Holiday Rants or Raves: My (Love)/Hate Relationship with New Year’s Eve

Hey Everyone!

By now you all know how much I love the holidays and what a big Christmas-aholic I am, so it may come as a surprise, but I absolutely HATE New Year’s Eve.

Why? Because it irritates me that everyone *must* party and have fun on December 31st and waving goodbye to the year is an excuse for many people to act crazy/irresponsible/dangerous or outright stupid. Why can’t I have fun on Dec 29 if I feel like it? This whole mandatory have fun just grates on my nerves. *grinds teeth*

And sure, fireworks are pretty, but people getting excited and starting their own home explosives 2 days prior to the big day, scaring all cats and dogs in the neighbourhood, which result in loud barking making it quite impossible to enjoy the holidays or sleep for 3 days non-stop makes it much less fun… *grumbles*

So as much as I LOVE Christmas and wouldn’t mind for it to last at least 2 weeks, I’m not looking forward to New Year’s Eve, it’s clearly the holiday I dislike the most, even more than my birthday (which is a story for another time 😉 ). The only good thing about it is that we don’t have to work, but that’s about it.

But before you say that I’m the grinch of New Year’s Eve, I’ll tell you that I don’t mind celebrating the end of the year and hoping the new one will bring us many good things, in fact for the past couple of years my friends and I have made our own tradition: we are partying and having fun prior to Dec 31, so one night between Dec 28 and 30 we’ll enjoy some together-fun-time and this way we have at least 2 days (Dec 31 and January 1st) to rest and get ready to face the New Year. Actually, one of my best New Year’s Eve was when I stayed home in high school, spent the evening reading Harry Potter, took a long bubble bath, ate some delicious holiday treats and after having watched the midnight fireworks on TV returned to my book 😀

And that’s exactly how I would like to spend New Year’s Eve!

So tell me,

Do you like New Year’s Eve?

What do you usually do: party or spend it quietly at home or with friends?

I’m a stay at home kinda gal. I don’t mind bringing in the New Year responsibly with family and friends. This year I was in bed reading! LOL

Oh, sounds delightful Felicia, my ideal way to spend it 😉

  • Caro The HEA Lover January 2, 2013 at 3:21 pm

I could say the SAME thing about Christmas…everyone *must* gather with family and eat for hours on December 25th 😉
At least with New Year’s Eve I can CHOOSE who I spend my time with, unlike Christmas family reunions =P

I’ve spent New Year’s Eve with friends ever since I was 16 (ugh more than 10 years now). Some of these friends changed from one year to another but I always spend it with my best friend. He’s the only reason I actually keep celebrating when, yes, sometimes I’d rather stay home and read.
For some reason these last couple of years we’ve ended up doing theme parties. One time it was Movie theme, another the 1920s and so on. This year it was the 1960s. We listened to 60s music, played games from that time and yes we were wearing costumes. And it was fun.

No fireworks but we did play with glow in the dark bracelets (<== we're party animals as you can see LOL)

Hm, I have to say that the way you describe it Caro it sounds like you are having a great night with your best friend(s). I would love to do this, but sadly my best friends either go and party like crazy on New Year’s Eve, or stay at home with the bf/parents. Maybe one day, and I love the theme nights idea, must be so much fun! 😀

I’m kinda grinch like when it comes to New Years eve 🙂 I don’t like battling traffic and tipsy drivers. To me, it’s just not worth it. I like looking forward to what the new year brings, but the obligatory parties/drinking/merriment doesn’t mean much other than dealing with people when they’ve had way too much to drink.

I spent my New years eve inside, cuddling with a book and I was just fine with that. Our family usually doesn’t go out.. we’ll stay inside, watch a movie or play music or board games.. stuff like that.

    • Stella January 3, 2013 at 4:56 am

Exactly! I feel the same way you do, and it makes me mad how some family members/friends pity me or look at me weird why I’m not getting drunk and partying ’till dawn…grr

Happy New Year. Unless I have a party to go to, I usually spend New Year’s eve at home and watch the ball drop on TV.

    • Stella January 3, 2013 at 4:57 am

Nothing like welcoming the New Year from our comfy sofas! 😀

  • draconismoi January 2, 2013 at 4:26 pm

I dislike mandatory festivities! So I normally don’t participate. I reschedule holidays all the time. Christmas (on a Tuesday? Bit me), my birthday (which was always falling during finals week), you name it. I celebrate on MY SCHEDULE. And I have made it clear to my friends and family that they have no choice but to comply.

