Catscapades or Details of a Catfight by Gini Koch + Giveaway

Filed in Blogoversary , Gini Koch , Giveaways , Guest Post , The Latin Lover Posted on January 20, 2011 @ 7:00 am 62 comments

One of the past year’s sensations has been Gini Koch‘s mindblowing debut novel to the the Kitty Katt series: Touched by an Alien. It provoked hyperventilation, incoherent rambling, fanning and sighing over Martini and Christopher, and of course contagious laughter. We Book Lovers all went nuts with our enthusiasm and love for this series, these characters, novels and this extraordinary author, so it went without saying that we absolutely wanted to have Gini over at BLI to introduce her to anyone who might not have yet read her books (seriously are there any of you like that?!) or just brighten your day.

Martini, Kitty and Christopher didn’t get the spotlight this time as the Kitty Brigade usurped it. Read on for more and for your chance to win.

My Fur-Filled Life by Gini Koch

I was supposed to write a blog post to help celebrate Book Lovers INC.’s blogoversary. And I wanted to, I really did.
It’s just that I have a problem. A problem of my own choosing, as the hubs likes to remind me. You see…I have pets. And my pets seem to know when I’m on deadline. And do their damndest to ensure I have as much pressure and stress as possible to so that I really relish the accomplishment of completing something, anything.
I was all set to be clever and really impress everyone with my sparkling wit. And then, our daughter, the chicklet, discovered that she’s become allergic to cats.
Keep in mind that we already have two cats and three dogs. We are not lacking in the furred beast department. The chicklet, however, had felt the need for her own cats. Two of them, a brother and sister. All our pets are rescues, so, really, how could we refuse to let her rescue these two adorable fluffy kittens?
Bottom line, we couldn’t. Other bottom line, yeah, we’re idiots.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, naturally, we now have the kittens. Big kittens, it must be said. Well, one of them is big. The other is tiny. But they’re like nine months old, so while still babies, they’re not helpless. Not by a long shot.

The Canine Death Squad (consisting of Li’l Leader, The Spotted Fiend, and Big Baby) are fine with the new additions. They love their cats, Big Baby, in particular. He just wants to be a kitty snuggle-bug, their beloved canine playmate. Of course, they merely use him as a play thing. Which confuses Big Baby to no end.

He’s also gotten used to being the baby, and now there are two new babies, clearly younger than he is. Big Baby has spent a lot of time whining and acting even more babyish in the hopes that we’ll remember that he is the Baby Supreme.
But that’s all easily handled with lots of pets while watching “Castle” and extra dog biscuits. No, it’s not the dogs that are the issue. It’s the Killer Kitties who are creating challenges — they need to determine if they had new Enforcers or Targets on their paws.
Dementia Kitty is old, fat, mean and generally hates every other animal in existence, so her position was never in doubt. Mr. Fluffykins however, who is truly Master of All He Surveys, is the deciding factor.

He was displeased for many days, meaning The Interlopers had to be sequestered so Mr. F could go in and out and about his merry way as he pleased and, hopefully, not kill or drive off the kittens. This lasted about three or four days, until the hubs and I realized we weren’t sleeping because the room the kittens were sequestered in is, essentially, an echo chamber, and the kittens are, like their new Mommy Cat, night people.

Spidercat, aka Lapcat, aka The Prince of Purrsia, is a beautiful boy. Sweet, loving, adorable. He’s also decided that Mr. F is his hero and he wants to be just like him…you know, Mommy Cat’s favorite. This is a problem, because if there’s one thing Mr. F is, it’s totally a loving, possessive, jealous, demanding, one woman cat who will brook no competition for said woman’s affections, particularly from other felines. (Okay, the truth’s now out there. Jeff Martini is based not on a person, but on my cat. You heard it here, folks.)
The other kitten, Squirrel, is, basically, a spaz. It was Squirrel or Hammie for her name (from “Over the Hedge”) because not only does she look like a squirrel, she acts like one, too. A totally spastic, hyper, scaredycat squirrel.
Basically, this addition of feline bodies means that all I’ve been doing is readjusting a schedule that, heretofore, had been running like clockwork, breaking up catfights, filling food bowls, cleaning up water — because Squirrel likes to splash it out of the bowl to drink it from the floor or use her paw like a spoon, that’s why — reassuring neurotic dogs that they’re still beloved, and generally catering hand and foot to the whims of creatures unable to operate a can opener. Sadly, it hasn’t meant writing.
In addition to total schedule disruption, any time I so much as look at, let alone pet, one of the kittens, Mr. F looks ready to show that he’s got the Ninja moves and kill anything and everything around him. This is not my preferred situation, especially when I’m in bed, with the cats on top of me, in the middle of the night. Then you want snuggling, not Ninja vs. Sumo vs. the Karate Kids. It’s been like Feline Mixed Martial Arts more often than not.
But finally, somehow, quietly and without warning, detente has been achieved! No idea how, but suddenly Dementia Kitty was shrieking at the kittens far less and Mr. F was playing with them. Rejoicing abounds. And it only took three weeks of total dedication on my part.

