Around The Bookish World: Week-In-Review

Welcome to this week’s news post! In this edition we have news of  Kobo’s new generation of tablets and ereaders as well new expansion in indie stores, J.D. Sallinger’s rumoured unpublished novels and much more!

Kobo is not playing around with producing new tablets and ereaders. This week they announced a whole new slew of range of tablets and ereaders to be released. Following on from their Aura HD model, Kobo has updated a slim-line model which is much lighter but at a higher price for the frontlit ereader. But the surprising announcement is that they will also be producing a much more expensive tablet (the 10 inch model)  for $3.99 which is the most expensive tablet from the online dedicated bookseller yet. While the HD Aura 7 inch tablets will range from $150 to $249.99.

Kobo has also stated that customers could buy digital books via a new app which will be available in their tablets  and ereading devices. This will allow readers to order ebooks from their local or online indies who have signed up for this new scheme such as Diesel ebooks.

There were rumours that J.D Sallinger who died in 2010,  had unpublished manuscripts which may or may not be published but a film-maker who is producing a documentary on the life and works on the acclaimed author has claimed that there will be five books to be released in 2015. Some of the works are  new while others expand on already published books, but at the moment Sallinger’s estate is remaining tight-lipped on this claim.

With the current spates of YA movie adaptation flops, the most recent THE IMMORTAL INSTUMENTS: CITY OF BONES, failing to reach expectations, it is not surprising that sales for YA and childrens books  has dropped 27%  – whether this is a reflection of a long-term trend remains to be seen. But I think the rise of New Adult may be a factor which has grown in popularity in the past year.

News in Brief:

Amazon has opened up a Kindle store in Mexico (I suspect in 20 years they will have a store based in most of the globe). This will also make things very easy for Mexican self published authors to release their books on the Kindle platform.

Larissa Ione has posted some upcoming info on the future direction in her DEMONICA series.

Sourcebooks has purchased online retailer Simple Truths which distributes and sells inspirational DVDs, books and music which will also now become an imprint of the publisher which will help to sell the publisher’s catalogue of backlist and upcoming books.

Upcoming books to watch out for!

In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what’s left of the modern world.

When a group of people capture Penryn’s sister Paige, thinking she’s a monster, the situation ends in a massacre. Paige disappears. Humans are terrified. Mom is heartbroken.

Penryn drives through the streets of San Francisco looking for Paige. Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angels’ secret plans where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.

Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can’t rejoin the angels, can’t take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?

This cover just drew me in as well as the premise which I am a total sucker for!  SALVAGE is out later next year.

I’m a little disappointed City of Bones didn’t do better at the box office, but I’m sure a lot of people are questioning how it will transition from novel to big screen. I loved the series myself and thought it was extremely well written. Looking at the upcoming new releases, I can’t wait to read Deathsworn by Leah Cypress.
