Interview: Author Nicole Peeler + Giveaway

Filed in Giveaways , Interview , Nicole Peeler , The HEA Lover Posted on July 1, 2010 @ 3:00 pm 37 comments
Today we are very happy to welcome Nicole Peeler, author of the Jane True series on Book Lovers,Inc. Her new book Tracking the Tempest was released earlier this week. (I am in love with her book covers!) Let’s give Nicole a warm welcome!

The HEA Lover: First can we call you Nicole or do you prefer Dr. Peeler?

Nicole: Everywhere outside of the classroom I’m Nicole. But some people enjoy calling me Dr. Peeler. I think it’s because I don’t look anything like a serious professor.

The HEA Lover: For everyone who doesn’t know you: tell us a bit about yourself?

Nicole: I grew up outside of Chicago, but left for college. I’ve lived all over the place and I love to travel. Right at this second, I’m living in Louisiana, but I’m just about to move to Pennsylvania to teach at Seton Hill, in their MFA in Popular Fiction course. I’m very excited. I just became a writer, and it’s been an amazing ride! To find out more, you can visit me on Facebook, or at nicolepeeler.com, or tweet with me on Twitter. πŸ™‚

The HEA Lover: What do you think is the difference between a reader and a real Book Lover?

Nicole: I think a REAL book lover is someone for whom books are their ultimate pleasure. If they have a day off, they don’t think, “Oh, good, I can finally watch that movie,” they think, “Awesome. I can read.” I look forward to having time to read the way other people look forward to vacations. πŸ™‚

The HEA Lover: Describe a typical day of writing? Are you a planner or pantser?

Nicole: I’m a total planner. I approach my books like I did my PhD thesis: research, outline, research, write. It’s the only way I could do it.

The HEA Lover: I’m following you on Twitter and let me tell you, you are hilarious! You often talk about your students in College, what is their reaction when they realize you’re living a double life? I would have loved finding my professors on Twitter.

Nicole: Most of them don’t really know, because I don’t teach creative writing at my current job. At LSUS, I taught Modernism. That said, it’s going to be a lot different, I think, at my new job, where I was hired as an author. But right now most of my students don’t know. As for the ones that do now, some think it’s REALLY cool. But others assume I’m selling my book out of the trunk of my car.

The HEA Lover: Your new Release Tracking the Tempest is book 2 in the Jane True series: Could you summarize the series for us please…in rhymes? (yeah we’re THAT perverse)
Nicole:

Ryu gives Jane True a present,
Which brings her to his world.
There she’s attacked like a pheasant,
By a baddie who will make your hair curl.

Ummmm . . . how was that? MOVE OVER JOHN DONNE! Rock star.

The HEA Lover: Can you give us 3 reasons why people should read your books?

Nicole: Sassy, sexy, snarky. πŸ™‚ Three reasons WITH alliteration!

The HEA Lover: Okay what we were all wondering: why did you come up with Selkies?

Nicole: I’ve always loved the mythology, and it worked really well with the type of protagonist I wanted to write. I wanted Jane vulnerable: no daughter of a vampire or a werewolf would be vulnerable. But the daughter of a seal? Perfect.

The HEA Lover: Why did you choose this rather hard background for your heroine? Not only is Jane losing her mother but also being responsible, more or less, for the death of her boyfriend.

Nicole: I wanted Jane to represent human strength, rather than supernatural strength. As humans, we live with death and loss in a way that immortal characters don’t. I know so many amazing women who have survived such tragedies, and survived with grace and dignity that inspires me. I wanted to do homage to such women, who I think are the true heroes.

The HEA Lover: After all the exciting action in Tempest Rising: what can we expect of Tracking the Tempest?

Nicole: Tracking is a lot faster paced and a lot more action packed than TR. In the first book, Jane is really a sitting duck. She’s just been tossed into this supernatural society, and she’s lost. In the second book, she’s begun to find her feet. By the time we get to Tempest’s Legacy, the third book, she’s really rocking out.

The HEA Lover: Can you give as hint about how the relationship between Ryu, Anyan and Jane will develop? *puppy eyes* I am rooting for Anyan just so you know.

Nicole: I am a spoiler free zone, but I can assure you that there is much to be developed between both Jane and Ryu, AND Jane and Anyan.

The HEA Lover: How many books are you planning for this series?

Nicole: I’ve just sold the next three books–Jane True books 4, 5, and 6–and that will complete Jane’s story. But I’ve got plans for all sorts of spin offs. The brain pan is always working. πŸ˜‰

The HEA Lover: Hypothetical question to get a feel of your characters…What if Jane had to write a test about English poetry tomorrow and didn’t do a think for it till now?

Nicole: I don’t think Jane would be that kind of student. I think she’d be super conscientious and a bit of a nerd. Not like me, at all. πŸ˜‰

The HEA Lover: What is up next in your schedule?

Nicole: This summer, I’m writing book 4, moving to Pittsburgh, and traveling to the following places: Chicago, London, Maine, Denver, and Seattle. Should be interesting! I think I’ll need a vacation after my vacation.

The HEA Lover: Thanks so much for taking the time to answer our questions!

Nicole: Thanks to you! It’s been a pleasure.

I had a comment & then I got a 404 error when I submitted it. So if this shows up 2x, it's not my fault.

Anyway, I had this really great comment but I don't remember most of it.

Any chance you'll be coming by/through NC?

And since you plan each book so carefully, do you also have all 6 books planned in detail? Or do you have a general idea and fill in the details as you plan each book?

  • Bethany C. July 1, 2010 at 4:24 pm

I haven't read the first one yet (but I will, promise!) so I really appreciate the spoiler free zone. I do not heart spoilers. I've heard all good stuff about Jane, though!

  • stacey July 1, 2010 at 4:40 pm

Tempest Rising is one of my fave reads of the year! Jane True is my absolute fave heroine…she's hilarious and spunky and can be such a total dork (in the most endearing way) at times. I want to win this SO bad!!

I would like to ask what exactly are you a doctor of?
What subject totally unconnected to writing or literature would you like to study?

Hey Nicol! my question is writing related.
I've been working on a book for three years now. It's been going through constant revisions and edits… and I love it dearly!
    I can't imagine giving up on it…
but when do you know that you should? That maybe the book isn't going anywhere.
Of course, I'd like to believe that it IS definitely going somewhere! I mean, three years of bantering with my characters and getting to know my story?

  • Jenny N. July 3, 2010 at 7:23 pm

  • JenM July 3, 2010 at 11:35 pm

I agree 100% with Nicole's comment about readers vs. book lovers. I have about 150 hours of TV on my Tivo right now, but whenever I have spare time, I immediately open my book. I've finally given up and started deleting shows unwatched.

  • mbreakfield July 4, 2010 at 1:50 am

I'm putting this book on my wishlist, because I really enjoy snarky.
