Are You Ready for a Trip to Grand Cayman Island?
by Terry Spear

How setting can change a story! Duncan MacNeill is determined to get back the money that a swindler stole from their pack. I could have set the story anywhere—Scotland, England, Germany, Australia! Or anywhere in the US. Or somewhere else.

Grand Cayman BeachSo why Grand Cayman Island? They have the most banks for such a small land mass than any other place in the world. They have more money in many of those banks than any other place in the world. Offshore accounts come to mind? Sometimes the plot requires that the story be set in one place over a million different others.

What made this setting so much fun was it was one place I visited and loved. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing Duncan’s experiences with Shelley’s in the Caribbean island. And my own when I was there. The only thing I regret about my visit was that I didn’t meet Duncan!

You learn little nuances when you are actually in the setting that you might not learn about from doing research from afar. Although I also do much more research to find even more things that I can add to the story to make it fun and real.

For instance, what else exists in the forest on the island? Can you walk a dog on leash there? Any nude bathing allowed on the beaches?

Wolves ever been sighted there? What kind of trees and other vegetation grows in the forest? What kind of birds?

What about the sharks feeding around the island?

sharks-1The man with the briefcase chained to his wrist was real. The excursions were all real, though I had to contact the sunset cruise line to get their menu because I’d forgotten exactly what we had eaten. I couldn’t have envisioned what sitting on the cruise would have been like, positioning of people, what happened afterward, without having been there.

When I arrived at the airport, it took a while to get a taxi because everyone arrived at once. At the hotel, we were given glasses of champagne, while no one else was while we waited in this long line to get checked in. We never knew why we got special treatment, though many looked at us askance, wondering, too. LOL

Somewhere or another, we asked about crime on the island. The shopkeeper said they didn’t have any. Anyone who committed crime on the island ended up in the Jamaica prison and no one wanted to go there.

I would have never known that if I hadn’t been there.

Which means I need to visit new worlds, and revisit old ones to get a “real” feel for the setting. Most places I’ve lived or visited on numerous occasions that I’ve used for my stories. But I really think I need to go to some more fun places!

I hope to go to Scotland next year again. You know, to learn if there are more hunky Highland wolves out there!

Does anyone want to go and be my research assistant? Anyone have any questions for me concerning the series?

Thanks so much for dropping by and saying hi! Hope you love A Howl for a Highlander!!!

Hi Terry, congratulations on the release of HOWL FOR A HIGHLANDER.
I haven’t read “werewolf series” yet, but I do like highlander stories (ahem, men in kilt :D) and werewolves. So, I’m gonna look out your books.
I wish I could have a gateaway to that island. ^^

  • Dian Setyarini February 8, 2013 at 7:36 am

A highlander and werewolf as one, that’s yummy story. Congrats for the release 🙂

  • Diane February 8, 2013 at 8:24 am

I’ve read this series and very much enjoyed. Have you any ideas how many books there will be in it? And what about your new series?

  • laurie goudge February 8, 2013 at 8:38 am

Congratulations on the release! Looking forward to reading it 😉

  • Terry Spear February 8, 2013 at 8:48 am

Way late getting here!!! Thanks so much for dropping in, ladies! 🙂 Trying to get the word out about being here!

Viki, thanks so much!!! I’m thrilled you’re loving the series! Enjoy one hot Highlander! But wait, there’s more! Cearnach will get his in A Highland Werewolf Wedding next!!!

LZZ, thanks! I wish so too. It was an easy flight and not too expensive. But the cost of accommodations and food was. Now if I could have shared it with a hunky wolf—no problem!!!

    Dian, thanks! Yes, definitely yummy!

Diane, not sure. I still want to go back and revisit the Arctic wolf pack. And I’d love to do something more with Heart of the Wolf’s pack. I had started a story and put it on hold. But I also had fun with adding a new element in the Silver Town wolf pack story (Silence of the Wolf)…and who knows? I might even add a cougar–the furry kind–or two. On the new jaguar series, so far there are 4 contracted. But I’ve got two male cousins I need to find mates for, so if everyone is loving the series…I’ll try to write those also. 🙂

Thanks so much, Laurie! I was excited about having 4 books out this year!!!

