Explore This! Budapest, Hungary

Today, I have to give a big thanks to Stella for recommending Budapest, Hungary as an awesome city to feature. Not only is it Stella’s home town but also the setting for novels by Gena Showalter, and has been featured by Kristan Higgins and Gabi Stevens. I am ashamed to admit that I really had no idea about Budapest, its history or its beauty.

Researching, I’ve discovered that the “first settlement on the territory of Budapest was built by Celts…before 1 AD”. This would mean there could be a very slim chance I’m related to Stella, though no doubt many people have moved around since then, lol.  Regardless, here are some lovely images of a city that is obviously rich in history and culture:

Heroes Square (how I do love the night shots 🙂

Vörösmarty tér “a cute little square in downtown” (says Stella)

Budapesti Operaház – The Opera House

Looking towards Gellért hegy

The House of Parlament
Andrássy út, according to Stella, this is their version of the Champs Élysées.
I thought this was a romantic, Ansel Adams-y type photo

Széchényi fürdő – “one of the most beautiful baths of Budapest”

The aerial view of the same bath shows the extent of this spectacular place.
Vajdahunyad vár – “a gothic castle in the middle of the city”…I’m feeling
green with envy for the lack of castles in my own home town 🙂

This is a view of the city looking down from Gellért hegy

The statue found in Vörösmarty tér. I would love to discover the story behind this…

A partial view of the Citadella found on Gellért hegy.

Can I just say…it is awesome having an “in” on one of our tour cities, our own virtual tour guide, if you will. Thanks, again, to Stella for the inspiration and the tips on the best sightseeing stops!

For more information, click here to check out the  Wiki  article about this city that is “Cited as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe“. I would have to agree, it’s is very stunning and has been added to my visit list for sure!

Oh so sorry, I'm like the worst hostess arriving as last to the party.

Thank you Jackie for the beautiful post, I'm glad you all like my hometown, and I agree it is beautiful!

I LOVE the gothic photo you found of Andrássy Avenue, feels like The White Woman could stroll by any time ;-p

Oh yes, and I haven't told you that the Vajdahunyad vár is located in the heart of a huge park (the Central Park of Budapest), more precisely on the bank of a lake, which in winter becomes the ice rink! My favourite memories from high school were ice skating with friends at night, watching the snowflakes fall and the castle be illuminated by the moonlighted, was SO beautiful! *sighs*

Jackie: the statue on Vörösmarty tér is the statue of Mihály Vörösmarty, one of the most famous and beloved Hungarian poets. His poems are beautiful! The story behind the composition is that each "class" or profession of society is represented. (It is from white marble from Carrara, there are 21 smaller statues, and they are 275 cm tall.)

And yes, though I lived in a couple of cities and countries, I love living in Budapest. It is beautiful, historical, ancient yet at the same time buzzing and full of life! 🙂

Thank you again Jackie for showing BLI a glimpse of my city and I am gléad you all liked it 🙂 *hugs*

I was told that Budapest is really two cities: Buda and Pest. Since you live there is this true and what separates them?
You're posted photos are just beautiful. The citadel is incredible. Thanks so much.

@Victoria: It is true, that Buda and Pest are separate parts of the town (but they are not separate cities). Historically speaking Budapest became the unified capital of Hungary from Óbuda (the old capital which bears Roman ruins also), Buda and Pest. The Danube lies between Buda and Pest, Buda is the greener and more elegant part of town, while Pest is more the "inner city" or downtown. There are several bridges across the Danube and joining Buda and Pest.
