The Authors Strike Back (Part 3) with Jory Strong

Filed in Blogoversary , Giveaways , Interview , Jory Strong , The Book Lovers , The Geeky Lover Posted on January 24, 2011 @ 12:00 pm 38 comments
Today Jory Strong took her chance to grill us about our preferences in setting heroes and heroines. Again not an easy topic but we were strong and didn’t even start a cat fight over the guys. That’s impossible self-control in action you see here. Be sure to tell us what you would have answered.

Jory Strong: If you could step into any one book and live the story, which would it be and why?
Larissa – The Crazy Lover: argh! hmmm I think I’d like to live in Panem! Just kidding, argh I have to pass on this one =/
Caroline – The HEA Lover: Probably a romance with a HEA *g* I’d choose a story without too much drama. All I Ever Wanted by Kristan Higgins would be nice *g*

Melissa – The Spellbound Lover: Good question. I’d have to say the Harry Potter series. Who wouldn’t want to be surrounded by magic and messenger owls and all sorts. It would be awesome!
Jackie – The Quirky Lover:  Seriously?! *whispers Pride and Prejudice*. Don’t let anyone know I’m a big mush, k?
Lea – The Danger Lover: I can’t possible answer this question in 140 characters. lol Um, Explosive by Beth Kery.
Susi – The Geeky Lover: Gawd that question is evil: any Star Wars book? One with Obi Wan in it? *stop thinking about Ewan Susi*
Bea – The Charmed Lover: Hmmm, there’s more than 1 I’d like to live in but right now, “A Dance Through Time” by Lynn Kurland
Amanda – The Winged Lover: Wow thats hard, Harry Potter or The Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb.
Stella – The Latin Lover:  the romantic in me would love to live in Pride and Prejudice, but for the adventure I’d also like to experience a bit living in the Griffindor dorm in Harry Potter. 😀
Veronica – The Sexy Lover:  I guess would have to go with Harry Potter.
JoJo – The Cornered Lover:  Lover Avenged By: J.R. Ward. Simple…..Rehvenge Yummmmmmmmm
Has – The Smutty Lover: I think the first time I actually felt that was for the Song of Lioness series by Tamora Pierce so I will go with that. The land of Tortall and its neighbours sounded so magical – I wanted to get sucked in there!
Jory Strong: What makes you fall in love with a hero?
Larissa – The Crazy Lover: when he is able to balance his Alpha maleness (is that a word? LOL) and his sweetness.
Caroline – The HEA Lover: I love ruthless heroes who are strong and Alpha on the outside and lovable on the inside. lol I melt when they reveal they have a weakness.
Melissa – The Spellbound Lover: I agree with Larissa and Caroline. I’m also a sucker for bad boys like Patch from Hush, Hush. The bad boy trying to be good!
Jackie – The Quirky Lover:  Strong, funny and definitely an inherently good boy with some bad boy traits.
Lea – The Danger Lover: Whether he is a good boy or bad boy I’ve got to feel like I, along with the heroine could love him. I have to admit to a soft spot for alpha dominants.
Susi – The Geeky Lover: He must be strong, compassionate, funny, witty, sexy and be a kind of a good bad boy. Yes I have standards!
Bea – The Charmed Lover: *steals Susi’s guy* What? he’s perfect 😛 😀
Amanda – The Winged Lover: A good guy with a bad guy staus who knows how to treat a woman properly and have a sense of humor. He must also be protective but not overbearing.
Stella – The Latin Lover:  If Susi and Bea are done with him, I want him! 😀 lol He has to be strong, courageous, passionate about his beliefs, have a good warm, generous heart and of course make me melt with his intense look! Oh and I love them possessive with slight jealousy streaks ;-p
Veronica – The Sexy Lover:  I am going to with Caroline’s choice too. *grin*
JoJo – The Cornered Lover:  Tough, rough around the edges guy with a secret sweet side
Has – The Smutty Lover: For me how he is with the people he loves, especially the woman he loves. Doesn’t matter if he is Alpha, Beta or Gamma or anything in between, I think how they show or portray their love to their heroine is key! :D.
Jory Strong: What’s the single most important attribute a heroine must have to make you want to spend your reading time with her?
Larissa – The Crazy Lover: she needs to be open minded about the world and people around her.
Caroline – The HEA Lover: She has to have at least one thing/characteristic I can relate to in some way. And she can’t be a cheater or be too mean…coz I’m SO nice lol
Melissa – The Spellbound Lover: She’s got to have a backbone!! Like Rose from the Vampire Academy series. And it’s always a thumbs up if they have a good sense of humour!
Jackie – The Quirky Lover:  Independence, maybe? Enough to be to handle tough situations while still needing some help from her fellow characters.
Lea – The Danger Lover: Intelligence, for me, everything else will fall into place.
Susi – The Geeky Lover: A good kind of humor and I’m picky with that. Please no clown- something subtle with the exact amount of sarcasm.
Bea – The Charmed Lover: Relatable, real ,or nothing else matters. She can be non-human as long as I can relate to her.
Amanda – The Winged Lover: she has to be intelligent, i can’t stand heroines that stand there like Dora the Explorer going “can you see the bad guy?” quick point to him!
Stella – The Latin Lover:  Independence: she has to be able to be willing to deal with matters herself but accept some help and to be rescued at times.
Veronica – The Sexy Lover:  Have a great sense of humor, have a backbone to stand up to not only her man but the evil guys as well.
JoJo – The Cornered Lover:  Strong personality who can take care of herself.oh and I must add she absolutely DOES NOT whine
Has – The Smutty Lover: Being real, with common sense and humour and relatable, I hate self absorbed heroines who moan about the state of the sex/love life.

