Bookish Rants or Raves: It’s Raining Kick-Ass Men!?!?

Small_Favor_thumbI read a post on Wicked Little Pixie’s blog by the Queen B (you can check out the post  HERE) where she talks about Urban Fantasy, more specifically about the scarce number of Male protagonists in UF. She also mentions that the word on the grapevine is that, and I quote: “writers writing male leads in UF are not being picked up by publishers. Even if the stories are good. What I’m hearing is that they don’t really want men, and they especially don’t want the male protagonist to be bisexual or gay.”
I couldn’t help but take advantage of my little bi-weekly feature and put on my two cents in this whole deal.
I have to admit that I am very ambivalent in this whole thing. On one side I am all for the Kick-Ass men of Urban Fantasy, bring on Dresden, Felix Castor, Simon Canderous and any other you might think of. But on the other side, I have a confession to make, I have only read one series with a male protagonist and only one book of that series…
I have to be honest and I don’t know why, but I do feel more drawn towards UF books that have female protagonists. I guess there is something about being easier to relate to my own gender and all.
I did enjoy Storm Front, the first in the Dresden Files series and I have bought all the other books in the series, along with other books with male protagonists. I also LOVE me some M/M romance and really enjoy the male POVs in the Paranormal Romance genre.
That being said, I believe that my reticence with digging into UF series and novels with male leads is all about prejudice in a female dominated genre, in my humble opinion.
I want to make a pledge here and now, that I will from now on be more open minded and make an effort to read Urban Fantasy Books and series that have male heroes as protagonists.
Now, I want to know how you all feel about this…
Do you read/enjoy UF books with male protagonists? why/why not?
Oh, and please write up any good books or series in the UF genre with male leads that you have read! I’d love to get some recommendations as well! =)
I can’t wait to hear read what you have to say =)

I freaking LOVE Harry Dresden! Love him to pieces!
I have no problem at all with reading about kick ass men…it's often more fun than women heroines!

But I have to admit that I don't know many great series with a male hero…o_O
    Harry Dresden is amazing!

I have never read one! I wonder what I am missing

This is not a UF rec, I have never read a UF (sorry!) but one of the best leading male protagonists with his own series is C.S. Harris's gorgeous, difficult, brilliant, compelling, passionate Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin.

This is a series of mysteries set in Regency England. Book 1 is WHAT ANGELS FEAR.

Oh my, I'm not entirely sure! I'm so used to female protagonists!

I might be prejudice. I started UF with Mercedes Lackey (elves designing race cars, etc.) Loved it . Then discovered Tanya Huff, Kelley Armstrong, Kim Harrisson, Charlaine Harris, and so may others, that I find myself mostly following the female author. I did enjoy Jes Batis' books. I thought Rob Thurman was male when I first started her Leandro's series, only to discover otherwise. She is still one of my favorites. I couldn't get into Jim Butcher — maybe because the Syfy series came first in my experience. I am open to recommendations of male authors, but there are so very many good frmales out there…

I thought the same about Rob Thurman! hehe

and I forgot that i had read her Cal and Leandros series… Its a great one and has Male leading men as protagonists =)))

I quite like the Nightside books by Simon R. Green which has a male lead character: John Taylor.

I read Queen B's post, and I have to say, I had the same reaction. I guess I am somewhat prejudiced against male protags in UF. The problem is that I'm that way in mainstream books also and even in music – I tend to prefer female singers. Uh-oh, I really need to make more of an effort here. I have the first Harry Dresden book, maybe I need to move it to the top of my TBR.