So, that’s why there’s no witty, relevant blog post from me. All I can say to the fine folks at Book Lovers Inc. is: Congratulations, Happy Birthday, Mazel Tov, keep up the good work, and yes, this really IS my blog post.
Now, excuse me. I have to go dangle some string and toss the catnip mouse.

    I'm a pig person myself I must say 😉
Seriously: pigs are intelligent and nice. And have you ever felt a pig's snout? It's softer than the softest cat-pelt/fur.

Love, love, love Gini's Alien books.

As for pets–I get how they can rule your home. We recently got another ferret. Did Hubby and I want another ferret? No! Did daughter bring home a ferret as her birthday present from (no-longer-living-in-the-house) older brother? Yep. Our sweet, 17-year old dog didn't want a ferret in the house, either. She looked at us like, "Why do you keep making these stupid mistakes that wake me from my nap?" Oh well.

Great post! My husband & I have a tricolor Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy named Geisha. She is boy crazy and is seriously in love with my husband. I have to ignore her occasional humping of my husband's arm. When he leaves for a business trip she pines for him like Penelope in The Odyssey. LOL

lol! not a cat fan, but that curious cat photo is to die for! I am a dog person. My husband and I use to show our dogs in agility and obedience. I have more stories than you can shake a stick at, or throw .
here is one: my husband was at his first obedience trial with our Siberian Husky, Drake (the dog from hell). He called the dog "front" (the dog is in a sit stay at one end of the ring and you call it, it runs and sits right in front of you and waits, ideally). The dog ran to the judge (who is in the ring) and stuck his noes in the mans crotch, hard. Needless to say Drake did not qualify at that trial .

I am a cat and dog person. One morning a few years ago, I got up really early to go pay our cable bill. Since no one was up yet, I took our very old husky, Wolf with me. I left my window down a bit, it was early spring, and not hot at all. I was in their office for about 5 minutes. I came back to find my window down and Wolf gone. I turned around and saw a young woman with a child holding Wolf's leash. I said, Wolf, what have you done? He immidiately dropped down, and covered his face. She told me she saw the whole thing. He jumped out, jumped into a converable parked next to me, and tried to go into the bakery next door. He was quite a character.

I love all animals but i am a Cat person. I am a Leo and a Tiger so I'm have way there from the get go. I love the independence of cats. Mine have always been independent but cuddly with me.
The cat I had when I was a teenager used to sit on the back of the chair wrapped around my neck. One day I was eating yogurt and she wanted some so I held out the spoon and let her lick away. Guess I wasn't fast enough on refilling the spoon. She turned to my face and dragged (didn't bite) her teeth across the bridge of my nose. She got her yogurt much faster after that.

    Love you books!

I must admit to being a cat person although my son and husband are both allergic to cats. We do have a little dog though and tons of stuffed kitties.

I want to thank Larissa for turning me onto this series. I am reading 'Alien Tango' right now and LOVE it.

I am more of a cat person and my boyfriend is a dog person Much debate has happened trying to decide which to have as a pet.
A few years ago I went to the local pet shelter to adopt a kitten. I saw this adorable orange tabby and when I picked him up he grabbed my face with his paws and bit my nose. I instantly fell in love.

First, I have to wave maniacally at Jessica and Sully!!!!! hi!!!!!
Next, I already have this one. I stalk. But, I have to play!
I love cats, am cat lady. Right now I'm in fierce negotiations to get two cats. My DH is against the idea. So, my evil backup plan is to go rescue two balls of fur, with the kids and tell my 3 and 6 year old it was all Daddy's idea because he loves them sooooo much.
What do you think? Divorce court or get what I want as usual?

