Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

Random House has annouced it has a reached an agreement with the Wylie Agency after they had stated they was going to offer their client’s books directly to Amazon. Random House will instead be distributing the books under their own name – whether this agreement has a higher royalty rate remains to be seen but it looks like it is very likely and this might lead to similar deals with other authors and publishers.

Laurell K Hamilton has recently blogged about writing and what it means to her but has commented that…

“Some very successful writers don’t seem to feel that emotional connection to their work, or at least not to the degree I do. I used to envy them until I realized the price of that cool distance. They write like they feel with less depth, less of themselves on the page. It is a safer way to write, less frightening, less hurtful, less pain for the writer, but the writing shows that. I can read most other writers and tell you within a few pages which of them “feels” strongly when they write and which do not. Now, some can fake it better than others, but in the end it is a fake. They don’t believe in their own work, their own world, their own characters. They know that the skin of let’s pretend is there, always, they never let themselves sink past a certain point, or perhaps their world, their muse, their imagination is more shallow than mine.”

I would disagree with this viewpoint as I have read books that have dealt with issues and characters very realistically without the author needing to experience what they had gone through and suffering for their art to illustrate ‘real characters’. This has also led author, Jennifer Armintrout to disagree vehemently with this and has blogged back stating:

“How arrogant does someone have to be to claim that they can tell whether or not an author has “painful depths” from a few pages of fiction? It’s insulting to authors who do have “painful depths” but keep them private or don’t wish to express them in their work.”

Jeaniene Frost has posted the cover and inside step! (MMMMMmm Bones) for This Side of the Grave

Nalini Singh has also posted the cover for the 3rd book in her Angel/vampire series. Archangel’s Consort.

Samsung has unveiled its new ereader which will directly link wirelessly with the WH Smiths ebook store. I am not really feeling it due to the battery time which is less than 24 hours and it looks a bit bulky and the price is around 100 pounds more than the new Kindle. Although anyone interested it can be bought directly from WH Smiths store.
Fans of Lisbeth Salander from Stieg Larsson’s trilogy can look and buy Ikea furniture that she chose in one of the books! Although several pieces of the furniture have been discontinued but they are listed here!

BDB porn tweets

A group of role playing tweeters seem to have gone slightly too far in their tweets about characters engaging in triple XXX activity on the networking site. Sayruri from Damn Hearts believes so too – whether this is sanctioned by JR Ward or not is unsure.

But do you think with the examples in the link its porn and unsuitable for twitter or is it fun and sexy?

    wow, the covers are stunning!

I think they should have chosen another place for those comments – there are many people out there who don't understand or tolerate it…

Ok, I can't deny it any longer. I'm a roleplay geek! I was more upset about them telling what the other character was doing/feeling instead of leaving that up to the other character than about the porn.
But do agree that it should be done on a private forum or something like that.

    And on another subject:
    *Cheers for Jennifer Armintrout*

I'm kind of to the point where I hear anything involving Laurell K. Hamilton and just roll my eyes. She's permanently lost me as a reader so I just try to avoid this kind of self-stroking nonsense now when I come across it. The internet certainly makes that difficult though!

Also, about the pr0ntweets, while I know I personally don't want to read that in my twitter feed, I also understand that I don't have to follow those folks if I don't want to. Seriously people- if someone is doing stuff you don't like online, stop paying attention to them! They do have to watch out though because I'm not sure what the twitter terms of use say about stuff like that.

Wait, Laurell K Hamilton is still writing? And people still read her?

I havent read the BDB series but the roleplaying on twitter was a little too much for me. From the tweets that I read on Sayruri's blog it looked like they got too into it and went too far.

I agree about the BDB tweets it def went too far I think. I think there is another group that roleplays on twitter that is BDB linked but they dont go as far as they have. But I just hope that JR Ward does not sanction this because for me it cheapens the book and does not give a good insight to what the series is about.
And personally tweeting sex scenes like this reminds me of romfail.

I can't really figure out LKH – I use to love her books but I hate the different direction she has taken her books. The problem I have – she seems to look down upon her fellow authors who basically writing better books that she is and it looks like its sour grapes. Personally I think she's insecure and blogs this to make her feel better because her recent stuff no matter how much she tones down the sex will never regain the older magic of her books.