    • Caro The HEA Lover January 3, 2013 at 4:09 am

I wish I had your balls! This would be WAY easier If I could do that too!

    • Stella January 3, 2013 at 4:58 am

Lol, I’m like you Cass! My b-day is on Aug 20th, but due to family vacations we celebrated it whenever we got home or the family got together. One year family life was so busy that we celebrated it on Dec 31, as my mom said I could have only 1 birthday in a year, so we had to celebrate it before the New Year came along, and it was one of my best birthdays! 😀

  • Susan January 3, 2013 at 12:39 am

Totally agree, Stella. I like “celebrations” that are quiet and meaningful, and not forced gaiety (especially with a crowd of strangers) on a prescribed schedule.

But I think I would have settled for the latter this year. This year has been bags o’ fun and I actually ended up spending New Year’s Eve in the ER. (You DO NOT want to be in the ER on New Year’s Eve.) At midnight, my sister and I turned to each other and just said “Happy New Year” to each other and rolled our eyes. Since I also spent Thanksgiving, Christmas, and my birthday in the ER/hospital (not for me), it just nicely rounded out the year. Yay. And, believe it or not, it’s probably not my worst Christmas/New Year in the hospital year (which was the one for myself). Double yay.

    2013 WILL be better.

    • Stella January 3, 2013 at 5:01 am

Aw Susan, sorry to hear your holiday season was set in hospitals, I hope 2013 will be better! And yes, I have nothing against celebrations if I have fun or share it with people I like, but to get drunk just for the sake of the calendar changing digits, I find that stupid…

      • Susan January 3, 2013 at 1:56 pm

        Thank you, Stella.

I confess to some wild partying in my college days, but the allure was short-lived. 🙂

I think there are a lot of people who want a less frenzied way to welcome in the new year, and I’m seeing increasing options for people who do want to go out and celebrate responsibly. In my area, I’ve noted that many communities are trying to make New Year’s Eve more family-oriented with sponsored events so people have a tamer option to the hotel parties and drunken pub-crawl orgies.

        • Stella January 4, 2013 at 4:01 am

Sounds good! Once when we had some French friends over and they wanted to celebrate NYE in street carnival fashion we went downtown and had the scare of my life, with a rowdy crowd, people setting off explosives right next to you accidents were guaranteed to happen. That was a really repulsive experience.

  • miki January 3, 2013 at 8:34 am

i stay at home ( also to protect my cat and dog because with our central postion we got not 1 but 4/5 different fireworks so ye stoo much) i celebrate it with my family quietly.
i woudn’t mind doing it with friends buty i don’t have them ( or they live far far away) but i’m not feeling like partyuing with strangers…. a good meal, a good book or film together and i’m happy

    • Stella January 3, 2013 at 9:27 am

At least you don’t start 2013 exhausted and hungover Miki since you spent a quiet evening at home 😉

  • JenM January 3, 2013 at 10:31 am

For years now, I’ve always gotten together with my group of friends and we’ve spent the evening having a gathering (not really a party) at someone’s house. However, this year, everyone was feeling unmotivated so we all went our separate ways. I spent the evening at home with my spouse and it was really lovely to not have the pressure to go out.

    • Stella January 3, 2013 at 12:31 pm

What matters is that we have a lovely night, IMO it doesn’t matter whether you spend it partying or going to bed early, just that you enjoy it 😀

  • cayenne January 3, 2013 at 10:45 am

I don’t really love New Year’s – too many people & expectations; I’m not really a grinch & I do love my friends, but sometimes even the idea of NYE is tiring. I spent it at home reading and on twitter, with a glass of wine and Star Wars in the background.

    • Stella January 3, 2013 at 12:30 pm

Sounds like you had the perfect night Cayenne! 😀 I agree, why stress and tire yourself when you’ll have to work after only 1 day to get over it? IMO that’s so not enough to start the year and work rested…

  • JessS January 3, 2013 at 7:56 pm

I actually don’t mind New Years, but only if someone else is organising it! I think the fireworks are awesome and super pretty, but then I do live in Sydney so we get very full out ones over the harbour and not usually that many people setting off their own.

    • Stella January 4, 2013 at 3:59 am

Jess I like the big main fireworks as well, the problem is that even while I like looking at the small ones if I see them from my windows, I live in a suburban part of town with houses with gardens and people do their own fireworks which drive the pets crazy and terrifies them. My aunt who lives 3 streets away had to allow her 2 huge dogs inside the house because they kept whining and shivering in panic outside (and once inside they wetted themselves 🙁 )