  • Melissa (Books and Things) January 20, 2011 at 3:44 pm

Love this post. I also love both. However, I am more a dog person these days. Mostly because I wouldn't trust my malamute with a kitty, so I can't have one now if I wanted to…

I wouldn't be so sure they can't operate the can opener tho.. I think they only pretend to be ignorant of such things to keep us in line. 🙂

I love all animals, but I'm a dog person since I'm allergic to cats. We have 3 puppies/dogs: Gabby, who is really a princess & 5 years old, Harley (2), she is the chow/austrailian shepherd mix, and Gizmo(1), who is known as 'crazy baby man'. All of ours are rescues as well, and some day, they will let us sleep in again…but we never have any squirels in the yard.

  • Marianna January 21, 2011 at 7:32 am

I am a cat person, no doubt. Dogs can be cute, but I have never really gotten over my childhood fear of dogs. Stranger dogs keep me the most wary. I had a little dog chase after me and take a slobbery nip at my leg just recently. The dog's owner just stared in shock (lol).

Well, most of my pet stories are kind of sad. I did own a nasty little rabid hamster. He was prone to biting, so after a while we ignored him. Apparently animals need a little attention to survive. Even mean little buggers that like the taste of your fingers.

Another sad but funny tale: My uncle's dog was violently sick and deposited the contents of his upset tummy on my grandparents' living room floor. Even though this mountainous pile was in plain view, my grandmother still stepped in the grey colored mush. I came in the room to find her boot lodged in the center of the partially digested stomach slop. She tells me calmly that the dog had an accident.

Once when I was away for a few days and my family was watching her, she decided to get into the candy bars that I left on the counter. She hopped on the kitchen chair that rolls and pushed it to the counter and grabbed the box down. I was nervouse to see this when I got home but she didn't get sick or anything.

Dog person here! Personally, I am not really an animal lover. But if I have to choose between a dog and a cat, I'd choose dog for sure. One reason is that dogs are loyal, friendly, grateful, forgiving… need I say more? But cats blissfully think that everything in the world is THEIRS, and theirs alone. Seriously. =_=

Total cat person – never wanted anything but to have a cat. After my parents got divorced, my mom finally let me get one and I was so happy. Unfortunately, after 4 years with the cats, I developed severe allergies. Luckily, I left home six months later to go to college, so my mom was able to keep the cats and I just suffered on when I came to visit. Thanks to the allergies, I'm doomed never to have another one, a fact which makes me very sad, especially since hubster is a total cat lover also.

I wasn't a cat or dog person for a long time. My sis moved to another part of town, got a dog, was engaged, and preparing for a wedding. She got married on a cruise boat and set sail to Mexico with a friend watching her house and babysitting her dog and cats. Halfway through her trip, he had a family emergency, and I got an emergency call to go to her house, feed the cats, and bring the dog home. I'd never met the dog (a chihuahua), and I'd never been to the house either, so I was REALLY hoping I had the right address and I wasn't stealing someone else's dog. The dog "showed" me where the cats where, I changed the food, or so I thought–somehow I gave the cats the dog food and grabbed the cat food. The dog sat still all the way back to my house like "yeah, we're in the car. now who are you?" When we got home she checked out hubby and the boys. Later, she wouldn't eat until we broke out the turkey lunch meat, and then she'd only eat from our hands and if we tore it into bite-sized pieces. Later, my sis moved to Germany for a year and we ended up adopting Lola, and now the little dog is my hubby's little buddy. She still has her quirks and love for turkey lunch meat though!

  • Sheree January 23, 2011 at 2:19 am

I had two great dogs while growing up. As they were part of the family (and sometimes ranked higher than mere children), we all learned a lot.

Of course, it turned out that I was allergic to dogs so I haven't had one since the last one died.

Wow! I get busy and look at all the comments! You guys rock!

@Sully – no arguments about pigs, but they don't fit with my decor. ;-D

@LSU – ferrets are adorable, how can you say no? (I can say no only because ferrets would be food and play to the Canine Death Squad AND the Killer Kitties.)

@Geisha'sMom – The Spotted Fiend does that with the hubs, minus the leg humping, though.

@Sharon – I wouldn't trust any of the Canine Death Squad in trials, though Li'l Leader has the best shot at doing well. Big Baby would barrel into the judges just like Drake.

@Debbie – Wolf sounds great, and let's hear it for the cat/dog combo folks!

@Victoria – I have Leo rising, am married to a Leo, got married in Leo, and have a Leo child. Yeah, I'm with you on the Cat.

@Jessica – I feel your pain, especially since I have those extra kittens because the chicklet's become allergic. Stuffed cats are at least a substitute.

@BLH – embrace the cat/dog love! They each have awesome qualities as beloved pets!