Okay, step into a book – Lord of the Rings (lots of sexy guys and elves) or the Dragonrider series by Anne McCaffrey (riding dragons, 'nuff said)
What makes me fall in love with a hero? Intelligence and character, strength balanced by heart and respect. Not just a bad boy, but a bad boy for a reason…
And a heroine must have self-respect and be someone I'd want to sit down to have coffee with.

  • Sarah January 24, 2011 at 1:01 pm

Would love to step into the world of Harry Potter – how cool would it be to do magic!?! 🙂

For the last question, what a heroine must have–I'm with Lea, all the way. "Intelligence… everything else will fall into place." That's exactly how I feel. Good questions today! Thanks for a great column.

  • Blodeuedd January 24, 2011 at 1:54 pm

Live in any book..hm, I would love to say fantasy, but there are always evil gods and invading armies. And I am way too chicken for that.

I guess I will go with Pride and P, because his house is HOT

If you could step into any one book and live the story, which would it be and why? That is a hard one because I love so many but um I would say A Touch of Greek by Tina Folsom- I love Greed Gods :).

What makes you fall in love with a hero? I love when they are tough and no matter how hard they try and push the Heroine away, the closer they get to them especially when they are in trouble, also if they have that sarcastic humor – that gets me everytime.

What's the single most important attribute a heroine must have to make you want to spend your reading time with her? normalcy if that makes sense – if they are women I can relate to -not the beauty bombshell ,toughness but a sensitive side as well.

Harry Potter? Meh. Too much creepy racism. I'd totally enjoy living in Adam Troy Castro's Andrea Cort novels (if I'm feeling scifi), otherwise I'd want to live in the Discworld…..an entire universe with an appreciation for the absurd. Sounds perfect.

I fall in love with heroes simply because they are heroes! I mean really, do there need to be more requirements 🙂

Fine… handsome, loyal, trustworthy, protective, sense of humor, snarky etc

What makes you fall in love with a hero? Everything makes me fall for them. They are sexy, compassionate, fierce, witty, charming…I could go on forever. I just love my heroes.

Wouldn't mind spending time as Eve Dallas. She is smart, strong and has Roarke as a partner.

  • Estella January 24, 2011 at 3:33 pm

    I'm with you Cathy!

Who wouldn't want to be Eve Dallas. Roarke is just yummy!

  • les121 January 24, 2011 at 3:58 pm

I think the most important quality in a heroine is perseverance. I HATE whiny heroines that complain all the time. She doesn't have to be uber-tough or anything, but it's so annoying when heroines go on and on about their problems. It makes me want to yell, "Stop whining and actually do something about it!"

  • Jory Strong January 24, 2011 at 6:23 pm

I'm loving the answers, from the booklovers and in the comments. I hadn't thought about Eve Dallas when I posed the question (I was thinking Archangel's Kiss), but being Eve and living the "In Death" stories would be great, and Roarke is actually the icing on the cake when it comes to her life.

  • Bea January 24, 2011 at 6:44 pm

Oh, Eve and Roarke! IS it too late to change my answer, LOL?

  • Stephanie January 24, 2011 at 7:49 pm

Harry Potter definitely. I love the Harry Potter world at Islands of Adventure and would love to explore more.

I have to agree with Caroline too! I love a hero that's hard on the outside and smushy (is that a word) on the inside.