  • Loretta February 8, 2013 at 9:34 am

Finished reading A Howl for a Highlander and loved the story. Enjoyed all the water fun and adventure. What I enjoy the most is the strength of the women in your books. How your ALPHA males want to protect there mates at all cost but also admire their strength and courage. Last but not least waterfalls no matter the size of the falls they are so much fun!

  • erinf1 February 8, 2013 at 11:06 am

Congrats to Terry on the new release! This book has definitely caught my interest 🙂

  • Joy F February 8, 2013 at 11:49 am

Book sounds great and its #10. What keeps you motivated and having enough stories to keep the series going for so long?

    • Terry Spear February 8, 2013 at 12:12 pm

Erin, thanks so much!! It was definitely fun to write! And that’s the main thing…is to have fun in telling the story!!!

Joy, one word: Readers! I have so many fan requests for certain characters, and the stories just have to be written. When I wrote To Tempt the Wolf, so many fans had a love/hate relationship with Meara, Hunter’s sister. I did too. 🙂 But I was inundated with requests to see her story. I hadn’t planned on it! So I kept pondering it, and when my editor mentioned something about Hunter being part of a whole wolf SEAL team, I had the story. One of Hunter’s SEALs, Finn, also had some history with Meara. They were perfect together in A SEAL in Wolf Clothing. 🙂

O yes, I would love to be your research assistant! Thank you for the gorgeous pictures, they really give me a holiday feeling. Good luck with the new release, it sure sounds like a winner. Paranormal romantic suspense, love it. (International).

    • Terry Spear February 8, 2013 at 4:35 pm

Lily, thanks so much, Lily! It was. It was the hot time of year there so it was off-season. The prices weren’t though. But we sure enjoyed it.

Aurian, LOL, see you could be scribbling notes for me while I was talking to the hot wolf. 🙂 Thanks so much! Makes you want to be there!

  • Sandy Lion February 8, 2013 at 6:28 pm

I love the books that you write and the sexy male leads they portray. I like both the wolves and jajuar series you are currently writing. sdylion(at)gmail(dot)com

    • Terry Spear February 9, 2013 at 7:41 am

Thanks, Sandy! What could be better on an island paradise, but to enjoy it with a hunky Highland WOLF, eh? Unless it was a sexy jaguar shifter. Sure, that could work! 🙂

Jess, thanks! Where were you when I needed someone to go to the Amazon with me??? I couldn’t get one taker. Now, Scotland, yes. 🙂

  • Diane Sallans February 8, 2013 at 9:09 pm

Grand Caymen Island sounds incredible, and so awesome as a setting. I’m so jealous that you’ve been there, and would *so* sign up to be a research assistant.

  • Joanne B February 14, 2013 at 11:00 am

Congrats on the new release. A Howl For A Highlander sounds fantastic. Can’t wait to read it. I can’t believe this is book 10 already. You just keep cranking these great stories out. Any idea how many more will be in the series? I wouldn’t mind taking a trip to Grans Cayman Island. Looks beautiful.

    • Terry Spear February 14, 2013 at 11:28 am

Thanks, Joanne! I think back to when I sold Heart of the Wolf and never ever had any idea I’d be writing the 10th book in the series. 🙂 Thirteen wolf books are written, and I’ve got another to write, and working on a 3rd jaguar book! 🙂

    • Terry Spear February 14, 2013 at 1:47 pm

Yeah, you say that and then a SEAL wolf would be there blocking your way and then what?

  • Loretta February 14, 2013 at 12:12 pm

Would love to be your research assistant! I do have personal knowledge regarding alpha wolves. First hand experience in handling them. Please chose me. <3

    • Terry Spear February 14, 2013 at 12:50 pm