@Danielle – bring the cat home, make him love it. LOL

@Amber – love the stalking, babe! And, I think the bringing them home and looking innocent plan could work. Um…we have a spare room for you if it doesn't. ;-D

@Melissa – good point, they're probably faking the can opener stuff because they do like having staff.

  • Gini Koch January 25, 2011 at 4:10 pm

@Valerie – can't help you with the dragon, other than to say stuffed ones usually have to do. (Cleanup on a dragon is massive, anyway. Stuffed is the way to go.)

@Estella – Dementia Kitty gets on the back of the couch and tries to eat my hair. I like your cat's method better.

@Robin – yeah, cats are clean and far more self-sufficient.

@Heatwave – The Spotted Fiend's real name is Harley, too! (Harley Quinn, 'cause she's a Dalamatian…yeah, that's our level of humor.)

@Brandy – Aw, thanks, Cat Momma! The hubs says I am not allowed to follow your cat rescue example, though. 🙁

@Marianna – LOL, and I'm glad I read your comment on an empty stomach!

@Sarah – cats love you unconditionally, too. Okay, that's a lie. You're right, unconditional comes from dogs. Love with rules comes from cats.

@Blodeuedd – LOL! My friends and I use that line all the time! Love it.

@Mel – Dementia Kitty's 17, and I know what you mean. They've been with you so long, you want to keep them forever.

  • Gini Koch January 25, 2011 at 4:17 pm

@Tore – I'm with you. It's nice to have the kittens, they're both lap sitters.

@Sue – yeah, the Canine Death Squad are always up for a good round of toy tossing or walk going.

@Sara – oooh, another cat whisperer! Yeah, it's great when you have that skill in finding cats anywhere.

@Eva – so, you had a royal cat. I'm sure he felt you weren't being properly subservient when he broke your stuff. Or else he felt it wasn't good enough for HIS mantle.

    @Dina – that's a smart dog you have there!

    @Pink – but…but…everything in the world IS the cat's. Isn't it? LOL

@Jen – just like the chicklet. You have my sympathies, hon.

@Darlyn – well, there are plenty of other options out there, including hamsters. Or, just go stuffed and save yourself the food bills!

@Meredith – Aw, Lola sounds like an awesome dog, glad she's got you guys for her humans!

  • Gini Koch January 25, 2011 at 4:20 pm

@Sheree – bummer on the dog allergies; those seem much less common than cat allergies. Have you tried with cats or is it all fur?

@Lisa R – yeah, that's one of the best things about dogs, they think we rock no matter what.

@Through – yeah, dogs are toddlers, cats are teenagers. Bummer on the allergies, though.

    @Le – OMG, pooping rainbows…that phrasing rocks!

    My funny dog story:

  • JoAnna January 25, 2011 at 8:34 pm

I love both cats and dogs but I'm partial to dogs. I lost my dog after 17 wonderful years 4 months ago. And I have to say I didn't know it would be so hard.
As for a funny story, our cat is not a friendly with strangers so he will hide. We had a friend of ours dropping in to take care of him while we were away. He was worried that he didn't see the cat. So he ended up opening up the bedroom doors that had been closed. He rattled the food. Tried the can opener to try to get the cat out of hiding. He eventually gave up. Called us in the panic and we had to tell him not to worry about it that the cat hides for strangers. He didn't think it was too funny.

  • Kelly D January 25, 2011 at 9:59 pm

I love your books. My funny story didn't happen to me, but a friend. He taught his cat to use the toilet. Their bathroom door didn't latch properly and the cat walked in on one of the guys' girlfrields while she was using the toilet. She said the cat just looked at her like "are you done already! I need to go."

  • sharon January 25, 2011 at 10:48 pm

first….LOVE the Alien series. Secondly at my house the humans are greatly out-numbered (alas, not by hunky A-C men)by furry critters. we have 2 guinea pigs, 3 cats, and 3 dogs….all of which were strays that we adopted (well, maybe not the guinea pigs…..those came after the kids saw bedtime stories with Adam Sandler. The kids said that since I had adopted them, they wanted to adopt some animals. I hope no more strays come around soom 🙂

  • CiNdY January 26, 2011 at 2:49 pm

I love animals but I am not an a cat or dog lover. I don't really want any pets at my house because of all the hair and house training. But I do get to love on friends' animals. My 2 daughters are wanting a pet so I am sure I will eventually have a household pet! 😀

Godai, that was the name of my spoilled and silly male cat. He was my last pet. He followed me and my sisters every where. He did not like to be left alone. When I slept, he would directly jump into the bed and tried to get closer. sometimes I just did not realize he was near and hurt him.But he did his revenge by bite my legs.LOL

When he was naughty, my sisters used to put him outside. But he always find a way to get inside the house. Once he was in our attic. we have no idea how come he was there. The funniest thing was when he did not know how to get down. The only thing he could do was meowing desperately. XDD

He still had lots of silly things to tell

How I miss Godai. He was one of my best cat I ever had

I am so sorry. I could not come back to the chat room last tuesday. *sighed*

I'm totally a cat person! I have three lovely cats who love to sleep on my laptop or on the book I'm reading, just to be sure they get my full attention!

