then meet the heroine to start the adventure and kick some bad guys. So looking forward to read Logan and Pepper story.

Thank you Lori and Anna for this fantastic interview. Lori, you are a new author for me and in reading this post, you have successfully snagged my interest in reading this series! Like my TBR pile wasn’t big enough!!! 🙂 As one who uses social media to connect with my fave authors, I have to thank you for putting yourself ‘out there’ and allowing your fans to get ‘up close and personal’ with you all, even with the risk inherent in doing so. I’m on so many Street Teams for the writers that I feel very strongly about, and love that opportunity to help out with getting their work seen by Tweeting, sharing on FB, Pinterest and any other means possible. Through social media, I have also become a BETA reader for a few! It truly is so wonderful to interact with all of you on a daily basis, sharing our lives with you and other members of the team.

Thank you for this giveaway. Have a wonderful day.

Thanks for the fun mini-interview! I never thought of authors suffering from identify theft because of social networking but it makes sense – I’m kinda split on the social networking thing in the romance community because I think in the long run it probably does more harm to some authors than benefit. I think people really, really need to filter what they put out there – there’s an abundance of what I like to call “overshare” and it’s actually influenced me in a negative way about buying some books – just a thought. I’m so glad that “Alice” from Trace of Fever is getting her own “heroine” status:) I love when secondary characters I like get their own books! Thanks for the great giveaway!

I like learning about a writer’s writing process. It’s interesting how characters comes to you and that you don’t quite know how they will turn out at the beginning.

  • Yadira A. October 14, 2012 at 1:45 am

I would love to read this story! I’ve seen lots of great reviews on it!

  • Orsi October 14, 2012 at 5:00 am

Undercover cops in a romantic suspense? It sounds very exciting and fun, and it’s good to know some glimpses about a writer’s writing process.

  • QuenKne October 14, 2012 at 3:38 pm

It’s so great to have the opportunity to hear from authors in this type of forum. Like Lori, I have fears about social networking too. It’s sad to think that some people intentionally set out to hurt others.- everyone needs to be careful & cautious.

I love Lori’s books and can’t wait to start reading her new series.
