Book Blurb:
Meghan Chase used to be an ordinary girl…until she discovered that she is really a faery princess. After escaping from the clutches of the deadly Iron fey, Meghan must follow through on her promise to return to the equally dangerous Winter Court with her forbidden love, Prince Ash. But first, Meghan has one request: that they visit Puck–Meghan’s best friend and servant of her father, King Oberon–who was gravely injured defending Meghan from the Iron Fey.

Yet Meghan and Ash’s detour does not go unnoticed. They have caught the attention of an ancient, powerful hunter–a foe that even Ash may not be able to defeat….

My Thoughts:

First, I have to disclaim that I have already read The Iron Daughter (Iron Fey, #2), so I knew where the story was going, the minute I picked up Winter’s Passage…That being said, I wanted to read Winter’s Passage, the free novella that Julie Kagawa put out, because frankly, this is really the only series I enjoy, that deals with fairies anyway! Well, there might be one more…but still, it’s my favorite fairy series!

Winter’s Passage picks up right where The Iron King leaves off, giving the reader an “all access pass” to what happens behind the scenes when Ash comes to take Meghan off to The Winter Court, and Queen Mab.

Though I usually find, short stories and novella’s, to short, and steer clear of them, I am glad I picked up Winter’s Passage!

It’s like any novella, it’s short, at only 51 pages, but because this book is by one of the best YA Lit. writers out there today it’s, amazingly, not missing a thing!

Julie, in her own demanding way, grabs our attention, with her elegant prose, and poignantly real characters. Much the same way she did with The Iron King – her writing is amazingly detailed, each scene playing out like that of a movie; details hidden to most authors are explored, in vibrant, explosive detail…giving the reader just enough to be able to picture each moment, but not so much as to bog down the deliciousness of the story.

I must take a minute here to gush on Ash…I am, to some of your dismay I am sure, an Ash fan – Puck is amazing, in his own wondrous, and silly ways…but I feel about him, much the same way I do about Jacob; he’s a great friend, an “older brother” or confident…he’s not the man for Meghan, at least in my mind…her heart does not explode with passion beyond any reason when she thinks of him; yes she loves him…but, at least for this reviewer, it’s Team Ash all the way.

With all that being said…Winter’s Passage gives us a HUGE window into Ash’s soul, and gives us very solid reason’s why he is, the way he is, in The Iron Daughter…trust me on this one! Ash, is as passionate as ever in Winter’s Passage…he’s the kind of character that you feel for, root for, even when you know, deep down inside, maybe you shouldn’t.

Bottom Line – A solid, beautiful, addition to the Iron Fey Series, one I am THRILLED to have read, even though I already have read The Iron Daughter. The action was there, as were the finely crafted details that Julie has become known for. If you have not started The Iron Fey series yet, now’s your chance, pick up The Iron King and then Winter’s Passage today, I guarantee you, you will not be sorry! I give Winter’s Passage a 4 bookies, and it’s only 4 because I wanted more…I can’t WAIT for The Iron Queen, why must February of 2011 be so far away?

I give Winter’s Passage (Iron Fey, #1.5) 4 out of 5 bookies.