  • Lynossa (Deranged Book Lovers) January 24, 2011 at 10:25 pm

Step into the world? Hm, probably Harry Potter or LoTR or even Bartimaeus Trilogy just so I get the chance to meet him.

I think independence, strong yet humble. Nothing appalled me more than a damsel in distress heroine that think too highly of herself.

  • Pamk January 24, 2011 at 10:45 pm

book I'd love to be sucked into is Judy Mays Alien series.
my hero has to be intellegent, loving, and most of not be an ahole alpha. Certainly don't mind him to be an alpha but not a controlling alpha
one word that my heroine has to have is gumption.

  • lisagk January 24, 2011 at 10:57 pm

I especially love a hero, if he knows he loves the heroine right away and he doesn't fight it.

  • donnas January 24, 2011 at 11:16 pm

I would totally want to step into the In Death series.

And a heroine would need to be strong, able to take care of herself, but knows when to accept help and lean on others.

  • Lillie (AliseOnLife) January 25, 2011 at 12:37 am

I would love to be able to jump into Persuasion.

As for the type of hero that I like, a mix of Curran, Barrons and Lord Maccon!

  • winnie January 25, 2011 at 3:39 am

One thing that makes me fall in love with a hero is when he knows how to show his love for the heroine, such as eventually sharing all aspects of himself to build trust and intimacy in their relationship.

    chibipooh(at)gmail(dot)com

  • Sheree January 25, 2011 at 3:42 am

I would love to be in P. G. Wodehouse's Edwardian England with Bertie Wooster and his valet Jeeves. Or perhaps visit the Empress of Blandings (another Wodehouse series). Comedy without any meanness.

  • Kaetrin January 25, 2011 at 4:06 am

I think one of the most attractive things about a hero (and a sure way into my heart) is the way he loves the heroine. When he's passionate and caring and will do anything while still being strong and manly = le sigh.

  • Mhari January 25, 2011 at 4:58 am

definately allie beckstroms world, never a dull moment, action, mystery, hot hero, tough (on the outside) heroine

  • Kulsuma January 25, 2011 at 11:16 am

I would live in the wizarding world of Harry Potter or in Willy Wonka's chocolate factory!

I don't know what makes me fall in love with a hero because there might be one flaw of theirs that puts me off- but courage, cleverness, humourous and (some) sensitivity are on the list!

A heroine must be able to think for herself and focus on other things other than just guys to hold my attention. Bigger picture.

  • Mikki-Manó January 25, 2011 at 11:53 am

What makes me fall in love with a hero? It's passion, I think. Nowadays I can't imagine that there is a lot of passionate men, so the more passionate is a hero, the more I like him =)
Thanks for the post, I liked it =)

Harry Potter is totally a world that I would love to live in. And a school that I wish I can attend!

    darlyn225 at gmail dot com

  • Celine January 25, 2011 at 1:10 pm

The heroine definitely should be intelligent and self sufficient. I can't stand it when she can't even take care of herself and hides behind her hero the second a bad guy shows up.

I agree with the Harry Potter fans over here. It would be so awesome to attend Hogwards and be able to cast spells!

I would want to step into the Psy/Changeling world created by Nalini Singh because it would be amazing to see shifters in real life and to experience San Francisco in a different world.

The heroine has to be kickass and brave.

  • Mel January 26, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Ooo, I would love to step into Narnia with talkimg animals, dwarfs, fawns and evil witches – the first fantasy world I ever read about!

For Jory's last question, I like heroines who are strong and can take care of themselves, where they can have their happy ending without dependency or her thoughts of low self esteem keep getting in the way.

  • JenM January 29, 2011 at 12:52 am

I'd love to step into Bella's life in Lover Awakened – to have Z as my one and only – yum. Plus, she doesn't have to run around being a kickass heroine herself – she just gets to stay at the compound.

I'd love to be in any of JD Robbs In Death books. Why? Roarke, the gadgets, Roarke, who wouldn't want to be Eve?

  • JoAnna February 3, 2011 at 9:37 pm

For a heroine, she must have common sense. She doesn't have to be a genius but knows how to use the brain she's been given. Definitely not a whiny heroine.

  • mbreakfield February 3, 2011 at 11:23 pm

I would step into Pride and Prejudice, because I love Mr. Darcy.

I'd love to live in Uglies world. I know it's creepy world. But I think I'd love to have my own experience there. Hogwarts would be also great place.

a heroine for me must be a tough and smart one.
