Today we are very happy to welcome Zoë Archer on Book Lovers Inc!  Join us to celebrate the release of Sinner’s Heart, the 3rd book in her Hellraisers series. If you haven’t read this series yet, here is your chance to win a copy! This is a series you don’t want to miss.  Let’s give a warm welcome to Zoë!

When thinking of historical Britain, most people’s minds run anywhere from the castles of the Middle Ages, to wild elegance of the 18th century, all the way to the strict propriety of the Victorian period. Not too many people think about the England that predated all of this. Roman Britain.

In 55 BCE., Julius Caesar made his first invasion of Britain. His forays, however, didn’t last long nor achieve much. Nearly a century later, Rome tried again, and this time, they were much more successful. Though the entirety of the British Isles were never under Roman rule, Rome did occupy a considerable part of Britain for several hundred years. And the Romans left their mark on the people and the land.

The city we now know as London was first called Londinium by the Romans, a small settlement that, by the second century CE, Tacitus called a place “filled with traders and a celebrated center of commerce.” Other major British cities also began as Roman colonies—or, at least, became much larger under Romance influence—including Eboracum (York), Glevum (Gloucester), and Aquae Sulis (Bath).

Many of these settlements had all the conveniences and qualities of the finest Roman towns, including forums, public baths, gladiator arenas, paved streets, and running water. Some houses even had heated floors. And while many homes had their own personal shrines, temples were built to worship the gods, attended by priests and priestesses.

Valeria Livia Corva, the heroine of SINNER’S HEART, was once a priestess in Rome, and then traveled all the way to Britain to serve in the temples of Londinium. What brought her so far from home? Not the desire to expand the empire, but her own hunger for knowledge and power. She came to Britain to take as much of its magic for herself as she could, and when she first arrived, there was much magic to be found. In her greed for even more power, she summons the greatest evil, and begins a terrible chain of events that will cause her to make the ultimate sacrifice.

I can hear you now. “But, Zoë, didn’t you say that Livia is the heroine of SINNER’S HEART? How can she be the heroine if she sacrificed herself? And if the book is set in 1763, how could Livia—a woman alive in Roman Britain—be in the story, even if she hadn’t given up her life?”

All very good questions! It’s not a spoiler to say that Livia is a ghost. Yet she’s a powerful ghost, one who isn’t content to just rattle chains and make desolate moans. Thank goodness that Livia has strength of her own, because she’s got to convince Bram, the most wicked member of the Hellraisers, to give up his Devil-given magic and his dissolute ways, and join the fight against the world’s greatest evil. And just because she’s a specter doesn’t mean that there isn’t a volatile attraction between her and Bram, either.

Roman Britain gradually collapsed within a few hundred years of its establishment. But Livia found a way to endure. Now she just has to make sure that the world doesn’t wind up literally going to hell, with Bram as her most powerful ally—or most dangerous enemy.

My question to you is, would you like to visit Roman Britain? What would be the attraction there that would most interest you? Leave a comment, and you could win a copy of SINNER’S HEART.

Book synopsis:

SINNER’S HEART

The Hellraisers, Book 3

Demons Of The Past
Abraham Stirling, Lord Rothwell, was a fighter once, a soldier in the Colonies. But Bram returned to London with more nightmares than tales of glory. Now he drowns his senses in the arms of countless women, while his friends, the Hellraisers, ensure he needn’t sin alone.
Until, that is, the Devil himself grants them each a wish, undoing their camaraderie as they explore their wicked powers. Bram finds himself magically bound to Valeria Livia Corva, the sensuous priestess who raised the Devil the first time–and died to send the demon back.
She may be a ghost, but Livia is no angel. The raw passion she witnesses in Bram’s memories isn’t much different from her behavior when she had a body to enjoy. But it doesn’t make it any easier to convince Bram to become a warrior again, lest all London burn. And the fierce desires reawakening within her might just start the blaze. . .

Yes, I would love to visit Roman Britain! I want to explore all the people who came to trade or live there, since it was such a center of activity–how’d they all get along?

Roman Britain has always fascinated me. Trivia: It was the only Roman province ever allowed to leave the Empire w/o armed struggle. By the time the Romanized Brits wrote the Emperor, begging to be cut loose so they could devote their money to self-defense, the Empire was on the wane.

There’s a small section of the original Roman wall visible at the Tower of London (among a few other places.) When we visited the Tower a few years ago, I was SO thrilled to see it – I pointed it out to Diva. “Look! The Roman wall! THE actual, original, wall built by the Romans! How freaking cool is that??”

But she was all “I wanna go see the armor and weaponry!!” Kids.

Roman Britain would have been quite turbulent at times I imagine. Just a quick visit I think, when Rome would have been at it’s height.

    Hi Zoe!
I love your books, and right now I read Devil’s Kiss. I’m fascinated with how you portray them. They do look exotic compare with the British noble. I always curious to know if maybe Arthur is actually Roman soldier and not just a legend. I would love to visit the Roman Britain, learn about their culture and especially their myth and legend
