Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

Welcome to this new’s post which seems to be more eventful than last week, and the authors Forbes list as well as a tale of two covers.
However first up, this is a headsup to anyone who is still using Microsoft Lit or still have books in that format. You’d better find a way to save these books as Microsoft has sadly discontinued this format (don’t y’all love DRM?) – the app will be pulled by the end of this month and any stores still carrying this format will have to stop by the 8th of November so back up and save and if you can find a way to convert them in alternate formats.
The Forbes list of the biggest selling and richest authors lists was released this week. James Patterson hit the top spot for earning over $84 milllion (I hope his co-authors/ghost writers) get paid a decent amount too.
An interesting discovery was made this week via Dear Author highlighted issues about the potential copyright about a cover for the upcoming sequel to Beastly by Alixx Flinn, Bewitching, which looks very very similar to L.K Rigel’s Spiderwork cover. And according to the artist, Nathalie slulsma, felt that this was copied because she was approached by HarperCollins for a commission for Bewitching but was unable to reach an agreement. Looking at the two covers with the poses and the background layout as well as the crows – i do think there was a case. But it seems that the cover will be redone but does raise the issue that cover illustrators don’t have full protection for images they create. For more info check out the blog post at Dear Author.

There also has been some WTFERY this week that made my jaw drop – PublishAmerica (a very iffy publisher according to their authors and others) are offering the shady and dubious service of offering authors who want to submit their manuscripts to J.K Rowling to peruse for the price of $49 and to give back feedback. I haz no words than WTF! They have also offered this service towards the President of the United States for a cheaper price but seriously this is one of the most wacked out things I have heard from a shady publisher. But what was even jaw droppingly stupid about this situation – after J.K Rowling’s lawyers heard about this and sent a cease and desist letter to stop this stalking of her because that it is what it is- the publisher sent them their own C&S letter and I think that sums up the crazy. But if they want to tangle with Rowling and her lawyers – I know where my money is going to be aimed at.

The hunt for the next big YA franchise still abounds in Hollywood! Authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl have already sold the rights for their new series before it is published to the producer of the Twilight movies. Unbreakable the first movie/book in the Legion series will focus on a girl whose mother was part of a secret society to defend the world against a demon. The Beautiful books have also been optioned for the big screen so watch out for those if they do get the greenlight!

Now for this week’s upcoming covers/books!

Lynn Viehl’s 4th Kyndred book has a cover!

As a psychic, Samuel Taske can see the future, but he never predicted that he’d fall for San Francisco paramedic Charlotte Marena, the woman he’s been charged with protecting. GenHance-the biotech company willing to do anything to acquire superhuman DNA-is after them. And when Samuel discovers that his Takyn powers have abandoned him, Charlie and her secret nighttime telepathic ability are their only hope for survival..

This looks cool, Hannah Jaynes’ Under Attack a new Urban Fantasy.

She’s one of the Underworld Detection Agency’s best. But her job is really starting to bite . . .
Sophie Lawson is a human immune to magic, which comes in handy for helping paranormal beings transition into everyday life. But fallen angel Alex Grace and his search for the Vessel of Souls is one curse she never saw coming. Suddenly an unexplainable string of killings and destruction has even San Francisco’s demons fearing for their immortal lives. And Sophie isn’t about to trust Alex’s all-too-vulnerable charm or his secret agenda. Now their hunt is revealing dangerous secrets about Sophie’s past, and a malevolent power hellishly close to turning one irreverent human into the ultimate supernatural weapon. . .

The first book caught my eye and the sequel has a cover and a mini blurb.

Those born into the comarré life produced blood in rich, pure, powerful abundance…

With the Ring of Sorrows still missing, and the covenant between othernaturals and mortals broken, Chrysabelle and Malkolm’s problems are just beginning. Chrysabelle still owes Malkolm for his help, but fulfilling that debt means returning to Corvinestri, the hidden vampire city where neither is welcome.

And finally we have the cover for Raven Cursed the 4th Jane Yellowrock book which is slated for release in January!
So what do you think about shady publisher offering to stalk and annoy authors for feedback?
And what do you think about the copyright issues about illustrations, do you think the law should be strengthened to protect artists?