I'm totally a cat person. My kitty is my favorite thing in the world. And that makes the husband's dog sooo jealous! hehe

I love cats because they're very independant creatures, but at the same time, so lovable!

My funniest memory of my dogis from when she was about a year old.
We were in the sitting room when a spider scuttled across the floor.
I screamed and jumped on the sofa, my mam went to look for something to get it outside with and Nicky (our dog) decided to see what all the fuss was about.
She walked up to the spider (which had frozen in the middle of the floor) and sniffed it then decided to lick it.
As soon as her tongue touched the spider she jumped back and ran and hid.
After that whenever there was a spider she would be the first one to run away or jump on the sofa.

@envyious – Hey you! It's fun being totally outnumbered by the furred beasts, isn't it?

@Becky – wow, you and Envyious have singing dogs. I say you get 'em together and start a dog group!

@JoAnna – I know, it's so hard to lose your pets. I still miss The Big Fella and we lost him over a year ago. {HUGS} And LOL about your cat making your friend work for it. ;-D

@Kelly – thanks! And, I've yet to teach a cat to do anything they didn't want to do.

@Sharon – thanks! And, yeah, we're very outnumbered, too, but you're winning. 😀

@CiNdY – pets are awesome, but your life is never your own again once you get one.

@Aleetha – Godai sounds like he was an awesome cat. And, no worries, we'll be doing chatting again, and soon!

@Reading – my cats like to both step on the keyboards and completely block the monitors.

@Julie – Mr. Fluffykins disdains the hubs, 'cause he knows the hubs is jealous of our love. And he completely ignores The Spotted Fiend, who is the hubs' favorite.

@Sweet – so with you on the cat love and why!

@Natalie – ROFL. That'll teach her. Spiders do not feel good on the tongue!

My recent pet story: It is two days before Christmas. I am in town visiting the family (not staying there because at the time my parents' house has: My parents, my sister, her 2 kids, my oldest nephew, 2 cats and 1 dog. I am allergic to cats, and didn't feel like sleeping on the floor) for the holidays, and my sister receives a phone call from my cousin's oldest girl. "Do you want a free dog that originally cost $900? The others aren't helping care for the puppies so they have to go. They are somewhere between 6-9 months, don't bark, we have one female and one male." My sister gets all excited and asks my mom if she can have a puppy – it's housebroken, doesn't bark, blah, blah. My mother, not wanting to be the bad guy, tells my sister to call my dad, assuming he will say an emphatic "NO!" My sister calls my dad, wheedles some, and comes back to the kitchen jumping for joy. My mom got screwed – my father said yes to the puppy.

And to top that, only about 4 months, not quite as housebroken as advertised, and when puppy wants to play – puppy barks.

So, when I left town, the parents house had: My parents, my sister, her two kids, the oldest nephew, the youngest nephew, his girlfriend, their 9 month old baby, 2 cats and 2 dogs.

@marlene – wow, we both have 7 animals, you just skew even more feline than I do! LOL

@Belle – where are these calm cats of which you speak? Mine are rarely calm…LOL

@Diana – I'll give you cunning – mine are really clear on how to score extra treats just for being there and looking cute. Dogs beg, cats expect.

@Amber – the Killer Kitties and Canine Death Squad would welcome you with purrs and slobber!

@Kris – ROFL! And look at you, leaving without the other puppy? That's some self-restraint and wise moves there!

I can't really say I remember a particular funny pet story but living with a very curious and trouble making bunny she brings the laughs daily. So no cats/dogs for me but funny bunnies all the way!!!

Cat person since I like their independence and I do not have to take them for a walk. My cats are more adverse to exercise than I am.

@Rose – you really can't go wrong with dogs, at least per the Canine Death Squad.

@jms – love bunnies! Had a Benjamin Bunny when I was little. Cats and bunnies don't mix all that well, though, so one bun was it for us.

@Lindseye – I'm with you on the exercise, all the way!
