Book Lovers Book Club: Discussion Questions – Soulless by Gail Carriger

Filed in Book Lovers Book Club , The Winged Lover Posted on July 22, 2013 @ 7:00 am 7 comments

Morning everyone,

Today I’ve decided to discuss Soulless by Gail Carriger with a few questions to kick start your brains this Monday morning.

You can see my review of Soulless here.

Given the opportunity to become a clavinger or drone, would you do it? Why/Why not?

Alexia doesn’t mind destroying the vampire at the beginning of Soulless, was it because of the badly tied cravat or his destruction of her precious treacle tart? What dessert is worth killing over?

The comedic tone of the novel was ever present even when the novel was at it’s darkest plot-threads. Do you think this added to the depth of the novel and characters or did it trivialize the plot?

Comedy is sprinkled all throughout Soulless, even during the darkest times. Does this deepen the story or just downplay the seriousness of the situation?

Will you be reading Changeless?

Don’t forget to vote for next months book here.

And also to enter your reviews into the Top Reviewer contest here.

If you would also like to discuss Royal Assassin in the comments feel free. Will you be reading Assassin’s Quest?

I have read and loved all the books in this series. I wrote my review of this one november 2011. Does it count?
No I don’t want to be a clavinger or drone, as I don’t want to be turned, thank you very much. The vampire was attacking her, that is why she killed it. Or perhaps it killed itself because it kept touching her. But I have never had treacle tart as far as I know, and it does sound delicious.

I am not a big fan of steampunk, but I just love Gail Carriger’s writing voice and her characters. Her particular dry and overall practical sense of humor gets to me, like the over the top ones don’t.

I do add my recommendation to those who have not yet tasted those books.

So do you never want to be turned as in ever or just in Carrigers version of vampire world?

Steampunk is hit or miss for me, but I enjoyed this series. There were some ups and downs, with some books being stronger than others, but Soulless started things off well. I’d definitely recommend Soulless and the rest of the series to other readers.

Alexia liked her meals and comforts! I don’t really know what treacle tart is, but it sounds like something Victorians would eat, doesn’t it? I don’t know that it would be my primary reason for killing a vampire, and I don’t think it was Alexia’s either–but it sure wouldn’t put her in a charitable frame of mind.

If done right, humor can really enhance an otherwise serious book. (I hestitate to use serious with this series, but you know what I mean.) This would have been a very different book–and not a better one–without the humor.

As much as I enjoyed these books, this wasn’t a world I’d particularly care to live in, and certainly not as either as a drone or a clavinger. But the drones are better-dressed, so that’s a plus there.

Sorry–I haven’t started the Hobb books yet. I bought them, and they’re definitely on my TBR list, but I just haven’t gotten there yet. 🙁

i think treacle is very sticky…maybe like american toffee? or sticky caramel.

does sound quite nice though, i’d be afraid of what it might mean for my teeth

Does it count if I have already read the entire series?
